Dark Souls PC (Buyer Beware)

But let's forget that the 23 minutes version 0.1 still downsampled everything to 1280x720 and cut off half the text :P
Still better than the original!

Your (and Clements) continued work on DSfix, updating it alongside the game was key in making this version a real word of mouth success and shaming From into properly supporting the PC version of Dark Souls 2.

Good stuff.

They should have just approached you and asked your permission to make it an official patch. I feel the major problem here is that many more casual pc gamers would look at something like DSfix and see it as a separate download on some non official website and go "It must not be mandatory" or see it as some weird mod.
This is a valid concern, but the total amount of downloads for DSFix (all versions) is now above 1 million. So I think quite a few people are aware of it!

You will never escape that shame.
I just don't want people to say "look he did all that perfectly in 23 minutes", since it's a gross exaggeration. The current DSFix is the product of quite a bit more work.

And I will always live in shame since I was never able to fix the intermittent sun glare rendering issue. Solaire hates me.

Definitely need to install Dsfix.

I bought it the other day too and ran it from the get go with it, and had zero problem.

I'm even playing with the WiiU pro controller, with the little program and the .dll's to emulate the xbox controller that can be found on GBAtemp and it works flawlessly.

Not sure if you're aware but pretty much every major LPer i know of who plays DS including the legendary ENB have mentioned using your DSfix in their videos to explain why it looks so good. :)

Always bug me that 'shoddy port' equates to more or less the same as the console version, but with some significant fixes like Blighttown, plus the new content, plus a much better price depending on if you got it during a sale.

You have to understand that a good port needs to take advantage of the system the game is being ported to.

Don't get me wrong, it's still fantastic without the fix and I'd have still played it for 100s of hours, however if a game doesn't even let you run it in different resolutions and is locked to 30fps, it's a pretty shoddy port.

This in no way means I'm not thrilled that the online petition worked in the first place, and I'm thankful From listened and did their best.

I remember that I couldn't see the orange messages the first time I used your initial fix, though I could guess when I died moments later after passing one. Still even with your first fix you made the game exponentially more playable.

YOU DA BEST

If cross-gen games like Assassin's Creed 4 and Metal Gear Solid 5 look and perform the same on PS3 as they do on PS4, then the PS4 versions will obviously be shoddy ports. Same as here.

But running roughly the same as the original version is significantly different than running much worse (i.e. the RE4 PC port), right?

I bought Dark Souls PC for super cheap a while ego even though I had already played it on PS3. I figured to myself that the DLC cost pretty much the same as the game new on PC at the time, and that I'd be getting a shinier version. It may be more shiny, but very slightly. The resolution/AA fix helped some, but not enough to make it worth it. The PS3 servers were so much active meanwhile the PC version would randomly minimize and made my computer look like it was in the process of crashing hard for about 10 minutes before it would actually open the majority of times launching it from steam.

It's the equivalent of porting MGS1 to the PS4 whilst locking the framerate to its original framerate, the resolution to its original 320x240, and requiring they buy an adapter to use a PSX pad or else suffer from horrendous, broken DS4 support.

That fix never worked for me, my game always crashed when I used it.

But that fix is pointless for me, my crappy 32inch can't support 1920x108pi so a lower resolution is actually better.

This port is so shit that it actually offends me. Every time I hear about it I have an urge to boycott all From Software games.

No worse than a hit and shit post where the OP obviously did little to no research. The port is bad, they said it'd be bad, the market said it wanted it anyways, FROM did what they said they were going to do, a million or so people bought it, Durante fixed it.

Why would you boycott that? FROM did EXACTLY what they said they were going to do. Their communication was clear and timely. The price on release wasn't exorbitant. Durante and his huge brain did the rest.

So, not sure why you're angry. Everyone wins, particularly if people donated on the download page.

Did you try before or after the official patch? It significantly improved the CPU performance of the game. Before the patch, it was cause for concern but now I'd say it lines up with expectations in that regard.

When did the official patch hit? It was a real CPU hog when I last played it, worse than Planetside 2 even.

DSfix helped a lot, but I still struggled to hit 30fps in a lot of areas on a Phenom II x6.

I had a million issues with this game. GFWL not launching, crashes on startup and all the in game shit. But I finally got it all worked out and with DSFix it runs well. Not great, but playable.

The Witcher 2 runs like unplayable crap on my computer even on lowest settings and there is seemingly no reason whatsoever for it.

Welcome to PC gaming.

I can run it @ 2560x1440 with max AA, 30fps locked, it runs very well.

I had a problem when the game first launched that my GPU would be stuck in low power mode. I wasn't the only one with the issue and when I discovered why it was happening i tried to help some other people with the same issue. But a few DSFix versions later and editing the settings there was all I needed to do to make my GPU actually get used. That is, I got much better performance when downsampling from a crazy resolution with Dsfix than the vanilla game. No real problems after that, although I can't get a rock solid 60fps and my PC really should be able to handle that.

I understand OPs frustration.. my first few hours with the game when it first came out on Steam were horrible. But now it's the best.

Runs good for me on my laptop. My only complaint is the lack of an online community, PC is a complete ghost town compared to PS3 even today. Game deserves better from PC gamers tbh.

I dont know if it is because of the steam sale, but Im seeing quite a lot of summon marks and yesterday I was summoned 3 times to fight the bell gargoyles :p

Mostly GFWL's fault, people are playing but just have a hard time connecting to each other. I've done a ton of PVP on the PC version. It's definitely easier to invade than it is to get summoned for coop, though.

You complain that it runs like crap even on lowest settings on your PC. Unless you mention your specs, I understood your post perfectly.
Context here being, that, there are so many unknown factors when it comes to running PC games. I should be running TW2 on medium with playable framerate when it comes to my specs and can run most games on high settings. But something just doesn't go well with my PC. So you can't always blame the game - see this thread.

I hate typing on my phone.

Are you fucking serious?

It's a shit port with broken matchmaking that is held together with duct tape applied by the PC gaming community, one of the larger contributors of which is actually posting in this very topic.

Wanna know who deserved better? The people who paid for the game in the first place. FromSoft even agrees, which is why they even themselves acknowledged the port was a mess, and promised to do better with Dark Souls 2.

That's fantastic news. I remember waiting out there to get summoned (for early praising of the sun) for 15 minutes without getting summoned. I should get back to my STR/DEX character this weekend then, hopefully have some fun invading people.

And yet its still the best PC game released in the last five years, at least. Durante fixed the game, quit yer bitchin

I'd say performance is easily one of the games worse problems, it's just that so many people have such strong computers that they don't realize it. Dark Souls should be running in the hundreds of fps on strong computers, but the performance just isn't there even disregarding the animation problems. On my older dual core + radeon 5850 computer Dark Souls ran worse than Crysis.

I still have a core 2 duo and some old gtx 460 and like 4 gb of ram. ran perfectly fine for me
