I never expected the final scene of the episode to happen so soon, 7 more episodes and that's already happened? Fuck, this is gonna be a wild ride.

Holy shit. That could have been the season finale of any other show. Also i laughed when the people watching it with me who usually hate skyler were cheering for her when she told lydia off.

- Onion A|V Club's For Our Consideration Feature: The case against Breaking Bad

I don't think the broader part of the article is all that off. As Tom Scharpling said some time ago, Breaking Bad has more in common with Sons of Anarchy than Sopranos/Wire. Breaking Bad has a vein of pulp-y, ridiculous trash that runs through it, and tends to bring it down a notch . That stuff is kind of a crowd-pleaser, but is undeniably kinda stupid.

While I think Tom and Mike are right (or were until last night's episode), the article's assessment that it lacks humanism is so far off, it might as well be living behind the Lady Foot Locker in Newbridge Commons.

"Tread lightly" ranks up with some of the best show closing moments I can think of. I remember having a similar reaction to "Not Penny's boat."

Fuck, that was intense. Skyler kicked ass for once and the final scene between Hank and Walt was just unreal. The rest of this season is going to be amazing.

There's plenty to argue about in the details, yes. I just think the show veers towards the ridiculous a bit more often than people like to admit or acknowledge. To say that means it totally lacks humanism is a bit much. Fairer to say that they often forget about humanism is service of humor or pulp appeal.

Now that I think back, I actually skipped over a lot of the Breaking Bad discussion on The Best Show, since I wasn't caught up watching BB at the time. Damn -- wish I could remember what episode they really talked about it. In 4-5 years of listening it's the only thing I ever missed.

Calling it here, badger's trek script is a foreshadowing device. The "cleaner" guy creates a new version of Walt, "killing" his old life, like the transporter device. Walt Jr. then starts a breakfast bakery making blueberry pies after Walt leaves. Jesse breaks even badder and kills Walt Jr and Sky Sky, walt gets a big gun and Ricin to declare all out war on Jesse. Hank goes crazy and joins Walt. Marie dies from being tazed by a mall security guard after stealing from the mall. Gus comes back during a The Walking Dead crossover.

Folks, linking to illegal streams is a no-no on GAF. Protect yourself and take it to PM if you're going to suggest that sort of thing.

In your mind, does it lose points for the pulpy content or the execution thereof? Curious what your take is on this.

Tangentially related, we were having a discussion in the Strike Back thread about the phrase "better than it needs to be" being thrown around these days, and how it devalues certain genres and styles. At a certain point, does the genre and style ultimately limit what you're capable of doing on a television show? I'm more interested in execution - I don't much care as much about what you're doing, just commit to it and do it well.

Sure, but it was still hidden on top of his toilet now. The way the scene played out was completely intuition it was set up for Cancer vomiting not book reading. He connected Hank being "sick" with the unexpected poop and checked to see if the book was gone. I'm just not convened it was a completely natural connection. I guess you could write it off as Hank has a horrible poker face. I don't know. It's not that big of a deal tbh.

I'm way late on this but what? Walt simply saw the book was missing and then after ruling out all other possibilities, thought it was hank who took it. He then finds a damn tracker on his car. Not hard to connect the dots from there.

Great episode. The one thing that totally caught me off guard is when Walt turns around and confronts Hank about the tracking device. Such a "Oh shit! Shit's gonna hit the fan now..." and boy did it.

Walt's oblivious to the friendship destroyed and betrayal Hank feels, plus a side of 'You made an ass out of me...'.

This should be fun tonight:

It aired in Australia already so I streamed it online, it really isn't a good episode. I don't want to spoil it for you but most of the things they do are not accurate.

Walt knew that Hank was close to connecting the dots a few times in the past, especially during the Gus Fring days.

i think this has some valid points tbh

especially wrt to skyler

It does but the BB hype train is at full steam right now. I love the show but it's a tier below The Wire, The Shield, and Mad Men for me and while I don't agree with all of the article's points, I do agree with its conclusion. I'm not sure why you'd publish that piece right now though, other than as a snotty response to all the buzz. Just wait for the show to end and then dissect it as a whole.

That Star Trek talk was boss, yo.

Like seriously, the whole teleporting and making a new copy bit? Have people actually thought that cause as a mild Star Trek fan I was kind of amazed at that theory

Spoiler Alert: @BreakingBad_AMC final season begins with a skateboarding scene, as all epic series should.

lololol

I don't think that AV|Club article has any valid points. I don't care what anyone says, I think plot-driven shows and "far less serious-minded shows" are some of the best TV shows ever produced. I don't think TV shows need "realism" to be considered great, they just need to tell enjoyable stories every week (which is something "Breaking Bad" has done flawlessly).

Tread Lightly went straight to the hall of fame along with I Am the one who knocks and Say my name.

No.

Tread lightly is a much, much better line than either of those. "Say my name" never really meant anything to me. It was like asking asking the Meth Dealer for a handjob. And "I am the one who knocks" sounds awesome out of context, but at the time didn't really play.

"Tread lightly" gave me chills, however.

The only pulp stuff in BB that I thought was too much was Gus fixing his tie. That's still incredibly dumb to me and not cool/interesting. Sure there are other moments that aren't realistic but nothing too extreme.

I don't like the stoner characters, maybe I'm in the minority, I was just annoyed that they were wasting precious screen time on some comedic bs.

I also still don't like Skylar and never will.

I don't know. It's like when your grandma says something vaguely racist at the dinner table. You probably won't love her less for it, but it's embarrassing at the same time. I don't think it's ever really gotten in the way of the show getting its stories across.

I think I'd certainly like Breaking Bad as much or better without those elements though. I suppose it only gets to me when the show is hailed as good or better than programs that didn't ever resort to off-the-wall pulp or gross-out slapstick.

This scene was awesome, it is something that literally no other tv show can accomplish. I absolutely loved it.
