Kids are gonna have to resort to finding porn mags in forests like the good old days.
Imagine if it came out that Cameron and other leading politicians have opted out of the block. My, the papers would go wild.

So, in other words, they will keep a register on everyone who disables it and investigate them for child pornography possession. This is in response to the crackdown on child pornography.
I for one look forward to the day where parents are completely relieved of their responsibility to parent their children
VPN usage in the UK to skyrocket lol.
It's fucking unbelievable that the UK is about to join the ranks of backward ass 3rd world nations in the Middle East and Asia who heavily censor their internet.
They have an excuse, they're heavily theocratic, dogmatic and Islamist.
Whats yours, you increasingly atheistic nation free of religion?
You can take away many things from a man and he will remain silent, but woe betide you if you separate him from his porn.

Can picture it..This sounds like fun.
"Uhh, yeah, about that filter. I uh.. need porn. Please remove it"
Not embarrassing at all.
Already happened in the states. Replaced by day care centers and the TV, amongst other things.
You are aware that the internet in the UK is already censored right? Has been for quite a while.
Here's what I don't understand, why can't there be more education on how to use parental locks? Have a government scheme or get the ISPs to send over a leaflet in the mail. Net Nanny 101 or something. Remember when all wireless connections used to be open until ISPs started advising people to add a password to it? Something along those lines with parental locking would be ideal. Why does the government feel it is their duty to do parent work?
As a parent, I am very much in favour of this move, particuarly as I feel pornography portrays unrealistic ideals of sex to minds that are still very much impressionable, from both a female and a male perspective. I'm sorry that a few nerds are going to feel uncomfortable calling up and asking for their web filters to be disabled, but this really is for the greater good.
This is all that's needed to be done. Instead all of this is being done for the tabloids and for no ones benefit other than the PM's image.
If you feel too embarrassed / ashamed to do so, then you have a much more deep rooted problem that would probably benefit from a few sessions with a therapist.
Le sigh!
A perfectly reasonable suggestion that has been met with the usual hefty dose of GAF hyperbole and salt.
Firstly, before we all implode with rage, let's remember that it's a filter not a block. If you want to watch porn online, opt in. If you feel too embarrassed / ashamed to do so, then you have a much more deep rooted problem that would probably benefit from a few sessions with a therapist.

Yup. Like I said, hyperbole and salt.

This is about a government taking its first steps towards proper Internet censorship. It's a very slippery slope from here if this passes into law.

Indeed, you just know this isn't the last thing they'll block.
How about taking some responsibility as a parent and install some already available software to police what your children are doing? How about educating your children about the "dangers" of the Internet.
Do your job as a parent and prevent them from accessing that content at an early age, then. It's easy enough to install parental filters.
Yup. Like I said, hyperbole and salt.

kurtrussell isn't going to last long around here
Well, I've been here about two years longer than you have so far.
Well the Guardian article says it's opt-in, so really there is nothing to worry about. Unless you ring up saying I want porn to be blocked, nothing changes.
I don't blindly attack and insult people.
Do your job as a parent
As a parent, I find it ridiculous that you're relying on the government to do your job for you.As a parent, I am very much in favour of this move, particuarly as I feel pornography portrays unrealistic ideals of sex to minds that are still very much impressionable, from both a female and a male perspective. Yup.
...and like that, GAF are experts in parenting. First of all, fuck you guys for trying to tell me how to raise my own kids. You have no clue what I do and don't do, and GAF judging me on my parenting skills is a bit like me trying to tell a pilot how to fly a plane.
I'm guessing you don't have children of your own. When you do, you'll realise that life is not as simple as "take some responsibility and educate your children". It's a fucking minefield out there, and no parent stands behind their children watching their internet usage all the time. For one, it's just not feasible, and also, I like to have some kind of trust in my children and not have to constantly monitor what they do online.
I'm not sure how much you know about local web blocking software, but it can degrade performance and the fact that it embeds itself so deeply into the operating system is a huge issue - apart from the incompatibilities that the software can introduce, there are potentially many little vulnerabilities being introduced that any nasty piece of malware may be able to hook into.. Besides, I am not even sure if there *is* any appropriate blocking software for Fedora.
Nothing is being forced on anyone. There is a filter that can be taken off with a one minute phonecall. It's NOT A BLOCK. One phonecall, and you opt-out and everything is as it was before.
Ultimately, pornography is harmful for children in that it gives girls an unrealistic body image ideal and teaches boys that women are by and large semen-recepticles. Children do not have the life experience to be able to put pornography into context, and anything that can be done to limit their intentional or unintentional access to it is a good thing.
What "job" is that exactly? Newsflash: installing internet filter software is not a parent's "job".
