Giant Bomb Thread #5 - We love you, Ryan Davis

I was shouting and sobbing at the screen instead of Brad, so I guess it went as expected.

Good job calling out Jeff when he went overboard with the disses, though. :D

When he let Vinny head out for the first time without any items I was actually clenching my fists.

edit: That said, I liked the QL (Dota 2!), looking forward to see Vinny and Drew join the daily dota lineup

Yeah exactly. If Vinny was playing alone, or just with Jeff I bet he would have read the quests, or Jeff would have points it out like he usually does. But instead brad is distracting him and Jeff talking about random stuff that's not important right now.

Just his tone about the facebook like buttons and the google sign in. It made it sound like he has no control over the site anymore or the CBSi people have started to make his role smaller in the site.

I think you're looking too much into it. Regardless he said he was fine with just Facebook/Google+ integration right before that, it's a convenience after all.

You are reading something into his statements that aren't there. The "people" he was talking about are the engineers. They have to implement all this stuff.

But wouldn't Jeff have oversight if it was still his site to lead?

Maybe after Ryan's passing he is looking for an exit from the company?

He is editorial, always has been. I imagine he has some design input but most of the site admin is probably handled the same way adverts on the site are handled - to paraphrase Jeff - he has nothing to do with putting ads on the site but if there is anything too offensive he can veto them or have them removed.

As to him looking for an exit? So dramatic. If he wants out all he has to do is give notice. He is an employee, not an indentured servant.

It doesn't happen often, but anytime Vinny starts talking about Lord of the Rings, I lose it. I don't know why, but I always do.

I'm willing to bet that if he found these things to egregious and terrible, he could fight them. But if they're fairly minor, it's better to just let CBSi mandate them and save your political capital for something you actually care about.

Basically, he still likely has a strong voice, but he's never been the sole arbiter of what's on the site since the acquisition.

I thought he was just pointing out a funny/ironic anecdote based on what they were just talking about. Not that google+ integration is now being forced onto Giantbomb taking away their freedom and independence.

giantbomb had facebook login before CBS if I remember correctly. Jeff talked about people responding poorly to the facebook stuff at the time in a jar video too, didn't get the sense that he opposed that stuff. 'more user options' basically.

Yeah. Dave did a big post about it too, I think. I remember him effectively saying it's something that had to be done, nobody is particularly thrilled about it, but people should also not be so up in arms about it.

I think you're reading far too much into it. He's never really given the impression that he can, or wants to, dictate the exact design of the site. That's currently Alexis' area. Jeff seems more like he makes suggestions, and it's up to the engineers/designers to decide if they're feasible and then to implement them.

Yeah, site side Jeff seems more like the guy in the engineers meeting who is like "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could do X?"

Our own Eznark posted on that video:

@RsistncE: Thankfully the core DoTA player have migrated to Heroes of Newerth. The League of Legends community is, so far, pretty positive. I think the communities right now suit the games. HoN is bad-ass and in-depth and unforgiving. It's for serious players who want to invest a ton into the game. LoL is more of a laid back, jump in and play experience, and the community seems to reflect that. We'll see how that goes once the pre-season starts and stats count for real.

Found it kind of funny. Didn't know he was a HoN guy. He even has the same avatar (Brewers). Its funny when you run across people you know on different sites.

iRacing QL in the works!

Thank you based Drew!

Oh man is that QL going to be live? I'm sitting here behind my racing wheel ready to launch Euro Truck Simulator 2 but if this is live, those Europeans can wait for their deliveries.
