Phil Fish has Twitter tantrum, cancels Fez 2 and goes home with his ball

"I´m better than you", "Suck on my dick", "choke on it", "you are worthless"... dude had many classics.

So then you'd also say that Annoyed Gamer should apologize and extend the olive branch since he initiated the mud slinging here? You could theoretically say that he had the right to call him names and disrespect him in public for money, because Phil Fish said something about someone or something else sometime, but I don't think that's correct.

Did Beer apologise at any point for repeatedly calling him and tosser unprovoked and telling him to fuck himself because he didn't want to give the press a story?

I don't know. What does Beer have to do with it?
I judge Fish on his own behaviour, I don't measure it against others.
Guy came across as a narcissistic ass who constantly fed on the attention his shitty behaviour garnered him. Let him have his meltdown I say.

Phil Fish is an insecure, arrogant jerk. He gets attacked because of his attacks, and he attacks because he gets attacked. The root problem is him.

That being said, Fez is one of many great games, and I wish him the best of luck with whatever he ends up doing. I just hope his attitude and means of approaching people changes or he's going to have a hard time not being self-employed.

dude's just a guy, people think he needs to act a certain way because he's known and he just kept acting as random internet guy. In my experience it was more refreshing and real that reading a bunch of bullshit responses about everything that are produced to keep everyone happy, because if he said something I dont agree with? I carry on with my life and dont give a shit. He's just a fucking dude, that is not me, why should I be enraged by the stuff he says? I get a lot more disturbed by how fake everyone else is

Spot on.

Man needs some therapy. Hope he recovers some sanity points. His tweets did not seem to come from a happy place. It was like watching an open wound. Loved Fez and would probably have loved #2.

If you are socially inept, and what you say can draw the ire of others, you don't get up on a platform and speak to millions. It's that simple. If you choose to, you have to be ready for people to argue back, and be equally offensive.

Phil Fish shouldn't have to be tolerated. If he wants to speak, he can speak. He has to understand the consequences of that. If he can't handle it, he shouldn't be on Twitter. Nobody demands he be a public face; I'd have to do a Google search if I wanted to find out who made Limbo.

Fish chose this, and he couldn't handle it. He hasn't been targeted, he put a bulls-eye on his arse and started twerking.

I'm more depressed now that socially inept people are hated by the world in general, and this is just proof. I kind of just want my life to end now. I get more and more depressed the more I read. I don't want to live on a world where people with social problems or introverts are hated.

Oh, and I'm also a moron because I don't know the definition of the word tact, I guess. Why do I try.

Attacks others and then cries when he gets attacked.
Prides himself on being "indie" and goes all in when promoting one massive multinational vs. another.

I find it hard to feel sympathy or figure out why I should care.

If he does get out of the industry, I think it is the worse for it. Say what you will about the man (I happen to see an intelligent, thoughtful, funny, angry, dickish HUMAN), we all have flaws
except me
. In idea alone, Fez is awesome. Whether or not you have played or even hated the game, his creativity and the ideas that him and those like him bring to video games are a great thing. Fez was amazingly original and should be celebrated.

Wow, talk about totally missing the point...

Makes good comments about shitty practices in the games media.
Gets a lot of abuse as a result.
Leaves the Games Industry
Is somehow the bad guy.

In all these Phil Fish threads people are appalled at what he said. It was an insult. A pretty funny one too.
People aren't "appalled". They are calling him an asshole. I know this is the internet, but let's not pretend like there are no emotions in between perfectly calm and appalled.

When you attack people with vitrol, people aren't going to like you. That's just the way it is.

In any case, I'm guessing that everyone, pro-Fish or anti-Fish, can agree that this is for the best, right? People defending him won't have to suffer him being "bullied", and people that can't stand him won't have to suffer him... period. There was no way anything good could come from further continued interaction between him and the Internet at large.

I hope he reconsiders. I understand he gets too affected by the negativity but I wish he could realize there are a ton of people that appreciate his creativity is well.

Holy shit, just getting caught up with this all and seen this:
PRvFI9U.jpg

Just... just wow. When he inevitably comes crawling back, and as Marcus also suggests, we all know he will, media should just straight up shun him. Hell, co-workers too. You don't want nunna dat crazy. Just walk away. Phil Fish is NO GOOD 4 U.

There is a level of take only one can deal with. Not everyone can TAKE everything thrown at them. One insult, two insult maybe three...fine. Waking up everyday with insults, possibly even death threats, and still trying to get by by being me when nothing else is good enough is something that NO ONE can take. I'm a calm person, and I rarely get mad, but sometimes it becomes overwhelming at times when the added stress of work , school, family hits me and using social networking as my only venting platform of choice.

Then in his case, when I do that , I get blasted for it on a daily basis. Where i'm from, a lot of suicide happens here from people who can't even walk the streets without being criticized. Don't even get me started on people who convince themselves that a significant person is talking about them when they are, that subliminal speech and what not. I've been through it and I've lost a lot of people I knew to the same stuff.

If he didn't want to be treated like an internet tough guy (see: with contempt), then maybe he should have tried more to relate to people like they were worthy of respect. He didn't do this. And now here we are.

