What the people who complain about XV fashion wear

My mistake. Either way, point stands. That's still very respectable for the series.
edit: The above confirms that, IMO.
I just laughed out loud. What in god's name would make you think was VIII was popular?
I would guess maybe 10-20% of the people that bought it liked it.

Again, I'm talking about quality and not popularity. Pay attention. I didn't put words in your mouth if it's exactly what you're saying!Yup, that's exactly what I said. How about you don't put words in my mouth?
You can dislike VIII all you want, saying it killed the franchise is being disingenuous. It's one of the most popular entries and is still loved by many fans.
*you're
Yea, I definitely expect the TGS video to be "Exploration First Look (TGS 2013)", similar to how the debuted the gameplay. The focus of the E3 trailer was clearly to give it that action feel, to appeal to the western audience. And from the looks of all forms of social platforms. It definitely did its job. I've never seen so many "I've never played a FF before, but can I jump into this one without playing the earlier ones?" before. TGS has to appeal to the traditional RPG crowd, so I expect to see more of this vast open world that Nomura keeps hyping.
If I don't see exploration at TGS, I'd be really disappointed.
FFXII was awesome.
ITT:
If there's anything, in gaming, people like more than Final Fantasy, is hating Final Fantasy.
Shrug.

I think you're right. But here's the irony: FF is currently targeting a Japanese youth demographic. And that very specific shounen style is what's turning off new players like overseas youth - who aren't Japanese, and are no longer a generation of anime fetishists.
Really? I thought it was a revelation. What didn't you like about it?
I really mean no offense again but to me as a megaten fan as always, this is THE ugliest case of fanboyism gone bad. DMC folks, Rare fans, Mass Effect fans (you name it) got nothing on FF fanboys .
I am very very very really fucking sorry to say this but its time some people realized they are outdated and irrelevant.
The market has been spoken and has been speaking for years now. It's the same market that refused me a shiny Megaten game, it's the same market that never let me play a game with that tri-ace tech demo. I am sorry. I really am. Final Fantasy is doing well.
Actually it did. FFXII is liked more on GAF but overall people did not like it as much. It was a drastic change which made the gameplay offline MMO and the Character/ story were easily forgettable.
But it wasn't worse than FF13 because FF12 was still a good game 13 was just bad.
I think thats another reason for the series decline. Fans haven't gotten a proper Final Fantasy game since FFX. FFXI was online, FFXII was an offline mmo drastic gameplay changes (still a good game and the theme and setting was on the right track), and then finally when FF13 looked like it was back to glory it was the worst of all.
Then we got one whole console generation of shitty sequels.
This.
Terrible entries in popular series often sell well, but if they're terrible enough and get bad word of mouth, they tarnish the brand and affect the sales of sequels. Word of mouth can only happen after people have already bought the game and JRPGs tend to be very front-loaded in terms of sales, selling the bulk of the copies they're ever going to sell in the first week or so, so the bulk of the audience buys it trusting that they'll enjoy it.Yeah a game with 6.6 million sales that surpassed IX and XII.

To be more appealing to western youth... I think it ironically has to mature a bit.
This.
I like being able to actively control my entire party. I'm not interested in pawning stuff off on the a.i. or emulating an mmo experience. I'm not really interested in the more action oriented direction they seem aimed at now that their mmo phase has ended either.
I tried messing with options in FFXII to make it more palatable but it just didn't work. It's a shame because aside from the battle system and not being able to build my characters the way I wanted I loved the rest of it.
Did you play vanilla version or International Zodiac? Because vanilla version literally gave you all the freedom to build your characters the way you wanted. And people complained about this!I tried messing with options in FFXII to make it more palatable but it just didn't work. Terrible entries in popular series often sell well....What were the percentage drops for both?
Well I must have missed that. What do people want? More random battles and ATB? You just need to play Dragon's Dogma/ Demon's Souls to see where it's at. Final Fantasy was there first with XII but they just didn't realise it. Not saying FF XII was perfect but it was a bold step in the right direction.
Dragons' Dogma / Demon's Souls are action RPGs and definitely not where FF needs to go (although a FF spin off in that vein would nice).
People dont want FFXII's battle system the psuedo offline MMO gameplay experience where you set up commands and the game plays its self.
Personally the best direction for the series is to mix FFX and FFXII. FFXII had this amazing free roaming world they need that but use an ATB based system (I know FFX wasn't ATB) and not some Kingdom Hearts / MMO action game one.

<3 Kobun.
Tastes have been veering more towards western RPGs.
He is right. You are crazy VIII was loved when it came out and still has a huge fanbase. There is a loud crowd that hates it but its no a majority.
The reason FF9 didn't sell as well as 7 or 8 was because they went back to the classing chibi characters and people though it was kiddy maybe. Even though it was one of the best FF games.
Bullshit.
Turn based has been done to death.

Yes, yes FF7 sold 10 million copies, but that was a watershed moment in gaming. A real phenomenon of the medium.
I'm hoping to use sales data as a way of testing the hypothesis: has FFXIII tarnished the FF brand? You do realize that FF X was more than 10 years ago ? You do realize I don't give a FLYING FUCK about Final Fantasy but it so pisses me of that people twist and falsify the CURRENT state of the industry to rationalize their nostalgia drenched fanboyism ?
Jesus Gaia Raging Christ !
Yet ironically FF did best sales/praise when it was turn based. Seems to me the new systems would be more in line with "to death".
You said I was calling you ignorant for not liking something I do. NOWHERE in my post did I state or imply such a thing.Again, I'm talking about quality and not popularity. Pay attention. I didn't put words in your mouth if it's exactly what you're saying!
Is this the part of the thread where we starting making stuff up to defend our positions?
It's just someone making up facts to fit their agenda against VIII and it's quite hilarious. I'm laughing right along with him.Whenever someone says this... I know they're basing it off anecdotal evidence from themselves and a couple of friends.
FFVIII fandom is massive.
It has some detractors... but painting it like some maligned entry? Nope.
Are we gonna turn this thread into false equivalency hour?
Sounds like you were hanging out at GameFAQs or something. If anything, VIII was even more hated when it came out. You couldn't even mention you liked FFVIII without being branded a moron by every VG community I came across online in 1999. FF fans seemed to really be angry at the time that the game was such low quality.
.
Just figured I'd join you in spouting nonsense.
My sentiments exactly. The influx of sequels no one asked for derailed a once-mighty franchise. No doubt the Final Fantasy name still sells, but their appeal has eroded immensely this past generation. Hopefully we'll see a renaissance for the franchise in the upcoming gen.I don't think FF is dead, but XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns and the failed release of XIV have not helped. It has been a colossal failure of a generation for Square.
Toriyama wanted for murder.

This is all too over dramatic.
