Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

IMAX is pretty far away from me, and I'm not a fan of 3D. It's also annoying having to wear glasses over my glasses.

I'm glad the theater I saw it in had it on one of their biggest screens though.

I still don't get how
they could determine anything from the Kaiju drifts. They looked like a garbled mess.
I'm pretty sure that we just saw small clips
but drifting means going from the very first memory you and your companion(in this case the kaiju) have until the moment your are drifting, going trough every memory of his/her life, you cannot focus on one, but you get to see every memory, that's why you have to trust your drift copilot, cause they will know everything about you

FUCK. My Crimson Typhoon figure's lower leg pivots weakened so now he can't stand straight up. Not to mention when I got it, his anterior left arm easily pops off. Should I return it? I bought it from here and it arrived 5 days ago.

Yes, if they accept returns i would do it. Else if you are going to repair it yourself i recommend glue from gamesworkshop (the super glue) very good.

Just saw it this weekend and while it didn't blow me away or put me at the edge of my seat, I did enjoy it quite a bit. What felt most refreshing was that is was essentially an apocalypse / "the world is ending" movie that didn't feel completely dramatic and somber. Del Toro really seemed to want to go for a more breezy, high octane action movie and in that he has succeeded. Now I'm curious if I would be able to appreciate the Godzilla movies that Pacific Rim is inspired by (any particular recommendations Gaf?).

Though, what I did find a bit disappointing is that we only saw the Chinese and Russian Jaegers in action so briefly, especially compared to the Australian and American ones which we saw so often. They could have balanced this out a bit more in my opinion. Maybe they will include some more scenes in a director's cut for Bluray?

Anyway, if there is to be a sequel at some point, crossover with Godzilla or not, I'll be sure to check it out though.

Yup

Went out to watch this movie yesterday... turns out, this shit is only shown in 3D.

What a complete shit gimmick that completely ruins everything.

Good summary indeed Jintor! If we can't be satisfied with giant mechs punching giant monsters in the face occasionally when watching a movie, then we truly seem to have collectively grown old and stale as a species, haven't we?

That is unfortunate and somewhat odd. Here in the UK (Reading area) it is available in both 2D and 3D. I went to the 2D version as well, though some in this thread swear by the 3D experience for this movie. A shame if you would have to miss it because of this reason though. Maybe you can check for other cinemas in the area?

Yeah man... I just can't watch 3D at all. The last movie was The Avengers and I remember hating the movie so much. Then I rewatched it on Blu-ray and suddenly, it was one of the better movie experiences I've ever had ._. 3D sucks.

I wish we had other cinemas in my area... we don't :_:

Nope non-native 3d movies suck and thats what turning people away from 3d in general. You wouldnt find many people complaining about the 3d in say Hugo and Avatar for example, BIG difference.

That said the 3d for the cgi fights in PR are amazing for a non-native 3d flick!

The CG stuff is native 3D whereas the live action stuff is not.

So I went to see the movie, it was the 2d version. The plot was dumber than I expected but the glorious robot fights more than made up for it!

The fights are 3D native, that is why.

The Golden Gate Bridge shot really made me glad I went for the IMAX 3D.

So fucking true. My first screening was IMAX 3D. My second viewing was on a standard screen. I didn't feel too big of a change in the experience somehow, but for my 3rd viewing I returned to IMAX 3D and boy was I mistaken and the exact moment that became apparent was the kaiju gripping onto the bridge. Phenomenal.

Ebay eh? Was it new? If so then that's pretty tough cuz that's more of a factory defect. You can try asking.

Haha that's my viewing order as well (IMAX > regular > IMAX). The sound is what stood out the most for me. The regular showing cannot compare to the amazingness of the IMAX speakers.

Going back to that first shot, my jaw dropped and got massive goosebumps on my first IMAX viewing. I took my gf to the other IMAX viewing and she reported the same thing happened to her lol.

If you're brave you can use clear nail polish to basically make a joint slightly bigger so it'll fit more snug.

Saw this yesterday. My complaint, not enough monster fighting scenes. But this is always my complaint whenever I watch kaiju flicks.

I felt like some of the monster's design resembled those monsters that Gamera fought, like Gyaos and such.

