Killer Instinct coming to Xbox One

Man, this game looks incredibly awesome but I have to say with all the new stuff like Counter Breakers, Shadow Counters and some of the new mechanics it's all a bit intimidating since I'm just not very good at fighting games.

I'm looking forward to putting the time in and learning the ins and outs of the new KI, but watching Max's videos (especially the one of high level play vs. Rich) it definitely feels like a tall mountain to climb.

Hopefully matchmaking is done well enough to where it will be accessible and enjoyable for less skillful players like myself. Either way, I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I'd say KI is far easier to pick up than most other fighting games. However, it still has a lot of the stuff that makes it difficult to master or reach a high skill level. I think you'll be fine.

That's what I was hoping. Thanks for the reassurance.

I'll be getting it either way but it's nice to know KI will be a little more accessible than some of the other fighters on the market.

I don't mean to say the game looks horrid. It looks a current gen game. I dunno maybe my expectations were different (for next gen) and that is affecting my opinion but it just didn't impress me as a next gen game.
Yeah, I wish. You can definitely tell that current gen fighters made sacrifices for 60fps.

The irony... lol

This game is running at 60fps with massive shit going on at once. If you aren't attempting to troll then ........ Idk lol

What's ironic?

Anyways anyone disappointed by the graphics is justified. People were expecting a lot more from the first next-gen fighter. Sure it looks better than most current gen fighters on PS360 but it doesn't look in the same league as other next-gen games despite being a fighter, where you don't have to worry about some problems other games face. The only thing it really beats current-gen fighters in is the particle effects and frankly they seem to be overdoing it to composite for their failings in other graphical departments.

This game runs at 60fps and can't afford to drop anything on any stages. There are varying amounts of shit on screen with each stage, and a lot to take in regarding that.

I know its 60 fps but its a fighting game--two characters on a background--a fighter should be in the best position to show off next gen.

Id say SC1 on Dreamcast was even more impressive for its time. And that was a launch title.

Yeah, that game was considered a graphical achievement.

Speaking of, that's a good example. Compare between SC III, a late PS2 game

soulcalibur3ps2_004-large.jpg

with SC IV, an early PS3 game.

We should expect a similar upgrade. The only major upgrade is the jump from 720 to 1080 which while nice just isn't enough.

Saying this looks like "current gen" fighting games is a bit ... weird.
Put Injustice next to it and the difference is pretty stark.

I dont think they want to go for the super realistic style that many people associate with "next gen". The graphics look pretty damn good to me for the style they are going for.

I dont think anyone is saying it looks bad. The particle effects and textures put it above anything current gen. They can stylize the game anyway they want but its like the perfect game to show off new hardware and effects.

The 1st character they show is a stand alone human character (with hair), 2nd a humanoid beast/monster and 3rd an ice/water alien.

I dont want to troll as I do not have any interest in the game other than what it represents as far as next gen visuals but but its not hard to see where hes coming from.

Jago should have the skin and details (like the feathers or cloak) of the Dark Sorcerer,
Sabrewulf should have fur like The Witchers next gen wolf, and
Glacius should be a tech demo on next gen water physics.

Your expectations are ridiculous, mate. So much so that I can't tell if you're actually serious...

You're comparing an actual launch game to two tech demos that were created in a vacuum to showcase the potential of next-gen. If you're expecting that level of excellence at launch, you're in for some serious disappointment.

I've only seen footage of KI online -- by all accounts, it looks better in person -- and it exceeded my expectations by far. Some anti-aliasing would be nice (Sabrewulf's hair!) but the lighting effects, character models and animation are ridiculously good and a definite step-up from this gen's fighters.

And they look great imo, so many details. Glacius is an Alien in a "jelly suit" look at direct capture footage from Max, he looks outstanding graphically. The stages alone are above anything else we have seen so far imo, in terms of fidelity.

I noticed something new with the musical bits during Ultra combos, I don't know if Max mentioned it exactly like this or maybe if I missed it but here goes:

Depending on the stage (and its BGM), each character's Ultra combo will sound different based on the instruments used in the BGM. For example, if Glacius does his Ultra combo in Jago's stage, it'll sound like it was played using guitars. If Sabrewulf does his Ultra combo in Glacius's stage it'll be played using that piano sound. I noticed this when I heard Sabrewulf's Ultra performed in Jago's stage having guitar sounds and then thinking it sounded off when he did his Ultra in his stage. You can notice it in Max's high level play video and comparing it to previous footage out there.

Again sorry if this was mentioned in this much detail before.

