True but here is where the NCAA and the NFL/NBA are in collusion...The major sport franchises agree to ignore any and all players that don't go first to college for two reasons.
1. If all the best players go straight to the pros, there is no need for major college sports at all except to see the guys who aren't good enough. As a result, they would suffer greatly (which would be fine by me).
2. The pro teams would then need a farm system. This is probably the biggest problem for them...as it is now the NFL and NBA have a free and liable-free farm system. They get all the benefit of the talent and don't have to worry about broken bones and careers. The NCAA benefit from having a strong athletic pool to showcase their product and (best of all) they don't have to share ANY of the profit with the athletes. Free labor.
This arrangement made sense back in the 60's and 70's but the amount of money these schools now make on the backs of the players today is sickening.
My take is that ever player in a major college program (fuck off Water Polo...only programs that make money) should have rights to a certain amount of payment. My solution (above getting a scholarship) would be to see them setup a trust fund to be paid to the student as he leaves the school. Students then would see a portion of the profits deposited into their accounts after every game but none of it could be accessed until they turn pro.
Think about it...Texas actually gets money by selling jerseys with the Kid's name on it and he has NO rights to it...he literally has no right to his name. No matter how you cut it, the system is unfair and needs SERIOUS updating.
There are pro players that make millions of dollars and they are not too rich to sit down and make a couple of grand on the side signing autographs or making a pr appearance.

the thing that pisses me off mostly is that .....
if a smart programmer goes to a school on a full scholarship because he is smart and earned it, then goes on to work in his dorm to make an amazing product that he then sells to a company for 20,000 dollars. He is able to take that money and do with it what he pleases. Why should sports be any different? dude signs some autographs, or like T. Pryor, they get some free tattoos. They arent hurting anyone and they are getting the spoils of being damn good at what they do.
Also people saying that they are getting free schooling. If a player goes to a state school in their state that tuition and boarding is not THAT expensive at all. I work in education and I have seen some compliance issues over a kid that didnt have means to get home from my university for thanksgiving and a coach drove him home. Guess who got in trouble for that? the kid... bullshit if you ask me.
I just think its stupid all around how these kids are treated.

I think college sports would improve their status as pro farm systems if they could compensate players financially. Think about it, the good players are more likely to hold off on the draft if they could at least make some money in college while they improve their skills before going pro. So, it would improve the quality of college sports just by having more skilled players. And yeah, a player can only spend 4 years ( or 5 years with a redshirt ) in this farm league, but if you're not ready for the pros after 5 years then maybe it just isn't going to happen for ya.
I am responding to the bold, his family being rich why would he want to make money signing autographs.

Which makes Manzeil look even dumber. I could understand a kid with limited financial means doing something like this, but that's not his situation.
The kid is entitled and I doubt he or his parents will take any kind of responsibility for this. They'll just blame some one else.

He has already tweeted that he can't wait to leave college station. If he is ineligible for this year, he'll probably head straight to a pro training camp to prepare for next years draft.
Lots of Aggies can't wait to leave cstat.... Why would that be an unusual thing to tweet even for a football player?

This is how I feel. How hard is it to not act like a douche bag for a couple years so that you can make it to the NFL and be the next Tom Brady. It reeks of short shortsightedness and irresponsibility.

He'll make his millions in the NFL if he follows the rules. Though some of the "rules" in the NCAA are pathetic.
For the people wanting players to be paid though, naw sorry. Keep in mind the players are going to school on a full ride scholarship. A lot of them receive "gifts" from "private doners" anyway like cars, etc. The whole thing can be a little shady but if they want a salary they'll have to make it to the NFL.

With every update on this kid I keep thinking "Damn... just keep your head down, go to class, do the work on the field, and (potentially) become a millionaire in the NFL by the time you are 21. Play the cards right, get endorsements, and be set for a long time to come."
Learn from guys like Andrew Luck & RGIII, most recently. You don't have to be 'Johnny America gonna walk little old ladies across the street & rescue cats from trees', but just stay out of trouble for Christ's sake.
Then again, easier said than done, right? I couldn't imagine having that kind of national recognition at that age, not to mention the pressure. It's easy to forget that he's also just a young college kid.
If he keeps this shit up though, teams might pass him early in the draft due to character concerns (this relates to other issues- not signing autographs for money)- not to mention his entire method of play isn't that far removed from Tebow's at this point. He uses his legs more than his arm... and he's not nearly as big & powerful as Tebow, so he can't rely on running over people- especially in the pros. He'll get destroyed. His throwing motion is also really ugly at this point. Even average NFL d-backs will take this kid's lunch money.
The sports media is helping to create a potential monster out of this kid... and he's not nearly as likeable as Tim Tebow.
It'll be interesting to see what happens.

There is a debt to somebody that He didn't pay. They came knocking looking for what he owes, and he didn't do what he was supposed to do. Now, everyone in the media is out to ruin him and put forth a narrative that puts him in the worst light imaginable. (Probably true, but who knows) and they are out to make him pay for not paying back what he owes. I swear, I've seen it so many times.

Eh I don't think they should be paid directly by the schools but they should be able to make money off of their likeness i.e. endorsements, signing autographs for money etc. so long as it doesn't come directly from the schools.

So then they should work collectively to help change the rules, instead of taking the free scholarship worth tens of thousands of dollars and lying and cheating on the side. While it may be nothing to all you guys, I know plenty of people who would be soooo grateful for a free ride at a university like A&M.

the percentage of athletes that make it pro is pretty freaking low. Alot of guys take the scholarship for the free ride with realistic expectations of playing and getting a free degree with no pro dreams.

In order to capitalize on their own skills and talents they need to join this crooked system.
That's the point, we're talking about people who don't get a choice on what they can do with their own skills. This is insane. Imagine if a hotshot programmer out of high school (a Carmack type) couldn't work until he went to college, except college was spent making programs for the school that grossed tens of millions of dollars of revenue.
It is insane.
Great for them, they should still be allowed to negotiate with schools to see what gives them the best offer. As it is now, they get a 1-year scholarship with X, Y, and Z paid for, take it or leave it. Why can't those guys go around to different schools and ask for, say, a 4 year guaranteed scholarship?
Scholarships are not guaranteed only the best might get one coming in as a freshmen, and next season they can take it away for whatever reason.
If the NCAA cared about the student athlete the scholarships would be guaranteed as long as players are on the team.

Johnny made a big mistake. He should have signed all those items and given the check straight to his university. That is who truly deserves that money. They are the ones paying for his schooling, his books, his housing, his food, and they are providing him a crowd of millions every week in the fall to play in front of. How dare he do this, doesnt he know that he has a FREE ride? What more does he need? Just another selfish, entitled athlete that cannot see the big picture.
The big deal now is he allegedly signed autographs at least once for a large sum of money from the autograph broker.
