New 3DS System Update (StreetPass Relay Feature)

Is that wired or wireless? Also, since when does google list anonymous viewers as bears and chipmunks?

Well, you obviously need a wireless adapter to set up a wireless hotspot. :V

But as for keeping your computer connected while you are doing that, you can use both a wired or wireless connection.

And they do that ever since the last big Drive update.

Gah so close! I set up the Virtual Router thing and had it all done and ready (or so I thought) then the 3DS found the network but couldn't connect (VR said couldn't get IP address etc from host or something).

Anyway, I go disable security in my wireless router and now the 3DS connects to attwifi (the VR) fine and everything 'seemed' ok.

But no StreetPasses yet. :( Its been like 15min. I dunno if its actually working and I just haven't got one yet or I did something wrong lol.

You did the
macshift -i "Wireless Network Connection" 4e454f474146
in a command prompt?

You did the in a command prompt?

Hmmmm that could be where I'm going wrong, my wireless connection on the map thing is called "Wireless Network Connection - belkin54g"

How would I put that into the command prompt part? I tried putting it exactly but it said it couldn't find something called that, then when I just put "Wireless Network Connection" it said done.

bah.. I've got two cellphones but one can't have it's mac address changed and one isn't rootable. I've got a wireless adapter but even though I can set it up fine I can't actually connect to the access point it creates. My router doesn't let the internal network mac address be changed.

One more thing to try..

Are you making sure you are sharing the internet connection (from an Ethernet cable) with the wireless adaptor (unless you're on Windows 7 starter in which case no can do...),

hmm it seems I dont have a drop down box in Network Map. Windows 7 user here, any suggestion?

You can also find it in "Change adapter settings.

So I've been using a wired connection + wireless adapter, but that means my roommate doesn't get internet while i do that. Can my wireless adapter handle both? I havent tried it. Virtual router gives me the option to use wireless. Do i need two wireless dongles?

The Windows 7/8 method also works for me. Not the one with the Virtual Router Manager program, but the one where you execute it through the cmd prompt. Also, the script for it works as well for me. Downside is that the script won't restart the virtual router you created automatically. Needs to be done by reentering the command "netsh wlan start hostednetwork" everytime the MAC address switches.

I suppose it's just a matter of time before someone could make that work.

Wireless adapter + dongle is only required if you go all wireless. If you just have either a wireless adapter (built into most laptops) or a dongle you'll have to use a wired connection. You also don't need the virtual router program. Here's what I came up with, mixing methods a bit. Use this method to set things up (not sure if I can link to GBA temp, so I'll just quote what the guy instructed):

=>If you are using [A. a computer with built-in wireless network card]

First, change your MAC
1.open [Device Manager]
2.find your wireless network card under [Network adapters], and double click on it
3.click [Advanced] tab
4.select something like [Network Address] or [Locally Administered Address] in [Property]
section
5.select [Value:] and enter the MAC address you want ([Not Present] is the default)
6.press [OK]

Then, create a hosted network
1.
WIN7: press [Start], enter [cmd] and hit [Enter], right click on [cmd] and select [Run as
asministrator]
WIN8: open [charm bar], press [Search], enter [cmd], right click on [cmd] and select [Run as
asministrator]
2.input [netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=attwifi key=password](change "password"
to any passwork you want)
3.input [netsh wlan start hostednetwork]
(*you can input [netsh wlan stop hostednetwork] to turn off the hostednetwork)
(*you can input [netsh wlan show hostednetwork] to show the configure)
4.go to [Control Panel]=>([Network and Internet]=>)[Network and Sharing Center]
5.you will see [attwifi] there, it will show [Local Area Connetction*##] after [Connections:]
(## could be any number)
6.find the network which is connected to the Internet, click the words after [Connections:]
to open the status
7.click [Properties], click [Sharing] tab, check [Allow other network users to connect
through this computer's Internet connection], and select [Local Area Connetction*##] (the
connection of the hostednetwork[attwifi]) (maybe you don't need to select because you only
have two connections)
8.press [OK]

