Nintendo Co. (7974) rose to its highest level in almost two years in Tokyo trading on speculation new video game titles are boosting overseas revenue and the shares may join the Nikkei 225 Stock Average.
The world’s largest video-game console maker jumped 4 percent to 14,050 yen, the highest close since July 2011.
Games including “Animal Crossing: New Leaf,” released in the U.S. last month, helped Nintendo’s 3DS handheld player maintain its position as the best-selling game platform in the country, according to market researcher NPD Group Inc. The stock may be included in the Nikkei index following the merger of exchanges in Tokyo and Osaka while a report that a ban on consoles may be lifted in China is also boosting the shares, said Takashi Oba, a senior strategist at Okasan Securities Co.
“The stock is up from mixing all these factors,” said Oba. “The stock is in a upward trend. There may be some investors who are forced to buy back the shares.”
Nintendo is trying to revive sales by adding new titles for the 3DS and Wii U home consoles. The Kyoto, Japan-based company said last week it had sold 225,000 of its 3DS handheld consoles in the U.S., the world’s biggest video-game market.
This month’s merger of the cash-equity trading platforms of Tokyo Stock Exchange and Osaka Securities Exchange saw Nintendo’s primary listing transferred to Tokyo making it eligible for inclusion in the Nikkei.
“The integration fueled speculation that Nintendo will be included,” said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Ace Securities Co. in Tokyo.
Mizuho Financial Group Inc. (8411) last week raised its price target for the console maker to 14,000 yen from 12,000, citing higher 3DS sales. New titles may also increase sales for Nintendo, Mizuho said.
China may end its 13-year ban on the sale of video-game consoles, the South China Morning Post reported July 10.

Well deserved. They have done a fantastic job with the 3DS turnaround and the software output AND quality has been outstanding. Games like Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, and Fire Emblem deserve the awesome sales. Keep it up, big N.

I wish I had a shit ton of money to invest into Nintendo...sure they may be doomed someday, but right now honestly seems like the best time to buy Big N stock, it's only going to go up from here...for awhile at least.

They should cut the 3DS version of SSB (even trough i want the 3DS version) to save their home console. But at least they are doing fine right now. The Status Quo of the big three should remain.

While both the 3DS and Wii U have had their faults at launch, and some fundamental, this is a great thing. Nintendo have a fantastic lineup of games for both consoles this year. Well deserved

The 3Ds is still not Doing too well in the West and the Wii U is obviously doing badly in every market but it's nice to see some positive news for once from investers re: Nintendo.

Animal Crossing has shown that the former argument is now invalid. Plus, with Pokémon soon, it will stay this way. The 3DS is doing well. It may not be doing as well as the DS was, but nothing ever will

I think 3DS is in a really good spot now and will get better.

I'll be getting 2 3DS later with Pokemon X + Y for me and my GF including fire emblem and SMT. Can not wait.

Looking back at Nintendo 1st party output at the end of this year will show an impressive lineup, and that despite H1 Wii U drought.

3DS through the year and Wii U H2 are what makes a company successful, hope 2014 will cary on like that.

Good, hope they keep doing better. Can't wait to see Wii U having the same level of support they give the 3DS, a great game almost every month.

I remember someone around here saying the same thing when he bought the shares right at the peak of Wii sales. I wonder what he thinks of Nintendo now.

Also, when it comes to the markets, it's generally wise to ignore what Bloomberg reporters write because 99% of the time, they have no goddamn clue what they are talking about.

I also came in expecting to see that Nintendo plan to release a Japanese removals firm simulator. Did not come away disappointed however, I own about 10k worth of 7974 and they've not been doing great recently so any upward movement is music to my ears.

"Hiroshi has to move out of his girlfriend's house after she found his hentai collection. HELP HiM PACK HIS STUFF IN SIX BOXES OR LESS!"

Game also includes helpful tips such as how to fold a cardboard box and if you get stuck, the moving company helps you for free!

Edit: Nevermind, was looking at the wrong market. This upward trend is ultimately pretty inconsequential.

One game is helping 3DS sales, stock price is up on hopeful speculation about their future.

One of those isn't good enough and the other is meaningless.

Short-term game company stock price movements don't mean shit, stop acting like they do.

They probably thought why the hell they bought it when it was at its peak.

You actually laugh at some company's misfortune?

If the misfortune is due to its own incompetence? I wouldnt laugh but I would be happy since it takes these companies to suffer huge losses for them to realize their mistakes. Nintendo needs to suffer in order for it to realize that it cant put out a gen old piece of hardware add a gamepad and call it a day.

Exactly. Massive commercial failure is the only thing that might get Nintendo back on track and the WiiU is providing that.

They've done a fantastic job with the 3DS, it's probably my favorite system ever and the system i've spent the most money on, so many great games and more coming.

Hopefully they'll be able to do the same for the WiiU, at this point it's not a very appealing system.
