Phil Fish has Twitter tantrum, cancels Fez 2 and goes home with his ball

Here is my only question: If he truly is leaving the video game industry then were could he possibly go? With his skill set I fail to see him going anywhere else and being less stressed than as an independent video game developer. Maybe he will just become a small scale app developer.

You realize software engineering and general design skills are incredibly highly valued in the industry at large? Game programming can be applied and considered "qualification" for 6 figures position at google. It is known as one of the most complicated software work for a reason. He will make far more money in any industry he goes to than he would staying as a game developer.

That's a shame, if true. Despite his ability to act like a jerk sometimes, I like the guy. He always says what's on his mind, whether or not I agree with it.

I'll give a polite response if I feel something warrants it, but for the most part, no, I don't. A lot of these people are my customers, and they can think what they want. Far be it from me to criticize them for it.

My first game contains a myriad of pun/jokes, including the following:

Item: Polish Remover
Description:
Hitler

A Polish newspaper got wind of this, and ran it along with my website, E-mail address, and Twitter handle. I obviously received hundreds, if not thousands, of hate mail. Even a few phone calls.

I ignored them all.

What was lashing out going to do? What was insulting people going to do? I couldn't change their minds, and they couldn't change mine. I remained silent. It blew over.

PR, man.

That's kind of what I was saying. I learned what was actually constructive, learned what was just stupid, and let the just straight up hate fall to the side. I've gotten into heated conversation before, but its always because we're actually having a discussion. Even then, you learn when someone isn't going to change their opinion and when its time to stop.

I've always thought he's just fucking around on twitter, except not behind anonymity.

I don't play his games, but I think he should continue doing whatever the fuck he wants and ignore everything else.

What's great is now it's 100% confirmed that a good chunk of the people in these discussions have been spitting venom on a person with a mental illness.

Not that anyone will care or change their mind.

Maybe Fish was LYING. That'll justify it, yeah. Lying. That must have been it.

Bipolar disorder really explains everything thinking about it. Hope he gets the help he needs and definitely feel for him but he has to seek the help he needs and get through this

I am kind of sincerely worried that the next thing we hear about Phil Fish is that he was found dead in his apartment, though. He says he's leaving video games and in the past he has said that making games is all he's good for.

Whether he is being sincere or not is for another day, but this whole situation that started today is just sad really.

Very frustrating watching this scenario unfold when it probably could have been avoided completely.

And pretty disappointed by some reactions of people on here

That's a big issue with me. He knows he reacts to people, legit comments and the more tart ones, yet he continues to respond? At some point, you just gotta remove yourself.

If you make creative work, it's going to happen, and the bigger you are, the larger the wave. That's a part of life, and you have to decide to either walk away or avoid it.

Pretty shameful reactions in this thread.

Both sides were being dicks to each other, but people cheering on games being canceled and people leaving game development have no respect from me.

It's hard to miss a dude who makes a ton of money off his game while also telling people who are not as successful to choke on his dick while bragging about awards he's won.

But today, the Internet is the real monster~~

I am kind of sincerely worried that the next thing we hear about Phil Fish is that he was found dead in his apartment, though. He says he's leaving video games and in the past he has said that making games is all he's good for.

He can't even leave Twitter right, he'll be back. I can already see the post.

"FEZ 2 IS COMING. CHOKE ON ALL OF THE DICKS."

The guy acts like a dick on twitter but this is sad to see. I don't buy that this is just about twitter shit flinging though. Seems more like the straw that broke the camels back.

Jeff Green just posted this on twitter, seems like good advice to me:

Jeff Green said:
@Greenspeak: If I'm Phil Fish (and most days I am not), I'd just say I was quitting the industry and then quietly go make the game out of the spotlight.

:(

He made one of my favorite games of the generation, I'm super depressed knowing I won't get to experience more of his work.

Fuck off people saying "good riddance" and the like. If that's how you feel you probably wouldn't have played his future games anyway so this really has nothing to do with you. That other people on't be able to pay a game they were anticipating is nothing to celebrate.

Phil kept stacking domino on top of domino until it all fell down. He never did anything to alleviate the hate he was getting. No he would exacerbate it EVERY single time. He was always quick with a smart-ass remark or vitriol to spout at somebody. He never had anything good to say about anything and wined about everything else. People say he didn't do anything to deserve what he got. I would disagree. He never did any ONE thing to deserve it. If you build a mountain out of shit...well, you are just going to wind up with one great big mountain of shit...

Im a little lost...if the verbal abuse was just at the hands of some random people on twitter/other social networks...I cant see that forcing anyone out of anything they like to do.

Honestly, if you dont actually know the person, does the comment really hurt that bad?

For those of us working in the industry, I think it's pretty laughable that he's done this. We all deal with an insane amount of pressure. He's just another guy who couldn't handle it. Couldn't last 9 months at Ubisoft? Laughable. Working at Ubisoft is cush compared to a lot of what people face at other companies.

So then he goes and makes a succesful game, has a twitter account where he constantly argues with people, then he whines and cries all the time about other peoples opinions of him and his game.

Legend in his own mind, self-entitled twat. Good riddance Phil, you give all game developers a bad name with your actions.

Watching Indie Game the Movie, it was apparent that he wasn't going to be able to handle the pressure. Guys like him never last in the industry, it's all too common.

Well, fuck Marcus Beer. What a fucking leech.

We'll see how Fish feels about this whole thing after a good night's sleep (or a bit of distance altogether).

i was quite looking forward to fez 2 on ps4 (platform not confirmed or announced). never played fez 1.

much luck in whatever he chooses to do next.

Good fucking riddance. This industry immediately just got better now that this assclown is out of it. Go tell McDonalds customers to kill themselves when you're angrily flipping their burgers.

good for him, bad for the rest of us

great talent lost, but it was clearly wrecking up his life, he's better off doing something else

I'll receive him with open arms if he ever decides to come back, but he needs to exercise in either growing a thicker skin or learning how to do low-profile, because his personality's not doing him any favors