He's just doing this as one big attention stunt, hoping people will beg him to come back.

Not gonna happen.

The "abuse" he received was entirely the result of his poor behavior. Cause and effect. If he were truly passionate about games, he would carry on without feeling the need to inflate his ego whenever possible. I never played Fez but that type of behavior wouldn't be tolerated in *any* professional industry.

Don't project yourself onto Phil Fish.

He's not socially awkward. He's a famous indie dev. He was the star of a documentary. He spits venomous comments on the Internet, and on panels in front of hundreds of people. I wouldn't call him an introvert.

I hope he reconsiders. I understand he gets too affected by the negativity but I wish he could realize there are a ton of people that appreciate his creativity is well.

unfortunately that's jut not how people work, we're not as inclined to voice our satisfaction.

I think you need to take a deep breath. All types of people everywhere are hated at any given time, i know your situation may present the situation skewed against your favor but trust me that's not the case.

It may be difficult but try to talk to someone face to face about the issues you're having.

Good. Dudes an idiot and his game wasn't even that great.

He's an attention whore who trolled like crazy in the past and is surprised when people call him out on his shit. Good riddance.

You do understand that was said in defense to someone who was directly naming and hurling insults at him for money and pleasure in a professional capacity, correct?

Eh nothing excuses that. there's no reason for you to tell someone to kill themselves whether jokingly or not (especially in text where it's very hard to tell either way).

More stellar fiction, this time laden down with some delicious excluded middle. Your scenario is hardly the only "other possibility", one obvious one that springs to mind is that he doesnt in fact have any/has a self diagnosed mental condition. After all the only "evidence" is one line in one forum post and he hasnt mentioned it again. You would also think, given the creators implied narrative, that it would have been mentioned in the documentary on him.

I also dont "seem to think" anything other than that you shouldnt be putting forward your own assumptions about an unverified mental issue as fact or some kind of defence of his behaviour.

Okay, you're right, sorry.

But he admitted his condition under stress too, read the rest of his post.

You're still right though, he could be faking it. But I should know better, I studied to know if a person has a mental disease/condition, and he exhibits obvious signs of this. I'm not making assumptions, but I shouldn't have taken his word as fact either. I'm not defending him anyway, I said that he shouldn't have told Beer to go kill himself, but that we should at least understand the conditions in which he is. Whether or not he is bipolar, doesn't matter, what I know is that he has a mental condition, and he needs help. That is not an assumption I am making. That is something I am sure of.

But don't take my word as a fact or a defense of his behavior. I just don't condone people abusing of him either.

Is somehow the bad guy.

People gave him kudos when he spoke about that stuff but the insults and overall immaturity cloud over all of that completely. If he hadn't lashed out at all and left it at those remarks (and *maybe* specifically mentioning all the "journalist" outlets that use those shitty practices) then he would have been fine. But no he chose to lash out about a guy commenting on how Fish reacted to being asked to comment on, at the time, a rumor.

When you attack people with vitrol, people aren't going to like you. That's just the way it is.

If he was a completely nice guy, but still socially inept, he'd be just as disliked, it just wouldn't be as vocal. If you have bad social skills, you've been born cursed. Most people won't like you. Whereas people with good social skills are universally loved and successful at anything they do. That's just the way things are.

I don't have to like it.

Being socially inept and introverted and being an ass aren't mutually exclusive. Fish fell into the latter group for many people.

I'd say the majority of GAFers are probably introverts, not sure what you're talking about there.

You know, I'd make a thread in the Off Topic. I certainly understand where you are coming from, and you aren't the only person to feel that way.

But being accepted, and loved for who you are isn't a right. If you can appreciate yourself, and all of your idiosyncrasies, you can expect others to.

If you choose to remain socially inept, or you do not strive to become less introverted, there will always be a type of person who doesn't like you. If you appreciate your own standpoint, nothing else matters.

Some people aren't meant to scream into a microphone. It doesn't mean that others will not appreciate that, just that the majority won't.

And Fish is an asshat. You don't seem like one.

Dude I consider myself Mr. Anthropy and empathize with most of what you've written today but you really need to take it easy. We're in the subset of humanity that

a) posts on NeoGAF
b) knows who Phil Fish is
c) knows who Marcus Beer is
d) follows a Twitter war between Phil Fish and Marcus Beer

Take heart, we're all socially inept introverts in our own way.

also I think Twitter should require a license to use, handed out based on perceived mental well-being and general temperament

slightly fascistic, yes, but let's be honest, it'd do a lot of people a lot of good

also maybe we'd get relevant shit trending for once

If you actually want to end your life now then might I suggest you contact a local suicide prevention hotline or call a friend? At the same time I'd also suggest that if you find this thread upsetting that you should stop reading it

That's not really what I'm getting at. Phil's reaction to these kinds of comments is orders of magnitude worse than "being appalled", it appears to be ruining his life. I find it hard to follow the idea that people's reactions to his comments are supposed to be overblown, but Phil's reaction to that in turn is understandable.
