I noticed that sometimes when I'm signing up for certain things it asks the question what race are you?

It will either say

Caucasian (White, non hispanic)
Latino
Black
Asian/Pacific Islander
Other

Cameron Diaz
Freddie Prinze Jr.
Frankie Muniz
Vanna White

They would be considered White Hispanics wouldn't they?

Americans are hilarious with their profiling

It actually more has to do with (sadly) racism. Because people do get treated differently based on how they look. I think it goes beyond what your status is on your ID, it has to do with how you look, and thus are perceived as by others.

What word do you suggest then?

something that doesn't lend itself to thinking people are biologically and intrinsically different, more importantly, something that doesn't directly contradict every high school level bio text book. It's important to point out that early self-proclaimed biologists used the term race to push anti black propaganda, claiming the biological differences between themselves and black people were smaller brain sizes. It was an insult to science and progress. Despicable. Yet the term lives on....

What term to use.... ethnicity, nationality... words that are actually descriptors with which individuals may identify. I'm a TexMexican.

Please tell me you've been to Europe.

Please tell me you aren't European and live in Europe.

You think everyone in Europe looks like one another? Europeans come in all shapes, sizes, facial features and skin tones.

Im born in Europe, i have a european passport, I'm taking a shit right now in Europe. I've been to every western European country, sans uk. And most of Eastern Europe

Thank you very much

Haven't been following this story, have you?
I don't see anyone seriously calling all hispanics white.

You're trying to set up a strawman. What people are actually saying is that hispanics can be white, just like they can be black or mestizo or whatever the fuck we're calling people based on their skin color now.

You know, I was pulled over and given a warning the other day for rollin thru a stop sign. When I read over the citation, it said "W" under race. I'm Asian, so... I dunno. I guess the whole fuckin world is white now

Hey, welcome to the club! We have our meetings every Tuesday night in the Mormon church basement.

This actor could easily play Zimmerman in a movie and his from England. Pretty "White" if you ask me.

And Bardem? In the right light his facial features make him look like a goddam Aztec King

Genetics are some shit.
Hispanics come in all shape and sizes.

Isn't race supposed to be solely about looks ,not biological? That's how it is with many animals, at least those who take part in various competitions. I doubt there's much difference genetically between persian cat and angora, but they're considered different race.

a certain threshold of quantitative phenotype differences. we are way below the threshold. we have certain features that vary, but that's the same for all species.

yea but if zimmerman is white hispanic. then most hispanics are white.

He has European first and last names, no accent and he is light skinned.

Whether he is latino or white, he was "white enough" to benefit from white privilege.

Religion has never prevented any occupying force from mixing with the population and many Greeks look very similar to Turks.

Of course it has. The subset of turks can look similar to greeks have most probably Balkan blood. A lot of them were used as slaves. After ww2 a lot of turks in greece and Greeks in turkey switched countries due to some agreement I can't remember.

Mixing between religious groups wasn't as common as you think. It happened, but not enough to make a big difference in the phenotype of a population. Simply look at a genetic map of Europe and you'll see.

He is not "white" or under what that falls under in the USA. white people in the usa are those of European descent, that's at least what we were led to believe in or know here in Europe. For God knows how long.
So when I saw this guy for the first times I had to laugh like. No not because I am racist but because I have been hearing about this "he is white vs black" for MONTHS. But I ignored videos, than when they made verdict a week or so ago, I checked that video and was in awe. I was wondering if something was wrong with my eyes.
It's just all so weird to be honest. I really don't get usa tbh.

I hate both Hispanic and Latino terms both are equally useless. I've started using Mexican-American its much simpler that way even tho my family has been here before this state was part of the US. My birth certificate has me listed as white same with my sister and parents. Imagine that being "white" with none of the benefits. I've also been tempted to check native american on forms too.

I remember my Government class teacher in high school blowing our minds by telling us that, technically, latinos are white. That was almost 30 years ago. Kaboom.

(EDIT: Actually he might have said "hispanics" or "mexicans" or something...)

all of Europe was invaded by all kinds.
Celts, Goths, Romans, Moors, Greeks, Vandals blablabalala

race is not unique to one country. You got dark Spaniards who have Moorish blood, and you have red head Spaniards who have Celtic blood. Then people move around from city to city blablablala

This was my reaction as well.
