It seems the white man's burden has become increasingly burdensome in 2013. Especially for college students. The result: a small but growing contingent of "white student unions" sprouting on a handful of college campuses across the country with members eager to reignite their racial pride in an increasingly diverse world.

The latest such student group to take shape is located at Atlanta's own Georgia State University, which arguably has the most ethnically diverse student population in the state.

This is causing quite a stir in the school from what i've heard.
 
It's only racist if white people do it. Right?

[edit] Lemme just say, they are dickheads. But white dickheads should be able to organize just as much as any other dickhead. See: the KKK as it is now.

If minorities were included in social activities on college campuses historically there wouldn't BE a need for minorities to have their own groups.

Let's not pretend minorities were welcomed with open arms. Let's not pretend they are today. Get some perspective.

Because in America Whiteness is the DEFAULT. It's the same reason we have Black Entertainment Television channel but not specifically White Entertainment Television. We call those ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS...etc.
 
Thinking about it, AA and immigration may be the only gripes this group could possibly have. And those are misguided as hell. In time they'll be gathering signatures so they can say the n-word without consequence. Cause racial identity conversations will lead nowhere with such a huge umbrella like 'white'.
 
*shrug* 'White pride' carries some negative implications, but I don't think it's something that for sure implies racism. Regardless, if it makes these people happy to congregate like this, and they're harmless - whatevs.

Honestly, student unions based on ethnicity have always made me uncomfy, but whatever makes people happy and keeps them harmless.

What if white americans of european ancestry. Dont think american culture is their culture?

And why should they not have the right to define themselves among themselves as everybody else?

I don't see the point of a club. North America is dominated by white culture. Can't say the same about being black and the struggles associated with it.

Why should white americans of european ancestry be denied to cultivate their history, culture and ancestry?

They have a "right" to do whatever. That's not the issue. They have a right to do what they want. We have a right to critique.

White Americans (last I checked the overwhelming majority are of European ancestry) damn near purely define American culture and have since the nation was founded. Do you mean: What if White Americans of European ancestry don't think American culture is White enough these days....
 
Honestly, people have every right to express their community. I think like what bothers me is what MorisUkunRasik mentioned, these perceived gripes and injustices placed upon them as whole.

I can't help but shake my head.

Well sure, go ahead. It just seems extremely redundant because white culture is everywhere. You don't need a club to know "hey white people did this!". Everyone knows what being white is but not everyone knows what being black is nor does life make it easy for the blacks.

White Pride is almost always associated with racism. Don't be dense.

They're not and they've never been. White Americans of European ancestry are the majority in America.

Your culture is the default.
Your art is the default.
Your music is the default.
Your history is the default.
Your literature is the default.
Damn near everything in America is measured against White cuture. Yours is the gold standard by which all other cultures (rightly or wrongly) are judged.

The reason there have been minority groups is because historically minorities were either not allowed access to the majority's group or were "discouraged" through other means from participation. So minorities banded together to form their own groups. Does such a dire situation exist for White Americans today? Truly?

Are Whites in American society marginalized? Truly?

Is White culture in America no longer THE default? Truly?

The answer is no.
 
I've seen white people who have tremendous pride in and celebrations for being Irish, Italian, Jewish, and so on. If someone wanted to make a college association under those banners - and I'm sure many people do - most would not have a problem. But a White Student Union? What exactly are you celebrating or identifying with? That's a pretty huge banner. Especially in America where I can't really think of some unified, shared experience that really unites even the three groups I mentioned (beyond just being white, of course).

lol, as though [Euro country prefix]-Americans are somehow denied that right. Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, Polish-Americans ... these groups--and others--proudly invoke their ancestry.

I really feel uncomfortable judging someone for something they haven't actually exhibited or done. I always assume the best unless given reason otherwise. If this union at Georgia state starts saying some racist things, then I'd feel comfortable with it.

And a lot of access to Fox "news" updates about what "the blacks" are up to.

vv: cultivating "a safe haven for white culture" on every college campus in America. Sure they have the right, but should it really be done?

But most white Americans of European ancestry are not italian, or irish. Or any other ONE specific ethnicity of europe.

But i still think most of them identify as a people. Thus have every right to define themselves, and the right to cultivate whatever they want to cultivate.