I preferred the standard screen personally. The action was much easier to follow. The opening scene in IMAX3D was a jumbled mess.

I only watched it in 2D. My theater had a great sound system so I didn't miss out on the audio. Probably not as good as true IMAX's audio but I don't care for paying more and having a harder time seeing what's going on.

Glad to see this movie doing well overseas. I don't know if it can reach 400 mil, but heck World War Z is almost at 500!

Slowly but surely.

I have a question about this...
How come Humanity hasn't been wiped out since the Jaeger project has been cancelled since 5 years when Idris Elba asks for the main character to get back on his team ?

It hadn't been cancelled until the events of the film began. They were just losing fights to the Kaiju for a good while, thus losing Jaegers.

Saw this movie, finally, the other night. It was loads of fun to watch. I can't wait for it to go to the cheap theater so I can take my son.

To add to that,
once the Jaeger project was disowned/dropped by the global government, Stacker started funding it 'himself' via Chow's pocketbook by giving him first dibs on the fallen Kaiju corpses.

They kept funding it while the wall was being built. They cancelled it when the wall was almost finished.

There is a spoiler thread by the way.

I think this movie changed my life, lol.
I LOVE IT, watched it 8 times now. And I plan on watching it once more before it disappears from the movie theaters over here.

I love it so much I will be cosplaying Newt Geiszler (yes it's easy, shirt, glasses and you are set), but I will also get those awesome arm tattoos(temporary, as of now). And I wrote a song, but I don't know how to sing, so I'm gonna autotune the shit out of my voice. I hope to finish it by saturday (aka K-day,aka Jaegercon 2013).

Just saw this. Wish the other crews were fleshed out a bit more. The design of the Russian jaeger was so awesome!

I'd love to know if any of the designers took inspiration from maschinen krieger (sp?).

Just came back from my second IMAX viewing. Amazing movie. Words can hardly describe the amount of awesome. I love every bit of it, and can't wait for the blu-ray to hit the shelves Secretly hoping that this will blow some new life in the mecha/kaiju genre. It absolutely shows that, when done right, live action mecha can definitely work.

I love that Del Toro didn't overboard with romance storylines or unnecessary shit surrounding rivalry between pilots and stuff. There was just enough of it, but it remained subtle enough not to get annoying. Also, Idris Elba stole the show, and Rinko Kikuchi is cute (but nowhere turned into a sexualized one-dimensional character thank god). Didn't recognize she was the same person portraying Naoko in Norwegian Wood. Hope to see more of her in the future, possibly in a sequel?

Only Photoshop CS6!

If anyone is interested in a print or a t-shirt I've just uploaded the design to my Redbubble store!!

Wonderful design, thank you for uploading it. Just ordered one. :)

I've must of seen a completely different film. Both me and my younger cousin could barely stay awake. Aside from a good (battle?) scene here and there, it was boring. We found ourselves not really caring for any of the characters on screen.

Sorry guys, I'm glad all of you seem to have collectively enjoyed it and are sharing in your various favorite parts, but I honesty hated the movie from start to finish.

Cliche/cheesy writing
Bad acting
ho hum CG

Sorry, I just did not like it on any level.

I kind of dragged my feet in seeing it. Movies are so expensive nowadays I'm always a bit hesitant to throw down to see them. Boy am I glad with this film. SO GOOD. I'm still thinking about all the action scenes several days later. Loved the OST, loved the action. Some aspects of the film could of course be better and I felt the Mako Mori character oddly came off as a bit "childish" for lack of a better word but the film was still well worth the money.

Not such how they really left room for a sequel but I agree with others than say if this actually gets a sequel, they need to franchise it up with more swag, a TV show, etc.

This is what happens when people go in wanting to hate something. Opinion had been formed already.

This is just the part where they must let everyone know.

i think he went to see Grown Ups 2 by accident.

People are in love with this movie, so they don't see the flaws or really care about them, glaring as they may be. Other people see this love, and rush to 'sharp knees. would not bang.' That's just the way of the world. While I enjoyed the movie, it's deeply flawed in pacing, plot, and some characters. That's ignoring all the defying physics stuff going on, which I'm happy to do. Doesn't change the fact that the main character was a sculpted wooden board in a blond wig. Was he blond? I can't actually remember. That's how much of an impression he left.
