Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | August 2013 | Divekicks & Dragons

idk man, have you played spelunky?

can't wait for the vita version

I have not -- I plan to buy it for Vita on release.
I've watched videos though -- and for me, at least, I don't think I'd lump it in with the whole 2D platformer genre -- it's something else to me. Cause the gameplay there doesn't remind me of SMB3/SMW/Rayman/Sonic/etc.

I rarely play platformer but it is screenshot that make me hooked with the art style and character. Looks really fun to play.

It is really fun to play. It oozes charm too.
There's a bit of a difficulty ramp on some of the later levels, but by then, you should be used to the gameplay and they should be the fun type of challenge. Replay is there too as each level has a time attack challenge. Tons of collectibles and the Vita version runs fantastic/looks fantastic and actually uses the touchscreen in a useful way.

It's a steal for <$7. I owned it on PS3, platinumed it, sold it, bought it on PC during a Steam sale ($15? haven't played it much here), then bought it on Vita, platinumed it, sold it, rebought it digitally for like $12. I think it's THAT good... and I want to convince Ubisoft that the franchise needs to continue in that direction as well as needing to be developed and released on the Vita. :)

i'm not sure where else you could put it.

it's a lot like classic marios, but with more power ups. instead of a costume, you get upgrades that change the basic characteristics of your character.

game is pretty damn hard, but in a good way

I just checked again (which I should had done in te first place)

http://youtu.be/nf37ts-4_MQ
Doa5+ has it.

I think mvc3 just has a cross controller.

I think I'm going to get both. X) they both have an 'easy mode' of sorts so when I get frustrated I can do that. Plus, I feel comfortable playing online with Vita-Gaf.

DoA5+ has cross play but that won't matter much when DoA5 Ultimate is released. And considering it's F2P, it's safe to say almost all of the remaining userbase will probably migrate.

Everyone who still doesn't have it better buy Sound Shapes while it's still on sale. I put the game down ever since finishing the albums last year but just reinstalled it last night and bought the DLC.

I was really bad at platformers when I first got the game but I'm slightly better now so I appreciate the game a lot more. And apparently, Beat School is a lot of fun.

I just pretend that Death Mode doesn't exist.

Eh. I found the game to be a pretty average platformer with a coat of slick presentation.

Hard is good.

It doesn't have... levels... right?
It's not like -- here, beat 1-1, go to 1-2, go to 1-3, in 1-4 you fight a mini boss, in 1-8 you fight a boss, rinse, repeat.... right?
That's the classic 2D "mario" platformer model to me...

The gameplay make it remind me more of like a metroidvania game... though I haven't played it, so that's just based on what I watched of the trailer on the Steam page... go over here, find a puppy, bring it over there, sacrifice it, get a jetpack, fly up to the other corner, find a magic cape, etc.

it does, actually. the caves run from 1-1 to 1-4 (included). The jungle is 2-1, etc.

Metroidvania, to me, is a game with a large map that has you returning to previously cleared areas with a new power to access unexplored portions of that "level". Spelunky is not like that. Once you complete a level, there is no returning to that level in that particular "run".

There are collectables (like the damsels you speak of that net you an extra heart) that you'd have to take to the EXIT to get credit for it.

Also, each level is randomized. Unless you do the daily challenge on the PC, no 2 levels would be identical.

Sony needs to give me some brownie points for this

Overall I prefer the mechanics of Rayman Origins (the best Vita platformer so far) but I think Sound Shapes is a decent purchase, especially while it's on sale. Worth playing through it at least once to experience the music and visuals.

Hey guys! I love DJ MAX Technika Tune so much I reviewed it despite it being out for awhile. I also got tons of freebies that I'm raffling away, including:

Posters signed by the artist and producers
Soundtracks
Free copies of the game
Technika 3 Posters
Platinum Member Cards

All you have to do is check out my review and comment on it with what you think of the review and the franchise itself.

No, it's definitely not a Metroidvania. It's somewhere between Mario and Ghouls n Ghosts. You run, jump, collect but it's something of a slower pace because if you fly through a la Mario or Sonic you'll be toast quick. You have to read the environment for obstacles that might not seem like obstacles on first glance. It's addictive as hell. So well designed.

I liked your review (just read it). Quite informative and actually explained what the game was about and a bit about the music selection, which is what I was interested in.

I would've commented on your site but didnt want to register with disqus. Sry

Only critique I could give is maybe include some bold headers to differentiate the different parts of your review. Makes it easier to read imo.

its really a mix of speed and caution. go too slow and death will show up. go too fast and you're bound to make a dumb mistake and wind up dead

We talking about Rayman Origins still? That game can be really hard at times but the checkpoint system is so balanced that I've yet to get angry at the game. Plus the controls are super tight and if you make a mistake you'll usually get it right the second time due to precision.

No, Spelunky

I personally don't care for Rayman

Hard to tell since I'm still waiting for Vita release... :)

However, this is more of what I was thinking -- the old Wizards & Warriors games somehow came to mind in a sense... or even Terraria in a way -- where you have to carefully get to that object over there for some reason before moving on...

Game looks fantastic, I'm hyped for it to release on Vita...
I was just trying to say that, for me, it didn't look to be in the same genre as classic 2D platforming like Rayman/Mario/Sonic/etc.

This is cool of you to do! I'll be sure to leave a comment (I love DJ MAX Technika Tune as well, excellent game to play on the go)

I probably should've posted how we're packaging things together as prizes too, that's here. The devs have been super cool to us and I think that's a testament to how awesome this game is haha.

Hrmmm, today's sale dropped SFxT (moved to next week) and added Sumioni at not too great of a discount.

No thanks, I'll wait for plus on that.

I don't think there's anything except maybe Totori+ for me... but I'm not even sold on that.

Do u own /are not interested in any of those games fromthe jap dev sale?

How is Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time?

It's about €12 in this PSN sale, worth it?

I paid full price for the retail release and I really liked it. Kept my attention for sure, which is rare. A common complaint is that it seems light and short, but the way I played was trying to find every hidden wine bottle and treasure in each time period before moving on. When I'd get tired of searching, I'd do some story missions, repeat etc so it lasted awhile for me and felt just right.

From what I've seen, the only difference between the PS3 & Vita version is PS3's Jet Set/Okami-style cel shading, and Vita's traditional textures. Looked fine to me, ran fine.

I hope they do another, or get a crack at one of Sony's other platformers. This is the first Sly game I played and now I really hope that Sly Cooper Trilogy comes out as planned.

BUY TOTORI GOD DAMNIT

I'm thinking about it...

Do u own /are not interested in any of those games fromthe jap dev sale?

Soul Sacrifice - Own; platinumed.
Gravity Rush - Own; platinumed.
Street Fighter X Tekken - Own.
*Sumioni: Demon Arts - $7.50 is too much for this.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus - Technical issues abound, I'll wait for PS+
Guilty Gear Accent XX Core + R - No online, 4:3, etc. No thanks.
Atelier Totori Plus - Thinking about it.
Silent Hill Book of Memories - Own, completed.
Touch My Katamari - Own, completed.
Ridge Racer - Not into racers, hear bad things about the "core" game.

Definitely mixed signals on Totori Plus:
