Johnny Manzeil allegedly being investigated by the NCAA not allowed to talk to media

Usain Bolt doesn't run for free either. Olympic stars in any sport make tons of money from endorsements. NCAA players aren't allowed to do that.

Think were on 2 different things here. His point was if we start paying players olympic sports will go bye bye from college because they make no money. Football and sometimes basketball make money in college.

So all those sports that lose money (read: olympic sports) will be cut.

Football is popular and it makes a shitton of money, you really don't think the athletes should be compensated?
Is it better for that money to go people who do not play the game (which can be quite dangerous)?

I don't care if it's a religion. They are properly compensated. Those student athletes signed a contract to play at the school. It's commonly known as signing day. If they don't want to play by the rules established then they should take their talents elsewhere. It's that simple. They're playing a dangerous game that they willingly signed up for. Never in a million years will I feel sorry for or clamor for student athletes to get paid. It is such a ridiculous notion that I can't believe what I'm reading.

It's a little unfair to say they get all this for free when they're playing for a team that is generating millions.

And go where?

Manziel is an idiot

Kinda how I feel. Bullshit rules are bullshit but guess what?

They are the rules. You can't underage drink and you can't sell memorabilia.

Abide by that shit, bide your time and go be a millionaire in the NFL in a year or two.

Again, let me stress, I'm not siding with the NCAA. I think they are garbage the way they profit off their players. I'm saying that for Manziel, the bigger goal is the NFL. And the MILLIONS there. I would do nothing to fuck that up if I were him.

Im not just saying those are the rules, I think all the things players get free now is more than enough. So they can either go with that, or they can go with the other options
Why do you get to decide that it's enough?
Seriously, would you be okay if all the companies that have [insert your profession here] colluded to say that you're not allowed to make more than x dollars, because hey, it's enough, and if you don't like it get another job?

They make millions of dollars for people who don't risk their health playing a pretty dangerous sport, why shouldn't they compensated when coaches get paid millions?

The two are not mutually exclusive, I'm just willing to cut a bit more slack to a 20 years old who is probably overwhelmed by fame.
Thought I will admit, the guy do seem like a giant douche...

I like how we're pretending the NCAA and NFL/NBA aren't in collusion with one another. If the NCAA doesn't want to pay athletes, allow fucking kids to enter the NBA out of high school or establish a minor league for football. They willingly sign up hoping to get drafted later because their are few other options. It's should be illegal what they are doing because it certainly isn't because of skill level.

It's a little unfair to say they get all this for free when they're playing for a team that is generating millions.

If I had it my way, sports and academics would be completely separated. And this would have happened a long, long time ago. I don't care how much the NCAA is generating when it comes to sports teams. Have you all not realized that the NCAA is fucking everyone? Athlete or non athlete? It's their modus operandi.

Not going to lie, I would be perfectly fine with that. Dont like your situation move into one you like. But if my company said hey you can do this thing for 3 years, but if youre really good at it youll make millions after that time is up, I would be fine with that.

You're not eligible to play until a certain age. Plus, doing so will not help your draft prospects.

Thats only the NFL, theres other leagues you can go and get paid.

A simple way to solve this is to cut college out completely. All student athletes should be eligible to skip directly to the professional leagues if they're good enough.

Well i agree, but since the ncaa has made that impossible they should pay the athletes they are forcing to go to school and making them a shit ton of money. It's why i don't think baseball players shold get anything because there is the minors.

All the guys that dont go pro get a free scholarship and degree. If you go pro youve gotten 2 free years, free training and facilities plus exposure and experience for your pro resume

The NCAA and NFL are in collusion to prevent this from happening. Hence the eligibility requirement, which should be illegal. Let's face it Div I college football are NFL's minor leagues.

Sports leagues and players union agree on a cba when a person is eligible for the draft/free agency not the NCAA.

Sure, but not as visible as DI College Football. Any top tier talent will go through the NCAA system because it's the best way to become visible to GMs and scouts.

Oh lol. Well yeah, the Olympic sports go bye. But... so what? If they don't provide entertainment value to the students, why should the university fund them?

LOL.

No 17 year old kid is physically or mentally ready to play in the NFL outta HS. This shit ain't the NBA, brah.

I can just imagine a 17 year old HS QB getting cracked by a grizzled veteran and his career being over in a split second because he was used to getting hit by other 17 year olds before going to the NFL.

Believe me, of any sport, football is the one that doesn't have HS draft picks that I support.

It's for the players safety overall. Too bad the NCAA is broken.

Give 'em a choice:
A) You can agree to get paid a stipend and try to make money off your likeness/whore yourself out, but you will have to pay for your tuition, room & board, etc...
B) Get a scholarship and abide by the established rules.

