So "kinda-bomba" guarantees a sequel nowadays?
Go home Hollywood, you're drunk!

Money is in the Merch.

It's not really a "bomba." By the end of its run, it should have a modest amassment with foreign and domestic ticket sales.

In comparison, have you seen the box office tallies of R.I.P.D. or The Lone Ranger?

Wait 9 million opening is a lot? Thought China could pull more than that.

On day dude, and that is 23% than the previous best opening over which was a Harry Potter movie.

The reason its good news is because it means it will be on track with Iron Man 3 and Transformers in China which made a ridiculous amount for the foreign box office

Pretty sweet. Though doesn't Del Toro have like another 20 projects to do first?

He always has a million things in line and rumored to be working on, etc. but I'm pretty sure he'd find the time if this ends up happening.

Was there Pacific Rim merchandise? Serious question, as I haven't seen any. I just typed it into Walmart's site and the only thing related I saw was a book.

This will be the only time I will say this given the fact international crowds are keeping 3d format alive. THANK INTERNATIONAL BASED CROWDS!

But.. but..

No one is yet saying this movie is going to turn a profit due to the high cost of its Industrial Light & Magic CGI which sent the budget to $180M-$220M.

ILM gotta go. The R&D has been done and there must be some other company out there that can do it cheaper.

America doesn't deserve a sequel =(

Joking aside, a 1-2 season animated show would help tons to make it happen. I think this is a movie done primarily for kids, yet the advertisement and general marketing around it missed a lot of chances to point it that way.

New rift, Mecha-Kaiju. No joke

All asian cast for the sequel!

ehhhhhh, it was fair enough to call this a bomb and seriously it didn't do that well.

It's not like it broke Avatar numbers or anything, it barely skirted by. I'm not saying crow shall not be eaten, but lets not get over-zealous about how successful this movie really was.

Yes, NECA has Heroclix and Action Figures and Sideshow is doing a line of $400 statues.

NECA has sold out of the Series 1 and had to make a 2nd production run due to popularity, spend 5min on eBay and look up NECA Gipsy Danger and watch as a $15 action figure ends for $45-75 over the past week

Even the Heroclix are starting to command big $$$, the cases when the movie first opened were $45 shipped, now they are $75-80

Well, 23% higher than any Warner film. Iron Man 3 had $21 million on its opening day, Avengers had $18 million, and Transformers had $17 million. But it is still pretty big when you consider other big film openings--Fast and Furious 6 had $6.9 million and Man of Steel had $5.9 million.

Always knew the international market was going to be this film's savior.

Pro tip for the sequel - Don't release it in the dead-heat of summer. This film would have KILLED in the less competitive spring months.

If nobody in America saw the first one thats going to cut into any profits of a domestic release for a sequel. Seems like a risky gamble unless they gut the budget or tailor it specifically for an international release.

Cancel the apocalypse! :D

Great news, loved the movie, made me feel like a little kid again getting so excited over it. I've still got the main theme in my head.

Well the first was basically based on Hong Kong and featured a Chinese Jaegar, its not too hard to amp that up just a tad more

And I would not say nobody in America saw the first, its not like it made $5-10m. It will probably top out around $100m or just a tad over when all is said and done. If it was not for the massive CGI budget that is not a horrible haul. Especially when you add in US video sales which will be very high if the merchandise sales lately are anything to go by

i want more giant robots.

and i want them to combine into even gianter robots. make it a mile tall, and send it to the alien dimension and make it wreck shit.

Cautiously excited. I really hope they replace both the lead male and female. Their acting/chemistry together was really bad. And it goes without saying, but more mech battles and less everything else please.

thank god they kept Ron Pearlman's character alive, get him in a mech next time please.

I disagree.

According to Wikipedia, a film may be deemed a "box office bomb," if it fails to earn more than the reported cost of its production, distribution and marketing by a wide margin. Its opening in China bodes very well for the remainder of the film's theatrical run.

I don't think anyone involved expected Avatar numbers, but it has fared well enough so far.

Honestly I think Nikki is drunk and spouting off stuff that isn't remotely closed to finalized. Have a hard time believe a good opening in China suddenly makes a sequel likely.

I can't believe it...

But I'm so damn happy. Thank you, China.

Guillermo Del Toro should thank them by having a rebuilt Crimson Typhoon last more than 3 seconds in the sequel.

Why does everyone have a hard-on for Cherno Alpha?

That thing is fucking ugly.
It's a nuclear cooling tower on top of a boxing robot. What's not to like?

China box office sets record until Crimson Typhoon got its ass kicked. I can see chicken feet being thrown at the screen after that.