I'm gonna wade into the graphics debate and agree that this does NOT look that impressive for a next gen fighter.

Agreed, particles are very good. And yes it runs at 1080p, 60fps. But surely you would expect that in 2013 on a machine far more graphically advanced than PS360.

So far I've seen nothing happening in the backgrounds. They haven't shown any Multi-area stages like the first KI had. Or how Dead or Alive has. I mean like getting knocked off a building and continuing the fight below on the streets.

Speaking of DOA, you can see the characters sweating and getting dirtier as the fights go on, which is a lovely touch.

As you've heard me say before, I'm really not feeling Jago & Glacius character design so showing 2/3 characters that don't gel well with me is also affecting the look of the game for me. I'm going as far as to say that Glacius's design is terrible.

What will be most important is how it plays. We know this. I'm in the UK so I can't see myself getting to play it anytime soon. But I agree with some of the disappointed posters above with regards to the graphics.

Which stages in Killer Instinct had multiple areas? They had stages that zoomed in and out and stage fatalities, there werent multiple areas in a stage.

Anyway those gimmicks get old quick. After the 100th time you see someone get knocked to a different area in Injustice you just want the animation to end so you can keep playing.

You don't notice the stages falling apart as the fight goes on? The physics on the cloth stuff in the background in Jagos stage, the wood? The creepy twitchy arms, the fire, the stool with blood that rattles around in the sabrewulf background? The drone, the parachute, the snow and ice in Glacious stage?

So I think "nothing happens in the background" is not true.

are people saying this game doesnt look good?? lol, really. It looks awesome. There's gonna be some gutted people next gen, It's obvious laready. this game is 60fps and 1080p native right?? lol at people trying to rag on the graphics ofa fighting game. it's about solid framerates not flashy graphics.

So show me a vid of a current gen fighter that graphically looks every bit as good as KI then.

Battle Arena Toshinden did that to me at PS1 launch!

I remember being completely blown away the first time i saw that game, especially Gaia's stage.

Yes but aren't we supposed to expect 60fps and 1080p native on the successor to the 360? We've had 60fps fighters for years, running near to 720p or less. Play DOA 5, VF 5 FS or TTT 2. The Japanese 2D arcade fighters are also 60fps. Even Super SF 4 3D Edition on the 3DS runs at 60fps single player with 3D turned off.

So far, character design ain't saying much. And the backgrounds we've seen aren't the most memorable. They're pretty dark, probably so you can see the areas get lit up by the sparks and particles.

So yeah, the graphics seriously aren't impressing me yet.

The stages are dark because its Killer Instinct, not SFxT.

Indeed. There is more going on in the background than in most fighters, that's for sure. I love Jago's stage falling apart, the machine exploding in Sabrewulf's stage and the spaceship taking off in Glacius' stage.

Nothing happening? Crazy talk.

I will give my opinion over the graphics.

The game didn't look impressive for next-gen... they used some kind graphics similar to SFIV graphics with better particle effects but that's it... the game is just fine in graphical terms.

Now the gameplay seems really cool and fast... give me good memories from the first KI... that's the part that impressed me, they are holding the old KI feeling and I like it.

This game can be the right choice for the first fighting buy on Xbone (most consoles users buys at least one fighting, racing and sport game when buy the console).

Looking forward.

Having a commentator over the game's commentator doesn't work at all.

Love the high level play video, Max. However, whoever was commentating totally killed the mood.

dat first match

Man, I just don't get this. Watching the 60fps high def footage looks pretty damn awesome to me and it probably looks better without video compression. Though I wouldn't say it's the most amazing looking next gen game, I can't think of a current gen fighting game that looks nearly as good.
Mortal Kombat and SF4 on PC compare.

KI looks no better than those games.

What current gen fighters does it not look better than?

Pretty sure Sp00ky was commentating. He obviously didn't know much about the game, especially when he says the players dropped the combo when in reality they misjudged their counter breaker baits.

Dead or Alive 5. It doesn't run at 1080p but it has dynamic backgrounds, characters sweat, get wet, get dirty, breathe heavier. Interact with the weather. Huge amount of poly's per character. All at silky smooth 60fps.

As I said, hit up the DOA 5 Ultimate website to see how they're doing a Free 2 Play fighter.

I am sorry, but no. Search for similar screenshots.

Its funny seeing people talk about the graphics being average because i have always thought that this is one of the better looking next gen games shown so far, the partical effects alone would bring 360/PS3 to their knees, nevermind 80,000+ polygon characters at 60fps.

I don't see it (even ignoring the difference in resolution).
