‘Pacific Rim’ $9M Opening In China Biggest Ever For Warner Bros: Sequel Likely

EXCLUSIVE: I’ve just learned that momentum is building for a Pacific Rim based on the international box office for the Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros summer tentpole. The latest development is the 3D sci-fi actioner’s Wednesday opening in China to a record-breaking $9M. That’s a new high for any Warner Bros release and 23% bigger than for any Harry Potter film. Pacific Rim grossed a huge 70% of market share there. This is after the pic broke through to become the #1 film internationally on July 19-21 as it rolled out into less than half the global territories. Besides China, Pacific Rim today released in Spain and Japan, and August 9th in Brazil. The result is that screenwriter Travis Beacham (who had the idea for the film) and co-scribe/director Guillermo Del Toro’s film based on Legendary’s homegrown comic book will likely have a sequel. No one is yet saying this movie is going to turn a profit due to the high cost of its Industrial Light & Magic CGI which sent the budget to $180M-$220M. Unfortunately, U.S. theatrical sales are not expected to exceed $100M all in so overseas coin was crucial. But international was always a big part of Pacific Rim‘s strategy in a crowded summer marketplace. After Sunday the pic’s foreign cume is $140M from 52 territories and its worldwide total is $224M. As I’ve said before, Legendary’s mega-financier Thomas Tull has the luxury of mining this marginal outcome into a franchise. Warner Bros underwrote 25% of the film and receives the global distribution fees.

So for the sequel it'll definitely be getting a budget cut. There goes my Tilda Swinton idea.

To be honest, I thought the backstory given at the beginning of the movie was really interesting stuff, and wouldn't mind a prequel.

YESSSSSSSS!

Please go the route of old Godzilla movies and introduce aliens from the THIRD PLANET FROM A BLACK HOLE!

Making them look like green gorillas is optional, but would be appreciated!

Yeah and they recycle some of the stuff.
Use the chinese/Russian jaeger a lot more.

I was actually hoping to add someone new to the cast (Tilda Swinton) as an original engineer for the Jaeger program because [SEQUEL RUMOR POSSIBLE SPOILER]
humans linking with the Kaiju thus leading to a Jaeger/Kaiju link, fit in Tilda into the story through real time and flash backs
and [Pacific Rim SPOILER]
that'll also give them room to bring back the real star of the film, Idris Elba, into flashback sequences since he kicked the bucket and they could also expand on his backstory a bit more
.

Because that's all I really want. Tilda Swinton in the next Pacific Rim.

Thanks China!

Guess Crimson is gonna make a comeback then! If there is a sequel, they should at least shoot some actually seens in Hong Kong and not in a backlot in Toronto somewhere.

Wonderful.

In the sequel I hope they spend their story time to show
plot threads that aren't foregone conclusions. It was obvious who'd pilot what, and the trailer spoiled the general getting in the cockpit. Some interaction with a foreign pilot besides the australian ass would have been way more interesting.

Good job rest of the world!

America doesn't deserve a sequel =(

Joking aside, a 1-2 season animated show would help tons to make it happen. I think this is a movie done primarily for kids, yet the advertisement and general marketing around it missed a lot of chances to point it that way.

How would a sequel even work though?

New rift, Mecha-Kaiju. No joke

Fuck yes!

To be honest, I thought the backstory given at the beginning of the movie was really interesting stuff, and wouldn't mind a prequel.
This would also provide a great opportunity to explore the backstories of the Jaeger teams that didn't get enough screen time in the original.
