Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Is there a roller coaster demo where you tilt with the track? That's my biggest problem with rift coaster - if you don't follow the view with your head, you're just a disembodied camera flying sideways around a track. Several people I demoed it with broke the 'big drop' illusion by simply not looking down.
 
When is the consumer version expected to be out (other than sometime in 2014) ? And can it be pre-ordered yet?

Nevermind, read the post above. I think I'll wait but this will surely be what brings me into PC gaming. I can save up in 2014.

a half year ago there was one slide mention the Consumer Version for q3 2014 (July-September)

We have NOTHING more, it could be still the plan, it could be not. No one knows it.
 
I ordered mine July 14th, but I assumed that they were going to start manufacturing them at a faster rate or something. It's still at ready, so I'm just going to say that I won't get mine until September or October! I've never tried Half Life, Minecraft, or Skyrim, so I'd really love to experience those games first hand with the Oculus, I just don't know if I'll be able to hold out any longer.
 
WOOT! What's the chances of that! I just got an email saying my Rift will being moving to processing soon! Hahah, feels great man. I'm in the 60xxx range.
 
God, I think I missed out on this batch by only a few hundred order #s... I'm going to go ahead and cry myself to sleep tonight.
 
This was just Greenlit on Steam and has Rift support. Haven't heard of this until now but it looks really intense!

Definitely going to grab one of these, just a shame it'll be a while before they ship I imagine. A month for the kickstarter, several months for them to be made, hopefully by early 2014?

yeahe, it will take a while till when it comes out, But why rush? Oculus Consumer is still far away.

But the biggest problem sixense has is nobody knows if Oculus come with a own VR Input solution. Oculus has hinted alot of times that they are working on VR Input and i can´t really see a solution for positional headtracking which would not open the gate for motion controllers at the same time.

And just because my rift is coming in now and I was planning on buying a Hydra with it but given that the new version is coming out I don't really want to do that.
 
Hey guys, I just posted this week one progress video of my Oculus/Indiecade game jam entry, Elevator Music.

It's a cyberpunk mystery set in a mysterious corporate tower -- you can synchronize with access points to dive into their internal network.

This is a video of the VR-within-VR interface I've been working on for the past few days. The video shows the 3D effect of your gaze on the interface.

Does anyone know how to activate rift support in ETS2? I updated to the latest beta but it won't work and I don't see any options to change it :(

I want to know how to get ETS2 working also. Do you need to update to the latest beta first (and if so how)?

My dev kit was waiting for me when I got home from my holiday!! After trying out a few games/demos, i think the consumer version (HD or not) is quite a way off. I tried the Rift coaster demo first, which I couldnt really enjoy due to excessive bluriness in your peripheral vision, only a small circle in the centre is in focus (still got a vertigo sensation at the first big drop though!). Kinda the same problem with VRtown though not quite as bad.

Proton Pulse is good fun (think Arkanoid from the POV of the paddle!!) and Titans of Space is an excellent on rails-space-information experience. Alone in the Rift was pretty terrifying too, 'proper' horror games are gonna be a blast on this thing.

Half Life 2 works probably better than anything else i've tried thus far, and doesn't have as much of the bluriness I mentioned above - though I had to stop playing after 15 minutes as i genuinely felt like vomiting due to motion sickness.

It will be interesting to see what else comes out for this thing in the near future.

If you have it in steam, rigth click on the game-> properties -> beta tab and select the latest beta there.

1.4.X is supposed to have rift support but I can't make it work :(

That screen just made me wonder if developers will ever put in an option for customization of skin color. It would be weird to look down and see a really pale arm when mine is normally tan. Just something I imagine could take away from complete immersion if a character is supposed to be "you", not a big deal or anything.

Looking forward to mine arriving early next week.

As for when the consumer version will be out, expect Q4 2014 with a price point at or below $150.

I thought the person who got only 1 HDMI cable received less accidentally, hope they starting to cut things out of the package.

So does it ship on the day of processing in people's experience? Would love for it to arrive Tuesday.

Just one hdmi cable and no dvi cable just the hdmi to dvi adapter.

I had 3ft dvi, 3ft USB, 3ft hdmi, 6ft hdmi, dvi>hmdi adapter, power adapters for every region.
 
Thanks for the replies. Guess it's hit or miss if any of the spare cables are still included.

And yeah, the consumer model will probably be 299, of course. And I have paid five times that in the past for much shittier HMDs, so I will gladly buy a couple consumer Rifts.
 
I actually wish they wouldn't target cheap. Having had the DK since the first shipment, I'm convinced this device necessitates the absolute highest quality display available (in every respect, resolution, CR, white balance, color accuracy, gamma, etc...), ridiculously tight factory calibration, and vast improvements in the optical mechanism (e.g. retail unit HAS to have a physical, independent IPD slider and be completely sealed--dust is a bitch). They can't do all that and make money at $300. I would say the best solution is a Basic and Premium model, but I think they're dead set on one SKU.

Assuming their investors are alright with playing the long game, the initial product might be sold at cost to get the product out to as many people as possible and deter competitors who might otherwise try to get the jump on the market while it's young. Profits can come once they're properly established.
 
should we just order now or is there a decent chance a new dev kit will launch soon?

and when are people predicting retail version to be released? 2015 or so?

Where did you hear that 1.4.X has Rift support? I've googled all over the place, and site: searched the ETS2 forums, and I don't see any mention of it...
 
So what hardware should I have to actually get decent mileage out of this thing?

I want to be able to run games at least decently and not with too much aliasing all the while keeping fps in check.

I have a i7 2600k and a AMD HD 5970.

Their current plan is to have the 1080p consumer version out next year (Q3 I believe was on one of their slides from a few months ago).

Personally, I'm just going to wait, as much as it pains me as I keep reading and watching everyone having a blast in various demos. I don't want to have to purchase it twice, games support will be larger by the time consumer version is out, and that should be the version that fixes a lot of the issues with the current kits (from resolution to positional tracking).

On top of that, it also gives more time for third-parties to create accessories for the Rift. Things like the Omni treadmill for example, or the upcoming Sixense wireless controller (they are the company that created the Hydra for Razer, and they're now making their own Hydra-esque product, but wireless thankfully).

But hey, it's your money. If you are just impatient and have disposable income so you don't mind having to buy it twice, go ahead and get one. Not sure what the current shipping timeline is for new orders though.

I don't have a Rift, but you're almost certainly going to want a better GPU, especially once the higher res consumer version releases. Framerate is very critical because if it starts dipping, you could potentially get motion sickness.
 
It's an early build for the VR Jam, but have any of you Rift owners given Time Rifters a shot? It sounds like a cool FPS concept to begin with, and it apparently features good VR HUD and movement examples as well.
 
Order did actually change to processing yesterday(early Monday), hopefully we don't have to wait 9 days for shipment like the first poster of the last page.

They seem pretty enthusiastic about their progress for the consumer model so far. I'm sure they're aware more than anyone of what the faults are in the dev models and would like to release a quality product to the mainstream.

Also gotta realize that this is basically VR's first real go. Cant expect everything to be perfect right away.
