Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

So did they gut an Oculus for the tech and strapped two screens into it or did they come up with their own system? This doesn't have a gyro in it either so it seems identical apart from the screens.

Two separate screens, fresnal lenses, much wider FOV. It's very much different, and Palmer himself thought it was cool(post on mtbs3d).

Competition is always good. That being said, I really cannot wait for the consumer Rift. It will be a world changer.

Another heads up! Dream just got an Early Access release on Steam and will have OR support. Game looks pretty gorgeous!

good that i bought Dream for 5$ months ago ;)

The 30-45min of gameplay of the Alpha were awesome, this game could be really great with Oculus Rift.

Where did you find it for $5?

Nope it's still not been implemented. I am going to wait.
Oh I thought it was already in the alpha. D: I'll wait then.

@Digg - Not yet, but soon. We're waiting on an update from oculus team to fix bugs thats makes it unplayable at the moment.
I don't know the details, but this is what I found.

Motion sickness has been defeated!

I tried taking a ginger pill a few weeks ago, and it didn't help. However- I didn't realize you were supposed to take the pill and wait an hour.

I did that today, and just got done with an hour and a half Minecrift session with zero motion sickness!

So, if you get sick, definitely get some ginger pills. They are a VR wonder drug.

Is there an elegant solution for getting rid of the dust, i.e. for cleaning
the screen without too much hassle? What other methods are there?

I ordered one last week, so I guess I should expect to get mine around Christmas??

Much earlier than that, I'm sure. Turnaround seems to have shortened to around a little more than a month. I ordered mine two weeks ago and I'm expecting it to get here early September.

Considering getting the dev kit. I don't know if I'll ever release a game using it but I'm tempted to play around with the API.

Is the consumer edition going to be drastically different? So much so that I'd regret buying the dev kit?

Do menus work in Minecrift? They are broken in every other 3D mod (crafting table etc.).

From everything I have read you would not regret spending the money on a dev kit. Mine is arriving Monday so I may have more info for you then.

Does anyone know what the plans are for consumer model updates? Do you think they will go with yearly updates like Apple?

They re-did everything in the mod. All the menus, crafting, etc are windows that float out in front of you. It's a little tough to read the text, but if you know what you're doing they work great.

Just ordered mine. How long was your wait?

Is there still long wait times between 'order' to 'ship'?

Their website says that orders placed now will ship in Sept. I'm not sure how long that message has been up there though.

Alright, mine should be here in the morning
huzzah
. What's the best collection of things to download? Figure I'll do it tonight to be ready.

And I ordered my Rift on July 8th and it's arriving August 16th.

One bump before bed.

Also, is there anything needed to play Half-Life 2 and Mirror's Edge? I know the former got a steam update but the latter was just a mod right? What other big games feature Rift support?

I'm on the verge of buying one, but I'm worried they'll announce a second dev kit because of that one picture. Also, I was still considering wasting $300 on a new 360; it's a toss-up on which is the better mileage for $300. And I don't even know if my computer is good enough to make great use of it right now (i5-2500k, Radeon HD 6870, 8GB RAM).

What was the recommended GPU upgrade for an i5-2500K? I assume I'll have to upgrade from my 550W power supply, but if possible I'd rather not have to change from the stock CPU fan.

I've finally had the opportunity to test the Oculus Rift thanks to a friend who bought a dev kit.

This is the future. Despite the low resolution, the 3D effect is there, it's mindblowing and it shits all over what's been done in cinema or video games before. Despite the blocky models from the demos and the blurry textures, you really feel like you can touch everything. Also, aiming is easier than it's ever been, even with a mouse and keyboard.

Unfortunately it's far from being ready. There are lots of technical and commercial issues to sort out but the core technology is there and it works.

I've found this demo to be the most impressive one:

I also tried this and it wasn't as scary as reaction videos made me think:

By the way, Half-Life 2 made me feel sick as quickly as the non-Rift version, if not quicker. Still hate that game.

How much of the rift's screen should fill my vision? With the C cups I can see the tubing and the size of the screen is almost like looking through a spy glass.

About to set up Mirror's Edge, exciting!

I ordered mine on July 9th. It seems that they are really getting on top of the orders. It was exactly a month from when I ordered until it went in processing. That is just a coincidence though.

I think youll probably be fine. Everything that I have heard suggests there wont be a dev kit 2 so just jump in if you want to and then wait for the consumer one that will come out next year.

Enjoy. Mirror's Edge is incredible on the Rift. I played through the whole game that way and loved every minute of it

I say that but the picture seems to be cropped on the rift, menus are cut off despite showing up find in the split view on the tv. Does Mirror's Edge not like downsampling? I have the resolution for the game set to 1080P

Also: My hand shadows are glitching.

What version of Perception did you use? When I tried it, it was incredibly broken, and I think the only way to get it working was to go back to an old version that did the split rendering of frames instead of simultaneous (and I think the framerate and/or lag may have still been horrible). They're supposed to eventually release a version that renders both eyes simultaneously and that might work with Mirror's Edge.

Questions above still stand.

One more, should I be having the displays cloned or extended in Nvidia Control panel? Extended made it so I couldn't use the OS very well on the actual tv as in things wouldn't pull up, task bar tabs gone, etc. Switching back fixed it.

Edit: But yeah, as of right now Mirror's Edge can be weird. The shadows and some random light effects are doubled and the menus become giant.

My exact reaction when I tried it yesterday. Dude, have you tried that Necropolis demo? Aiming with your head feels so much precise than a mouse. I couldn't believe it, those poor bots didn't stand a chance.

I personally prefer extended because with cloned I get pretty bad screen tearing in UDK demos like the rollercoaster or Necropolis. With extended, it works perfectly.

TF2/HL2 aren't working at all, the images don't combine. All so confusing!

Edit: And I'm still a bit confused about the adjustment. With an A lens I should have it all the way out right? What about when I take my glasses off an use the C ones?

So, about 8 friends came to my house yesterday and it was one of the funniest days of my life.

They have all been playing videogames since the Atari 2600 so I didn't expect much of a reaction, but everyone was absolute stunned about this thing, they couldn't believe what they were seeing.

The first one was the obligatory Rift Coaster, standing up of course. 3 of them fell to the floor while laughing like some crazy lunatic, another almost smashed my monitor, and there was one that couldn't take it more that 30 seconds because he suffers from severe vertigo (he has difficulty to even go up in an escalator).

Man, you could see it in their eyes, they were 8 years old again going to an amusement park for the first time.

Shadows don't always work and you only see part of what's on your monitor in the rift

You have to enable beta mode for HL2 and type "-vr" in the parameters under properties for both. Don't use glasses in the rift. Use contacts with A lenses and nothing with C lenses.

Great story. I wish everyone could experience this. Soon!

Yeah, I got Half Life 2 working yesterday, not sure what was up. Managed to fix it though. C lens are what I've switched to, hate contacts so A lens are out of the question without glasses. The C seem to not work as well as A with glasses but oh well.

With the C lenses on, what should I have the rift extended to via the switches on the side?

One more question: I haven't figured out how to get Dishonored working via the perception drivers, it starts with the rift and everything but heavy ghosting is everywhere as are doubles. Only game where I've had that issue.
