Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

SMN parties took over my MNK party spots. Bastards. =)

Anyways, Yoshi and crew needs to take a look at the weapon size and scale as compared to the size of the characters wielding them. Some of those look pretty laughable.

Is it Phase 4 yet? My body is so ready. Loved what I played so far.

Speaking of phase 4. How much impact do you think it will have on the release of the retail version when we will have the influx of new players getting online with thousands of players from the open beta? Could that have a similar effect to what people are saying about new players joining legacy servers?

i.e. economy being out of balance because of the previous players?

Man, things really went bananas since they raised the level cap.

Does the game even retain some sort of balance, now?

The new monsters and NMs in Adoulin are brutal. You need these levels of skill to not only do good damage against them but to also stay alive. The system actually offers progression instead of the countless sidegrading of past end game content.

if you buy the package, does your 1 month start right when the retail version comes out (Aug 27)? or the day you first start playing?

So lets say if I enter as a lv50 thm(but also have Lv 50 Arc)
I can only greed arc drops?
Unless I change job mid dungeon?
Edit:Oh I can't change job mid raid? Didn't know that lol

Yeah, I have an issue with this myself.

In FFXI I would often raid using a different class than the gear I was trying to get.

We'll see how it pans out though, I think they should change it so you can need on something if you have a class/job that can equip it as well. But we'll see.

It's kind of a minor thing, I can probably deal with it.

Hell, in most MMOs you can't trade to a different character, so in those games you would have to raid with the class that you wanted gear for.

My video card is on the way and I'm bouncing off the walls.

Keep going back and forth on getting one. There's a Radeon HD 7870 on NewEgg for 169.99, which is a price I could probably afford by the 9th or 10th. Ordering by then doesn't really help me too much though, and I keep trying to rationalize 40FPS as being acceptable.

*Sigh*

I really hate that I'm poor this year. :P

I'm waiting to see if the Radeon 9000 series will be any good. I currently have a 6870, and it runs pretty nice already, so I'm not in a rush.

I'll probably also get a SSD when I decide on a graphics card.

1.0 was shut down in November of last year. Yes, you can delete the client.

And yes, you can uninstall the previous beta client. You're going to be downloading an all-new client for Phase 4 -> Head Start -> Launch.

Aw crap, I was hoping I'd save myself a potentially massive download for Phase 4 (stupid bandwidth caps out at 120GB, which isn't enough). :(

+188 skill, what the fuck?!

They made insane boss fights. The gear is needed, trust me.

You will not steam roll them.

Yeah, I really really hated the babying of armor, and weapons SE kept giving us as rewards. "We can't make Adamant Hauberk too useless. We can't make relic weapons look bad. People will not do those events anymore or something. TH is magical, we can't explain how it works. Ebon panels."

In modern day MMOs that level of efficiency, min/maxing, ect doesn't really bubble up to the surface until the end game where the content supports it. You can play a numbers game on the way to level cap, but its generally a waste of time since its rapidly obsolete.

In other words, you're just pulling things out of thin air -- just making sure :P

Well, it began with people commenting how they hope the game never has DPS meters, I don't think there was any distinction between in built vs 3rd party until you came along.

Everyone is if you look around. Are you trying to prove something here? Singling me out doesn't do much for you. Opinions, I'm allowed to state mine, you're allowed to combat it, I'm allowed to rebut. You seem pretty defensive about my remark on XIV. If you were offended by it, just say so, so I can apologize :|

I actually didn't mind the babying of armor, it made me more comfortable with spending a lot of time on certain pieces of gear.

They started raising the level cap about 6 months after I got my relic weapon, it really changed everything for me. Pretty much lost most of my motivation to play the game.

I realize most/all MMOs do this, I guess they are suppose to be an ever expanding game. It's probably the reason why I have a hard time really getting into any MMOs anymore. I'm afraid this'll happen with XIV, but I had a lot of fun with Beta, so I'll see how things go.

I think I just need to stop focusing on gearing to max, and just have fun with the content. But I'm a numbers guy, I love to min/max.

The first month is always the most fun in MMOs. Everyone is playing and having fun together. Then the free month ends and 50-80% of the players instantly vanish. The ones who remain all rushed to the level cap in 1 week and do nothing but run the same dungeons day after day. The whole world empties out except in cities where people sit and spam the dungeon finder the whole day and pore over the AH for their next gear upgrade.

