New 3DS System Update (StreetPass Relay Feature)

I'd prefer not to mess with my router at all if possible.

Do I change the MAC of my laptops Wireless Area Connection, and then connect my 3DS to the internet using the ad-hoc I set up on my laptop?

Yes.

A problem I'm encountering is that I can create a network, but I can't see it at all. But if I try to recreate it, it says a network with that name already exists and it asks if I want to take over those settings or change the name.

I looked everywhere in my network menus and whatnot and they're nowhere to be found. I'm using Windows 8, by the way. It only lists active wireless connections and there's no options to show the networks I just created -__-

Also, sadly none of the MAC changing apps I foud for my phone (Samsung Galaxy S2) seem to work. And yes, it's rooted with all of the necessary things on it. I'd prefer to use my phone, but both methods don't work. My phone is setup to do wireless tethering just fine with attwifi (I experimented with creating a hotspot before for my 3DS, simply because I was curious if it could work). So all I need to do is be able to change the MAC address for it.

Well, I'm not sure how it is in Windows 8, but you can always try the netsh command in cmd to do it.

That's an excellent idea and a nice tutorial, but it's useless for relay StreetPass because Windows doesn't let you change the MAC address to the ones in the spreadsheet :(

Yea, that's why I said that some compatible MACs must be decided upon.

I'm a little lost.. but if I set this up, I'm basically streetpassing with whoever else has this set up (i.e. using the same spoofed mac address?) even if they are like halfway across the world?

Okay, so I've changed my Wireless Area Network to a MAC that should work (well, I had to change the first part to 02), and I have managed to get another laptop to connect to the internet using my hotspot.

The problem I have now is that my 3DS doesn't want to connect to the internet using the hotspot. It can see the hotspot, but once it tries to connect it gives me Error Code: 003-1101. Anyone have any ideas?

Did any UK people here get the new panels for Puzzle Swap? Apparently there are new one with the lastest update, including a Xenoblade one! But for some reason it doesnt show up in my panel list... I need that Xenoblade panel in my life >_<

Well, I have some more luck no with the phone. A program 'supposedly' seems to work (Mac Address Ghost). But I don't seem to get a streetpass after turning my phone into a hotspot. It's only a temporary change with that app and when I use it, the tethering functionality is automatically turned off. Which means that if I use it before turning it into a hotspot, it may juust use the original MAC address.

No luck with laptop yet though.

That's one of the best DD-WRT Routers around. The DD-WRT Project has been stagnant for a while (It's all about Tomato now), and newer routers support were added by the community. I'd say the core DD-WRT project done goofed when they started offering a commercial version of it (which hasn't gotten an update since forever either).

As a router, The GL is a great: It has enough flash storage and RAM to handle the most featured version of DD-WRT. It will struggle on faster than 50mbit internet connections, requiring a small overclock (which you can do through the DD-WRT admin interface easily as selecting a CPU Frequency on a Dropdown Combo Box) and it's only 100mbit (no gigabit lan), but does it's job. And it's amazing with DD-WRT because it allows you to do a myriad of things, like WiFi AP repeater, OpenVPN gateways and all kinds of nice hacky stuff like, for instance, this exploit. It's a great tool to have around.
I also bought a WRT54GL for this.
Which version of DD-WRT would you recommend?

Also someone over at GBAtemp wrote a script for DD-WRT routers to automatically cycle through MAC adresses:

Just tried Mac Address Ghost on my Android Phone, the 3DS is seeing a Nintendo Zone but yet to see the streetpass light. Gonna give it a few minutes and see what happens

Those panels were rolled out a couple of weeks ago.

Latest one is Mario and Luigi, I believe.

You don't get the puzzle automatically with the update, you have to Streetpass somebody who has the puzzle to get your first panel.

Urg, still no luck getting it to work. I spent ages dicking around with an old broken Vista laptop, and that Nintendo USB WiFi Adaptor, but couldn't get it to work.

I should be really close to getting it to work with the hotspot I made on my Windows 7 laptop, but my 3DS doesn't want to connect to the hotspot. It can see the hotspot, but once it tries to connect it gives me Error Code: 003-1101. Anyone have any ideas? Does anyone know how to get it to connect?

Okay I think it's pretty much certain none of these methods work on an Android phone that hasn't been rooted. Spent a few hours playing with every combo possible and at best I manage to activate the nintendo zone - but it simply does not get the streetpass data from that mac location at all, it won't even let you get the US Nintendo Zone items so...

Turn off WLAN security on your router.

I dug my DDWRT router out and I can't get this thing to give me tags. I am able to connect to Nintendo Zone just fine, but I can't get SP tags. Any ideas?

EDIT: I ran InSSIDer and I'm showing it has the right MAC address.

I was thinking of picking up one of those WRT54GL routers to use specifically as a street pass relay, but is there any way to lock it down so only my 3DS can connect to it (don't want people connecting to it since IIRC doing this requires no security on the wireless)?

I assume I would modify the filtering on the router so it only lets the MAC address of my 3DS connect?

That is correct. You can lock it down to a MAC address.

Tried again this morning.
I can get it to work only once.
Rooted Android phone, tethering using first MAC address, 3DS gets a streetpass, change to second/third/etc. MAC, wait ~25 minutes for each, no passes.

Using the same phone and SSID shouldn't affect it, right? As longs as it's using a different MAC each time. Unless there is a specific cooldown period to make a relay (even with different relay stations/Nintendo Zones/MACs).

Anyone has succeeded getting several streetpasses consecutively using WiFi Tether? I have no problem connecting the Nintendo Zone app.

For those of you having issues...

If your 3DS is already connect to wifi in your house (or elsewhere) it seems that it will not pick up a street pass through relay, or at least mine won't. Make it forget that network or change the ssid so that it'll only be connected to your fake street pass relay.

What about doing auto changes to the mac address, can you do that with a router, or do you need to use the Linux option?

You'll need to use something like DD-WRT or Tomato to do that. Theoretically, I believe with both you could probably write a script that would cycle macs every 8 hours.

Which one did you get?

Pikced up wrt54gl for $15 on craigslist

I also bought a WRT54GL for this.

Which one do I use?

Also, I'm sure I got new StreetPasses on the same Mac within a couple hours of getting the first one. Doesn't seem like it's 8 hour limit?

The wireless stick I have doesn't want to install on my laptop :(

Does anyone know if this would work with my Virgin Superhub? There's an option in the menus to set up a "Guest Network", with it's own SSID. Not sure about MAC address though. Will have to check when I get home.

Damn, I just streetpassed Kretiar from Germany using the Neogaf MAC address. This thing is awesome!

[edit] ok now how does that work, does someone need to streetpass me to get me out of the system so I can streetpass someone else again? Because I haven't streetpassed anymore people.

Wow, I can't get a spoof to work AT ALL.

Got my PC plugged into the router via a cable, so trying to set up its wireless card to be an attwifi hotspot, but gah. Complicated.. All the guides are different.

Downloaded Virtual Router Manager as per this post on GBAtemp. All looked hopeful setting stuff up and then, woops, VRM crashes on open. Back to the drawing board.
