Fighting Games Weekly | July 15-21 | Post-EVO Pillow Talk

Explain the premium ticket thing to me.
Currently the game is monetized via a stamina system. Every time you play a match whether it be through random ranked or player lobby (yes), you have to spend a battle coin. You get a max of 5 battle coins and they regenerate at a rate of one every half hour.

Once you run out of battle coins you can instead choose to use either a premium ticket or premium coin; tickets are given out either through events or by hitting various milestones (like 100 days logged in, etc) while coins are microtransactions for about $1/coin with bulk discounts.

If you win a match that you spent a premium thing to play they refund it back to you. So trying to win as much as possible using your remaining ticket (deliberately) hearkens back to the arcade where you get to keep playing with your last quarter until somebody knocks you out.

Thank you for explaining that.

GET 'EM!!! GET 'EM!!!!!!!!

ChrisG actually wasn't fully sandbagging in this match. That Jill was just blowing up ChrisG, he didn't see it coming at all. Also he Shell Kicked into one too many Mines.

That match got crazy hype though.
He was pulling an FChamp and playing Magneto, though.

I count picking Magneto as sandbagging. Chris's Mags is still not legit. If he'd picked Morrigan/Doom/Vergil all the way he would've taken EVO, IMO.

Magneto is a counterpick, as I understand it. Remember reading that it fares better against certain teams.

ChrisG just doesn't like playing Vergil against Zeros. I mean yea he's not playing at 100% because of the the team but this isn't true sandbagging... sandbagging is not trying at your maximum and ChrisG was definitely trying to win that match.

ChrisG did fine against Chris and Zero... he got blown up by Jill in all 3 matches. That last match was a Jill vs full team comeback.. and it was mostly legit.

I agree. I used to bring this up on SRK back in the day but people would avoid the question like the plague. No one wants to talk about how embarrassingly little these prizes are.

It needs to change for the scene to grow. Sad as it is, more money attracts more attention.

I know it'll never happen but I feel like EVO should be $50 or $100 to enter as opposed to just $10.

Yeah, most times it didn't seem like that Zero was doing jack shit. Chris was doing some work, especially in not completely caving to Soul Fist antics, but not that much. The problem really came up when Jill was unexpectedly making sure that ChrisG was going to get that work.

Mad Beast continues to be one of the worst LVL3s in the game. WindZero could've won earlier in the set if Mad Beast wasn't so god damn shit.. Jill turned it on and Doom just said "nope" and camped at the top corner of the screen until it wore out.

Ok I'll do a little write up with my results and everything about my thoughts at Evo.

Persona 4 Arena: Went 2-2, lost my second match (first loss, but my second match played) against BrkrDave, who, overall, got 4th in the tournament. That's not a bad person to lose to. And then I ended up losing later on in Loser's to a Chie.

SF4: Went 0-2, because I'm ass in that game so whatever, gonna get back into that come 2014 update

Melee: Went 0-2 again because, I haven't played that game in 2 years and trying to play against good Melee players (which is like everyone who entered that tournament, it seems) so if it's back next year, gonna grind for that for sure. Melee was INCREDIBLY hype during pools on Friday/Saturday, without a doubt. On Saturday when everyone was getting super hype for it (even a lot of people sitting down watching Marvel were watching Melee, really), one really obnoxious dude got up and started shouting "FUCK SMASH! FUCK SMASH!" and tried to get a chant going but no one was going for that.

KOF XIII: Went 1-2 cause I had a bye. Meant to get better at this game but never had many chances to play. After that Top 8 though, I'm really going to try and get into it. Ended up forgetting the cord to my stick at first (I have a custom stick so it has a custom connector) so I had to borrow a stick for the first match, ran back up all the way to the Paris to get my cord, come back down, and get bodied. Tokido also had a really fantastic comeback with 1/4-1/2 health Kim against two characters to stay in Winner's, it was super sick. Oh, and Chris G never showed up to KOF, as far as I could see.

SFxT: Went 3-2 (with a bye) so overall, it was sort of my best performance. Lost to a guy who played Christie/Elena third round because I don't know those characters at all (my fault for not playing more), went through Loser's, and had to fight Tokido of all people to try and reach Loser's Finals. Only got Perfected by him twice throughout the set and in one round got his characters down to half health each. Tokido was also really nice, despite being the Murderface. Playing in the tournament also makes me wanna play SFxT more. I forgot how fun that game can be.

Marvel: Went 2-2. Got about 3-4 characters off Chris G throughout our set. There was one game where I probably could've taken the game, but thought "Oh I'll save meter and chip out" but forgot about the stupid DP super and that really fucked me up. One game he infinited my Cap and I just leaned back and was like "Fuck." because he was taking out my best character no issue. And of course Chris was having the Grumbles. First match of Loser's I was down 0-2 to a pretty obnoxious guy (no hand shake, no nothing), come back 3-2 and he storms off super salty, it was great. Ended up losing to a Spencer/Wesker/Hawkeye (something like that?) player.

Met Koogy on Friday, told him he had helped answer some questions for a paper I was doing and he remembered and was really nice-- also liked the Ness shirt I was wearing. And coming down on Friday I was in the elevator with Keits, and he confirmed to me he likes posting on NeoGAF! Talked to Gootecks a bit on Sunday when I grabbed some food during Injustice Top 8, again, he was nice. Sunday night after everything was over, met Jebailey and talked to him for a bit too, easily one of the most genuine guys in the FGC, even if he may not come off as such at times.

Had a TON of fun throughout the whole event, finals day in particular was a blast (except for this group of guys who sat down in front of me-- one even moved a chair in where there wasn't one and blocked my view-- and none of them even gave a fuck about anything that was going on. No clapping, no cheering, nothing. It was really annoying). If I can make it out next year, I will definitely go.

Also, BIG shoutouts to RentalHamster and Shouta. When a few people on GAF said they would stop by my match against Chris I thought "Oh, if it happens, awesome", but didn't exactly expect anyone to stop by, but meeting you two was a real blast!

In a way I thought Evo this year couldn't beat Evo from last year, but I was definitely wrong. One of the best things I've ever done in my life.

That's something that I'll never understand, I mean- nobody is saying you have to do anything when you're a spectator or anything but why go if you're not going to do anything but what you could do at home for free?

They were also mocking Injustice and pretending to fall asleep during it too.

Granted, I'm not a big Injustice fan (I'll watch it but I'm generally not too keen on it), but that's just too much to do at Evo, for real.

It just made no real sense when everyone was getting hype as fuck during Marvel and these guys were mocking it too. Ridiculous.

I genuinely wanted to watch but I kinda really lost track of time after my Divekick pool and before I knew it it was 3 already >.>;

It happens at all spectator events...something you'd just have to get used to lol

WinZero doesn't play a Zero team though, he just plays Zero.

I think $10 is too low for entry fees nowadays, personally.
The problem is that it's $10 per game, so if someone wants to have fun and play in a game they like plus 5-6 games they are only okay at, like Smedwicks did, a price increase ramps up fast.

With that in mind, doing $10 per game, and then a deal where you can pay $50 to get into as many games as you want, might actually generate more revenue.

The only problem would be how to divide the pot if 50 dollars goes to all games if the # of games entered exceed 5 i think. I guess they can use total entrants in each game as a basis for pot amount