Finally, change your 3DS network settings
1.open your 3DS, open [System Settings], click [Internet Settings], search [attwifi] and
enter the passwork
2.close [System Settings]
Last step: turn your 3DS into sleep mode (suggest) and wait for streetpass!
(*you can't use nintendo zone app because your are using an AP with encryption)
(*your hosted network will stop automatically whenever you change your MAC)

After you've done that:

1. Download the script from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/3j7w7485ac5tdg1/MAC_Cycle_-_V2.zip
2. Unzip and put the macshift files in the root of C (basically just the C folder). Could also put all the files there
3. Run MAC Cycle, follow instructions.
4. Once the timer starts running, open cmd prompt (as administrator). Enter the following:
Netsh wlan start hostednetwork
5.Close 3DS, wait for green light to pop up. Can also be done with 3DS open, but the green light will only blink for seconds before disappearing again. Should take a few minutes at most, but can also take less than a minute.

Now you just need to repeat step 4 every time the MAC address changes. Optional is that you can open your 3DS every time there's a green light to confirm you got something (you may not get something every time). Let's hope a new verson of the script will pop up soon that removes the need to repeat step 4 (and possibly 5) constantly. And as you can read in the quote... you won't be able to connect to Nintendo Zone, but you should still be able to get Streetpasses.

I'm amazed no one has made an Android app for this, or at least made an auto-one-click script on the Android App Tether app for this.

I think I have my method secured for HomePass Relay. I'm still trying to decide if this is worth my time. It's gonna be a royal pain each time I want to execute it. Maybe I'll just keep swinging by the Starbucks on my way to work instead. Is it OK if I post that MAC address and we dedicate it to the tiniest subset of GAF: Monster Hunter 3DS GAF.

Just make sure that if you only ever use one MAC, it's the NeoGAF MAC. I've now got a good selection of GAFfers in my plaza from far off locations that I would have never ever met otherwise!

Can it work with the 3DS open?

When I close the lid the peer connected to the Virtual Router list almost always vanishes. Not sure if this is correct or not.

Give it a minute and the peer connected to Virtual Router will return after you've closed the lid. I do it with mine closed so I can see when the light is green, then open and close it again to wipe the light and move on.

Lol, so you were both spamming. I felt bad yesterday, because I spammed to get the 100 tags in 1 day achievement, but the most I've tagged one person over the Internet is 7 times so far.
I'm working on this right now, where did you find so many working MACs?

Can anyone give any advice on why my GF can't connect to a Nintendo Zone at all?

She always gets a long wait and an error message. Before selecting the NZ app she has full bars on Streetpass, but once she opens the app she loses all bars (they all go grey) until she goes back to the home menu following another unsuccessful attempt.

I've only managed to connect twice myself, but also usually end up just staring at an error message.

Streetpass, Spotpass and Internet (at home) all work perfectly fine.

We're stumped.

On the Virtual Router log sometimes the 3DS just wont connect! Just keeps saying can't find host, can't find IP address.

Have no idea how I got my first two 3DS's to connect, they just.... did.

This third one refuses to connect!

Using the NeoGAF MAC address: 4e:45:4f:47:41:46

I've been doing this using my MacBook Pro & Galaxy S3 Android phone - very easy - if you see SS4Rob, enjoy the pink pieces, and share some of yours! ^_^

You do not need to use the app at all. Does it show any bars on internet when near the Nintendo Zone? (streetpass and internet should alternate)

Also I think 3DS is kind of daft as in I think it queues that "there is a Nintendo zone near message" as soon you pass range of one but does remove it when you are out of range of one. So you open a 3DS out of sleep and see the message.

I can't seem to connect to the NeoGAF MAC address using wireless and the Technitium program, says failed to change MAC address set the first octet of MAC address as '02' and try again.

Sorry if its been addressed already.

yeah. It all works fine I can see the network and everything, but anything I try to connect to the wireless (my phone, my ds, whatever) it just tries to connect and then fails. I think there's something wrong with the dongle I'm using.