That's a really dystopian view of MMOs, but it's true for the most part. I'm looking to avoid that this time around. MMOs are not a competition for me.

I've actually never encountered anyone that used crazy abbreviations or slang in XI or XIV.

Barely anyone talked openly in phase 3. Come to think of it, no one really talks in TERA either.

The reason I didn't like it is when they added new stuff, people would go taste it, and realize Fafhogg still needed to be camped, Dynamis still needed to be done, and so on. It locked us in the old stuff because they seemed scared to make better gear. At 99 people still needed Adaman Hauberk, especially with synthesis.

Also there is a update coming to further improve the relics. Did you see the level 99 relic improvements? They seem to keep the relics up to pace as to not piss people off. You can solo farm relics now so it's less of a chore to get them, prices of currency is lower as well.

If voices are confirmed for phase 4, I hope we can get a good hack to either turn them off or switch to another language. :-) Better yet, give us the option to choose in game.

Yeah, but there is a... feeling, when you work two years on a weapon, thinking you are finally done, and then a year later you have to kill Arch Dynalord 250 times to fully upgrade it for lvl.99

Probably my biggest mistake was going for a relic weapon. I have no intention in investing so much time on something like that again. I just can't dedicate the time to it. I would love to, but I have too many interests to focus on one game that much.

I think FFXI was the only MMO I ever play where there was a lot of talking. Which probably had to do with all the downtime. Since FFXI was my first MMO, and then I went on to play stuff like CoH and WoW which were much more faster paced.

Relic weapons was too hardcore for me, if I go back to FFXI I'll solo farm it though now that Dynamis is a free zone to enter and you can enter daily. They should have made it like that in the first place. They must have learned a lot from FFXI, well I hope. If that restriction wasn't placed on you guys, you wouldn't have had to devote so much time to get them. All that gil spent. I wonder if old relic owners got pissed that they are easier to get now. At least they can get multiple relics with their relic (farming with the relic).

In most MMOs, the hardcore features aimed at those players are always harder than they are later in the game's life. As it should be really. Keeps people playing and there is a sense of pride. I was proud to get my black belt before they changed HNLMS to pops making it infinitely easier.

However, hard mode and normal mode options are good too. The rewards should not be close to each other though.

Reading this, really drives home that MMOs take the specialness of your character away as you are just one 'special' person among millions of other 'special' players. It's no wonder people are always clawing to differentiate themselves from others.

I had a couple conversations, but I typically found that I had to be the one to get the ball rolling.

To be fair though, a large chunk of the players were on the PS3, especially in phase 3. Some of these players will buy appropriate keyboards if they decide to stick around for the full game. Those that won't, will never be terribly talkative, since they won't have an appropriate communications device.

Stuff like Vine will help too of course, though I expect those mostly to be used within certain companies and linkshells.

Yes, this is somewhat of a failing of the genre. So much storytelling in videogames revolves around the idea that the story is revolving around special, unique, highly important people. However, because there's fairly limited room to make a highly detailed plot that makes everyone truly special in relation to the primary narrative, they mostly give everyone the exact same storyline, which ironically makes all characters less unique.

For this game, that is fine. At some point however, I'd like somebody to come along and try their hands at more dynamic storytelling within an MMO. There will almost always certainly be points that're always the same for everybody, but I'm also certain the issue can be alleviated somewhat. Granted, that means somebody will have to try implementing procedural storytelling, and that can be really tough.

It's more of a pug thing, not an established group thing. Keeps people in pugs from just needing on everything since there is less incentive to not be a dickbag in random groups with stuff like duty finder and what not. The only thing you should be able to take over other people in a group of random people are things that are directly for the class that you are grouping with them with anyway. In an established group where you don't have to fear ninjas, the people you are grouping with should be going after the common goal of making everyone in the groups characters better, and you will be able to work out who's getting what without rolling.

TL:DR - It's not a problem except for people that planed on trying to need on everything in pugs.

Also, who got those pictures that the link was taken down a page back?

I'm very happy with my GTX 680, for anybody who's looking at videocards. While Squenix has been not fixing their AA, I've been forcing 2x SGSSAA and it actually runs pretty good that way. The advantage of Nvidia over AMD is the flexibility of doing stuff like this because of tools like Nvidia Inspector.

yea I heard force AA is better with nvidia cards.

too bad mine is not powerful enough to do those.

I wonder if phase 4's new maximum setting will add any AA.

I went with the 760 4GB. Get a free game too which is a bonus but the price was right.
