RIP Mitsuru, the nerfs got to her

still gonna use her though

Flux, buddy, do you not want me to have a chance against anyone? :(

Btw anyone who thinks this game is going to stay arcade only is silly

Let's play good marketing, bad marketing!

Bad marketing:
"This is a Japan-only arcade release."

Good marketing!
"We'll be sure to look into a localization as soon as the console version is announced."
(I realize that's the announcement MO for just about no one.)

I didn't really want mitsuru or anybody to be nerfed to the ground. I just want it so that they actually had to think.

Too many top tiers are super derpy. I have to see the yu changes because that one is in the air in terms of "did they fix him?"

That definitely seems to be the case. Because they ended up giving her traps more recovery time (not like people could just hit/izanagi car their way through the traps anyway), gave her reloading more recovery time (while not slow, it wasn't all that fast even in vanilla P4A), and I guess threw her a bone by making Double Fangs an airborne attack too. Too bad that doesn't really fix her poor health and non-SMP shit damage even with crazy IAD combos.

Fuck it, if I can get back into the game, I'm going Yukari.
If what they've done with Naoto sticks, I'm considering doing the same. No SMP loop doesn't bother me as much as making reloads and traps have more recovery on them (pretty much expected a good chance of losing it once Arc knew about it, even if I didn't want her to lose it, but the other two things are a definite problem).

Can't wait to see how the tier list shakes out. I thought the characters were close enough that they would buff the weaker ones as opposed to needing the dominant ones, but I guess they disagree!

they had to nerf the top tier. They are just to derpy. No thought process behind many of their gameplans.

They didn't actually do too many significant changes to the balance.. From what it looks like, it was more dealing with one trick pony setups (Chie, Labrys, Yu to a degree) and removing outright silly damaging combos (Mitsuru, Aigis's double Megido.)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Tier list doesn't change all that much. No idea where Yukari and Junpei will fit in however. What'll determine the tier lists is most likely how the new systems (Shadow characters, SB supers) work with each character.

That all makes sense.

I think tier lists will change. This feels more like a new game than an update. We're getting new characers, new moves, and a huge balance update.

Definitely. If Chie gets hits with the nerf hammer too hard I'm switching.

I definitely think tier lists will change, especially when it comes to the top tier. If anything, I'm hoping this game makes tier differences even less significant than they were before (with the exception of a handful of characters).

There are SO many modifications that there's no way the current metagame and perception of character potential will remain the same. It's exciting stuff.

Wait, so Kanji can still do command grabs without a Persona? How does that work? Does he gain access to new command grabs that don't involve Takemikazuchi?

That's what I'm thinking. He can command grab while Persona broken, but it won't do as much damage or some properties will be lessened since Take-Mikazuchi's not involved. What I'm currently envisioning is the first part of Kanji's command grab without the impalement follow-up.

Story speculation - perhaps Yukari and Junpei are recruiters or lookouts for Mitsuru's group, looking for young people with the potential. Their professions put them in a good spot for that.

Because you actually play the games.
The only people against fighting games updates are those who don't play them, they just bitch for the sake of bitchin' or because they buy games for collection. On the other hand a fighting game update should always offer a DLC option, paying 40$ or more for every update is not the way to go.

It's a tricky balance. I've been on both sides. I thought Super SFIV was an amazing update, was ok w/ UMvC3 due to the amount of new characters and extenuating circumstances, but bailed on the BlazBlue series the way they handled it, and think DOA5U is a joke. It really depends on how into entrenched in the series you are. There are people who play fighters who were turned off by UMvC3, yet stuck w/ BlazBlue and vice versa. I initially saw this thread and thought it was only a balance update plus 2 new characters, which almost turned me away. However it looks like this is more significant, which is ok to me at a lower price point.

I guess what I'm saying is that the userbases for these games are never going to really expand when there's a perception of getting "burned" by taking a risk on a series you're not already committed to, even among fighter fans. That's a problem. I think it's an even bigger issue when things are moving more toward digital purchases with no resell options.

I think I really tend to agree with the latter part of the quoted post. Of all the fighters with updates SF really seems to have nailed the least off-putting method for everyone. I feel like there needs to be some sort of "thank you" to the user who bought a previous version. I don't think there will really be anything like that until next gen when more fighters explore F2Ps.

For example, why not offer a digital upgrade path, even if the "DLC patch" for the new version is essentially a download of the whole "new" game at a slight discount that is kept separate internally but can use the older version to start. Say, just let people download each new version from the original, and patch the original's main menu to allow game selection. Kind of like the Marvel Origins/DS Resurrection selection. No worries about having to retrofit old code, which is always used as a reason for needing a new title. However, Japan hasn't really embraced a digital model, so this seems unlikely.

I am sad about Mitsuru nerfs but she'll be fine in the long run. She just lost her crazy damage and dumb stuff. Naoto's nerfs are looking problematic though.

I can ignore it since it's a fighting game, but I'm starting to worry about Persona 5.

Persona 5 will take place at a girl's only high school dorm where the goofy protagonist somehow ends up being allowed to stay as he studies for his college entrance exams but because of shenanigans has to rescue his dormmates using the power of PERSONA! Can he pass his college entrance exams while wooing the girl of his dreams and at the same time not get kicked out of the dorm by the suspicious resident manager all while trying to save the world from Shadows? Also, magical girls.

It'll sell the most copies of any Atlus game to date.
