Nintendo Wii U 'flogging a dead horse'-BBC UK

Sales of Nintendo's latest games console, the Wii U, have slowed with just 160,000 units sold in the three months to June.

Nintendo has sold 3.61 million units of the Wii U so far and expects to sell nine million units by March 2014.

Overall sales fell nearly 4% to 81.5bn yen ($832m; £549m) but the firm reported a profit for the latest quarter, helped by the weaker value of the yen.

UK Games editor at EGN.com Keza Macdonald told BBC World News that the smartphone market was encroaching on that of handheld consoles.

"The next six months is going to be absolutely crucial for Nintendo... If the Wii U doesn't pick up, it would be sensible to think about launching a new console rather than flogging a dead horse... 160,000 units is dismal".

Nintendo news everywhere O_o

I love this console and Nintendo should do something like price drop .... :(

It's already being sold at clearance prices in the UK but nobody it cares. It needs games & a few miracles.

This is the 3DS all over again -_-

Edit: okay, it seems like people have miss interpreted my post, let me make it clearer. What I meant by my post is how many articles were talking of how Nintendo was "doomed" because the 3DS was not selling well not because the 3DS situation itself.

If they release a new console might be best to wait at least till 2015 to release it. And it better be at least on par with PS4/Xbone.
Also it should be called Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System

Hopefully the coming onslaught of games turn things around. I really don't understand why Nintendo released the console when they did. There's been literally nothing decent at retail since launch except Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate which is a port and Lego City. It's been a barren wasteland of the likes I haven't seen.

Lots of stuff coming out now though so I'm hopeful.

32m worldwide sales later and they're still peddling this line?

Some retail stores dropped it by £100, and I, along with many others would have gladly bought it at that price.

But the games just aren't there... yet.

EGN.com? Don't they mean IGN.com? Not even near eachother on a keyboard, just BBC talking about video game type stuff and of course there was something about smartphones thrown in.

Just for perspective, do we have LTD sales of the Wii U in exclusively the UK considering that is the region where it seems to be doing especially poor?

This is a failure of marketing and branding primarily, with a strong lineup coming towards the end of this year they really need to start pushing it big time.

There was another thread earlier today, I think the Morrison's one, where they stated a price drop had an almost negligable impact on sales. Only moving a few hundred extra the week after the drop.

Bottom line is that there aren't enough exclusive games, and third party games are inferior in just about every way to 360 and PS3 games. Dead online communities, no DLC, or flat out removing features in Arkham Origins' case.

Only took two posts.

One good thing about the Wii U is the name. The name is a big problem why the system failed but it's also a good excuse that Nintendo can recover from.

If the sales continue to suffer, Nintendo can basically pull a Virtual Boy and pull the plug. It's also similar to Coca Cola and New Coke.

Nintendo could vow to support the Wii U and relaunch a new console with a couple of years and call it Wii 2. Immediately people know it's the sequel to the original Wii and all Nintendo has to do is include an updated Wii Remote and pack in the Pro Controller.

Make it on-par with the Xbox One/PS4 and sell it at $299-350 and they have another chance.

They can survive the failure thanks to the name.

With the mainstream press jumping on the DOOMED train, it will only get worse. Same thing happened to the Vita. Uninformed users will be even less interested in buying if everyone tells them the system is already dead.

This thing is going to ride out the rest of it's generation for better or worse. Saturning themselves isn't going to help.

edit: which is to say, I expect the next Nintendo console in 5 years, roughly on schedule.

Wii is DONE. It was a fad. It exploded, then contracted massively. It is not coming back. The name needs to be retired.

Wii U has tons of problems. One is that consumers don't understand what the fuck it is. Retailers don't even understand what the fuck it is.

And the system itself is confusing. It supports WAY too many different kinds of controllers. You should not NEED to support so many different controllers.

'Nintendo' has mindshare still, but 'Wii' is not. Never again should there be a system with 'Wii' in the name. That is certainly part of the problem with Wii U.
