NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

~4 hours in SAI, most of which was spent changing colors around. At one point I realized the proportions were off-balance, so I had to do some squishing, which is very tedious in SAI as opposed to Photoshop. I'll probably touch it up some more later, but I think I'm 95% satisfied with her character design now. I just need to refine my style from this point because I feel like it isn't sharp enough.

What age does she look to you guys?

My favorites from the last page. Keep it up you guys!

Feran - Very professional. Your painting skills are impressive.

pickle - I think this is your best one. Great color and the pattern is very distinctive and ancient feeling. Feels like the bottom half is a reflection and the middle is a door to a chamber or tomb.

ExMachina - Again, you have that classic style that'd look nice in animation.

AFollowerNotALeader - Love the colors and highlights

zoukka - Incredibly accurate and clean

jujubeads - You have a good eye for drawing clothing wrinkles and an interesting, minimalistic look that makes even outlines look good.

Thanks ABXY. Funny that I also particularly liked your other choices as well. Jujubeads I really like your art style. There is a guy on here named chumps who has a similar minimalist style and I loved his work. Haven't seen him post in a while. :(

If anyone wants inspiration on a comic drawing idea, I was thinking something that would be kind of funny (to me) is if you had a panel of someone saying xbox on, the next panel would be the NSA/goverment (would almost have to be like a call center environment) clicking a button to turn on xbone one #2348239 on or something... And when they see through the kinect, it's a most wanted person or something. Next panel: We got him. lol.. dumb idea but if anyone wants to, feel free!

Updated Chia above. Tweaked around shadows and hues a little among other things. I feel like I should reshape her left foot but I'll wait and approach it with fresh eyes later.

This would actually be really amusing if done right. Should post it as a contest in a new thread.

Day 33, ~1h45m.

What age does she look to you guys?
I'd say 14-ish, though with manga style drawings it's always difficult for me to pinpoint ages.

Also, thanks for the kind words ABXY and pickle. I'm always checking out this thread as well as arts and farts, but I can't recall coming across Chumps' stuff unfortunately. And I'd love to be more comfortable painting like some of these other gaffers, but it's kind of intimidating.

Ya I did a lot of squash and stretch to try and get her to look younger and shorter. She's supposed to be 155 cm (5'1) and an appropriate age range would be 16-19. The advantage of having a character 18 and up is that the main cast can be older (19-23) or younger (13-16) and it helps to avoid the typical "school setting" often found with younger characters. However, the disadvantage is that they're mostly developed at that point. It'll take a drastic event over time to show meaningful change in their personality or values, which is why it's easier to work with younger characters who are still trying to identify themselves.

Also, I think you'd find success if you got used to painting. You've nailed proportions and shapes in your line work, which I think is the more difficult part. Awesome painting wont normally fix an off-balance sketch, but great lineart can just be shaded over with black and white and still look finished.

I missed two days because of work stuff. I'm on leave from tomorrow so won't be about for a fortnight or so...

Right.

Anyway.

Time: 20 Mins
Medium: GIMP + Wacom
Notes: Quick sketch of a lever-action (very short barreled) carbine. I sucked fairly bad at drawing the big-looped lever on this one, otherwise pretty happy.

Time: 17 mins
Medium: GIMP + Wacom
Notes: Quick sketch of an old-fashioned portable computer.

Time: 11 mins
Medium: GIMP + Wacom
Notes: Quick sketch messing about with looking *out* through an arbitrarily shaped hole (in this case an arrow pointing down + left).

Missed a bunch because I've been so busy with family stuff... Finally have time to myself so I'll try to catch up later on today.

Oh well, here's Day 8! Still no tablet or Photoshop, so it's a pencil sketch with some lazy flats thrown in via GIMP.

I'm quite fond of your style. It reminds me of some of the older, traditional films to come out of Japan and Disney.
Thanks for the kind words. ^^ I've wrestled with my style for a long time, so I really appreciate it.

Spent about an hour on and off doodling and getting inspired by character design tumblrs. Redid Luca's armor a bit.

Still gotta work out some kinks like the water gym leader shoulders.

I'll post my two, as I skipped a few days since my tablet was not charged.
The charger has been lost. :/

So, I did these today at like, 1 A.M. :)

I really had a blast making these, but I think there could be some improvements.
Any comments are welcome!

Hey guys been a lurker of Neogaf and have been watching this thread for a while.

I've wanted to join in on the fun. Any critiques are welcome and appreciated :D

Day 1
~45 mins
2B Pencil

Edit: how do you resize quoted pics?

Hey all,

Brand new beginner here. I've been on a drawing kick lately and am starting Loomis's Fun with a Pencil and Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing. For any of you who are knowledgeable about both, do you think these two books complement each other? I have Betty Edwards Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and while I enjoy it, carrying around the view finder is a major pain in the butt.

I've been looking at Nicolaide's The Natural Way to Draw, but the book seems like too much for me now. I'm married with children and a full-time job. I'm just looking to get better and enjoy my hobby with what little time I have in the day.

I'll probably post my progress in this thread if that's cool, or start a new one if it's not. Scanning everything on a daily basis might get old quickly... :/

I was curious if I knew myself well enough to do a self portrait without a mirror… chickened out and just did a cartoon version :P 1.5 hrs

As pathetic as it sounds I've been working on the same piece for almost 1 week, this is the latest version, I think I finally nailed the perspective but if I'm still wrong please let me know.

I'm aware that the planes of the face could be more defined by pushing the values further but I'm afraid of losing the stylization charm (if any).

EDIT: Wow this looks really out of focus on some monitors, I better level up that hardness

Impressive stuff on this page, especially everyone's facial work. Hands used to be difficult but now faces are giving me hell. I've been working on a piece for several days now and will hopefully have better success today.

Just wanted to say, as I'm lurking the thread, how nice it is to see how much talent has found its way in here. You guys are awesome. ^_^

Makes me wish I had kept up posting.

I finally feel like I've made something that is good enough to be in this thread. >.<
So, thanks to AnimeGAF, I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, and LOVED IT.
In fact, I loved it so much I decided to work on a sketch of the EVA-01!

It's been a tough one, but I really like how it's coming along. :)

Thanks! I remember your drawings from earlier in the thread. Do you still practice?

Yeah, I've kept drawing, but I got too lazy to keep posting them here, especially with my vacation in the middle. Maybe I'll put something up soon.

EDIT: Alright, here. I sketched a little Cerebella from Skullgirls. Unfortunately, one of her hands got cut off by... another hand.