Anyone have problems with the internet connection sharing method on OSX? Can connect to Nintendo Zone, ifconfig is telling me I've spoofed the mac correctly though I'm not getting any streetpass & "Wi-Fi- Address:" still shows my real mac address in prefs - network - wifi - advanced.

Your adapter might not support changing the MAC address. I've managed to get past that with MacShift. Try that.

I actually got it to work on a laptop connected only through Wi-Fi. Here's the post I made at GBATemp detailing my method:

http://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-have-a-homemade-streetpass-relay.352645/page-12#post-4740082

It worked for me and a couple of others, but not for everyone. Apparently it has to do with the chip in your computer.

I followed the instructions yet when I try to start the Virtual Router it says "the group or resource is not in the correct state." Any idea what the problem is?

Well, originally there were all the 40:53:50:4F:4F: ones that people were using from :40 to :4F and :50 to :59. Then a bunch of people were using 42:53:50:4F:4F: from :46 to :4A and :50 to :56 because of Windows issues, and then they settled on 4E:53:50:4F:4F: from :40 to :4F. A lot of people still use the old ones just because they always know there's a tag waiting in the relay. Plus, there are all the miscellaneous and NYC attwifi ones listed in the google spreadsheet too. And then we have the Neogaf MAC. You only need 34 MAC addresses since you can easily tag them all 3 times within 1 day, so it's pretty easy to get the achievement as long as you have the better part of a day free to work on tagging and playing through the games over and over.

Which range is the Neogaf MAC?

EDIT: Nevermind, Apparently I skimmed over it.

I followed your instructions but Virtual Router Manager gives me an error saying "The service cannot accept control messages at this time." My 3DS can see the attwifi hotspot but it can't connect to it. What does that mean?

EDIT: Tried it again like you said and it works now. Thanks for the instructions! Got my first StreetPass using the GAF MAC. Who is sting from Nevada?

Last time we tried we were sitting in McDonalds. The NZ app was flashing, and she wanted to try and finally get a piece of the NZ exclusive Animal Crossing furniture. Nothing we did could get the damn thing to connect.

It's been like this at every NZ we've ever tried at. Occasionally on the home menu it shows her as being connected to the internet, but as soon as she starts the NZ app, or (in the most recent cases) Animal Crossing, all the bars turn grey. It's as if having anything running bar the Home menu kills the connection.

Just to be clear, if I do this, I can still concurrently use my laptops wifi to browse the 'net, right? Or at least toggle through it easily?

I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks.

I'm having trouble. My 3DS just won't connect to my laptop. Everything else seems to be in order though.

EDIT: It finds the access point, will deny you if the password is wrong and all but it won't connect. Before it would linger for like a full minute trying to connect and would show up in virtual router manager as a peer connected, but now it says it could not connect faster.

I've never been able to launch the Nintendo Zone app and do anything. I can see that I'm in a Nintendo Zone from the 3DS menu because the icon flashes blue and there's a notice on the bottom of the screen, but all I ever receive is an error message when I launch the program and try to connect. It feels like the icon is just more of an indicator that you're in the zone rather then an actual, usable program.

I've noticed that at one of my local McDonalds, I can detect the Nintendo Zone from way out in the parking lot, but nothing actually would transfer until I was inside the building. Another time I was at a store next to a different McDonalds and could detect the zone, but no transfer happened.

At least around in my area, it hasn't been that impressive. Or all of our zones are busted :D

I have read that people have been able to get pieces for the Chibi Robo puzzle. Is that only for people with Japanese 3DSes? I have tagged a few Japanese people and I am only seeing the normal puzzles I have been seeing.

on my box attwifi has 'Wireless Connection 2' under it, not 'Local Area Connection'.

Clicking on the internet (which is lan) connected one, I don't get Local area Connection as an option.

Help? I can go back to doing it the old way, but i like this automated way better.