Which would most choose?

That's not how America works. This is the same exact argument being proposed in the fast food $15 dollar an hour thread and it's never going to happen. Ever. Is it fair for McDonald's CEOs to give themselves raises while the burger flipper can barely get by? Is this fair?

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=637151&highlight=ceo+raise

No, it's not, but that's how America works. Colleges are a business. Their entire existence is to completely burden people while they profit. That's why you're seeing tuition skyrocket year after year. Even in that case, student athletes still have it better than most. Some of those kids were hardly model students and they're still getting a free ride despite their lack of studiousness. My heart does not, and will not, bleed for them. Look around you, if there's a business (and college is one) then the businesses will continue to reap profit while the workers are exploited.

:lol, exactly right.

Want to see what 1 NFL Ready talent does against High School level kids: Jadeveon Clowney's High School Highlights.

Sure, there might be 10-20 HS Seniors a year that might, MIGHT, have a chance to succeed (and survive) going straight to the NFL, but that's just not enough.

You are crazy if you don't think the ncaa had a huge role in that

Spots are limited in the pro league anyway, the NCAA will still get their talent to put on the field. Most players are not ready for the pro's and some are. The old nba cba did not stop talented basketball players going to college then going to the NBA, it seemed like the current cba for the NBA was for the owners to stop spending so much cash on young talent that turned out to be big bust.

So you're entire argument is "because they said so"

Whether amateur athletes should be paid and no longer be amateurs is beside the point. The rules are what they are, if he broke them he should be punished.

And if he broke the rules, he's a dumbass since he's already rich.

Or the NFL could just have a minor league? That would make it more fun for the fans of pro teams. The NFL could even extend its season further if it has a minor league team to rotate in players. Plus NFL teams could really refine player development. Teams could develop their players exactly to the system. And it would give really poor prospects an immediate paycheck at 18 years old.

Schools profit off of graduates as well. So would you propose that non student athletes get paid for their contributions too?
If your argument is they can't get paid directly fine then

BUT

Any other student still can go out there and get paid right? Nothing is stopping a musician, artist, acting, etc major from getting paid for their talents or name while in school.

They also didn't sign a contract to contribute to the NCAA by signing their talents over to a school either.

Manzeil has been really fucking stupid. So no real sympathy towards him

that being said...c'mon son.

I get that paying the athletes is too much as it opens up too many potential issues. and creates an unfair balance to bigger school (although you can argue that's already there). That being said, if a dude wants to benefit off of his own name..why not? He/She technically earned it. And that really doesn't create the unfair advantage since the player still has to be good. Even Joe Smoe from Chattanooga St could technically get paid if he's good enough. If someone wants to pay for your shitty autograph ona 10 dollar baseball cap, then why not let them?

That's where I don't get it. Is it really hurting anyone at that point?

I edited my post but forget about talent, the NCAA owns their talent fine, what about the players image in general?

I see your opposed to the school paying for the talent I can buy into that, but whats wrong with the player selling his image his brand, or any other thing he can sell that is not related to his talent?

If the NFL would adopt the NBA and MLB way of farming for talent this would be a non issue.

uhhhhh what?

the D-League is ass and very few teams use it or even have a team. Hell one could argue the 1 and done rule has fucked both the College Game and the NBA game. Their system is ass too.

Only Baseball got it right

I don't have an issue with that whatsoever. I agree with you there. But I'm not going to budge on the talent aspect of NCAA profitability. First of all, basketball players and MLB players should be able to jump directly to those respective minor leagues or even the majors if they're good enough. The NFL is tricky because it doesn't feature a minor league. If football players want to play in the NFL they have no choice but to sign a contract with a school, honor it, and move on.

Schad's saying there's another Autograph broker saying that Manziel asked to do an Autograph session for money.

NCAA will be irrelevant for the big schools after this year or the next anyway, with the creation of Div 4. They'll form their own organization.

I don't get what the picture above proves. He can sign stuff, he just can't be paid for it.

I guess that makes more sense to expand minor league systems, but I assume the pro leagues don't want to invest in a farm system/minor league unless they can make money off it.

Johnny Manzeil should be paid about a million dollars a year. That is easily his fair market value. He generates many times that for Texas A&M, the SEC, and their TV partners.

Him being investigated for earning a few grand signing jerseys is ridiculous.

The NFL is not the NBA, you need 2-3 years of college weight training to perform in pro football.

It moves it a little "closer" to proof. The allegation was that it was done in a hotel room. Photo appears to be in a hotel room.

Now comes the image search, to see if we can find a matching picture taken on that date, at some other event (to see if he's wearing the same clothes/arm bands)

Dude's family is rich as hell, the hell he requesting money for knowing the heat that brings. If this turns out true, that is.
