Today would have been Kubrick's 85th birthday.

I don't even know if it's arguable that he's one of the most influential directors that ever lived. His styles show up in all manner of movie that you wouldn't think could hold a Kubrick influence, and yet, there it is, in works by Wes Anderson, and Christopher Nolan, and Gus Van Sant, and Steven Spielberg, and so on and so on.

Started as a teenage photographer, cut his teeth on War and Noir and then ascended to flat-out cinematic genius with 2001.

What's your favorite Kubrick? Is there a single Kubrick that most will agree was his "Best?"

I'm personally gonna be watching The Shining tonight. Either that or The Killing - which I still have on Criterion laserdisc :)

Feel free to post screenshots from your favorite scenes, because - and it's said a lot, but it's especially true with Kubrick - every single frame he shot was a portrait.

edit: Seems only right Hal should get some say in this.

On the occasion of Stanley Kubrick’s 85th birthday, BFI sight and sound magazine writer Nick Wrigley explores the director’s favourite films and viewing habits with the help of Kubrick’s right-hand man, Jan Harlan.

Favorite director ever. Can't say which is my favorite film, although 2001 is definitely a safe choice.

Barry Lyndon is criminally underrated even by Kubrick Fans. It's one of his funniest movies and most poignant in some ways.

I really disagree with the notion that his style has been influential.

He was his own beast...tackling something different each movie.

Barry Lyndon still his best.

I don't even see how this point could be argued. All you have to do is watch A Life In Pictures and see a cavalcade of directors all saying into the camera that Kubrick influenced them.

If what you meant was that nobody since has ever managed to quite reach the high bar he set, maybe...

This is why I hold him so high! What other director has so many different types of movies under his belt. None look a like or have similar stories.

Plus, he was a Bronx boy :)

While we are at it happy 274th birthday George Clinton.

Just watched 2001 the other day. I never tire of that movie. I never have been a big fan of his other work.

Barry Lyndon is definitely one of the prettiest looking films and holds up pretty well. Is a perfect blend of Kubrick's artistry with flawless technical/artistic aspects. Cinematography, art direction and costumes are still among the best done in film, imo.

Quick, someone post a 10 min gif of the light tunnel at the end of 2001... or not.

Jokes aside, Kubrick really does deserve all the praise.... well, except for allowing Eyes Wide Shut to have the soundtrack it did.

Didn't he develop some special camera just for this movie that allowed him to shoot entirely with natural lighting, or something?

And he didn't develop them, they were originally created for satellite/space photography. He knew they were the only way he would be able to shoot using only candle light.

Sorry If I made it seem like I implied he developed them. That's not what I meant.
