The Wonderful 101 Review Thread

Dude, Uncharted 3. Eurogamer.

Nuff said.

Holy shit I never seen this. That comments section, good lord

To be fair though, the game got 10's and recieved the highest praise across the board. People got irrationally angry because it got an 8.

People ITT aren't getting angry at that stupid 3/10 review, no they are angry about the game getting 7's,8's all round. Its ridiculous and total confirmation bias.

At the end of the day reviews mean nothing to your personal enjoyment of a game. Why get so strung up about it?

To be far, though, most people are complaining about two things:

  • Reviewers not being able to draw the shapes when plenty of people had no problem with it and when you don't even need the Gamepad to play the game.
  • Reviewers trying to justify the game being on the Wii U, when this does not happen in other platforms. i. e. people don't review Gears of Wars wondering how it would have played on the PS3 and reducing its score based on the answer for that hypothetical questioning.

I'm saying the exact opposite.

You judge a piece of art (in this case, video games) based on the total package because that is how you experience the video game.

You don't experience gameplay, graphics, sound etc. individually. You experience them all at once. That combination is what you judge the game on.

The individual elements don't matter. All that matters is what happens when you plug them all together.

You don't judge food by its individual ingredients. You don't judge a song by its individual instruments. You judge the package.

Well I'm seeing "gameplay" as the entire package.
As in the graphics, sounds, game design, game mechanics, etc.
How the game plays because those elements.
I could be wrong with the definition.

That said, not every game, for example, needs a story. Thats not where video games come from in their purest form. So I don't see how a game can be docked points for an arbitrary or non-existing story, unless its a story with gameplay elements in it.

Control is also a sticking point. One of the primary skills a gamer needs is to be able to handle the controls. For the most part, we have no idea how good the reviewer
can actually play games. What was their litmus test? Have they shown their skills in tournaments? And sre they dexterous in all the genres? A person who can drive a car cannot automatically know how to pilot a helicopter. Therefore cannot be expected to make a review on how a brand helicopter controls.

The most hilarious outrage is still Twilight Princess 8.8

Whereas you can technically argue about scores in 7-8 range (even though that's obviously a silly thing to get angry about), that 8.8 was objectively a great score, lol

That 8.8 was better than it deserved even. I don't remember that far back particularly but I do believe I might have been amongst those that was pissed off about it.

Oh naive young batbeg...

Oh, this quite sums it up. Should be put in official topic in first post.

And people, stop reading reviews. Just stop. There's a demo of this game, and it's truly fantastic, period.

Thank God I got a chance to play the demo before seeing some of these reviews. I had a totally different experience from some of these reviewers and I can't personally wait to play this game which in no doubt will be considered a cult classic in the future.

Edge gave it a 6??

Reviewer also mentioned control issues

It’s an intriguing system in principle, but not in practice. The GamePad frequently fails to recognise what you’re asking for and it can take several attempts to get right. And while beginning to draw also triggers slow motion, it’s an awkward process often interrupted by an enemy’s attack, requiring you to gather up your stunned team and try again. You’ll soon wish for a simple selection menu or button shortcuts, and we quickly found ourselves defaulting to the easy-to-draw sword morph rather than experiment with our other options during battle. It’s telling, too, that one upgrade you’re able to apply later on makes the line faster to draw with the right stick, which comes off like a tacit apology for requisite GamePad functionality.

Can't be coincidence so many reviewers are having difficulty with the controls

Maybe Blistered Thumbs should wait until they heal.
I mean, seriously? what kind of review is that lol. I think they just played the demo cus they did't even give any details.

LOL

Can't wait for this game to come out!!

As an exclusive, The Wonderful 101 is a real triumph for Nintendo, joining ZombiU and Pikmin 3 in showcasing just how cool a peripheral the GamePad truly is when used right. It might not always work as it should, but when it does it’s something quite extraordinary. The overall presentation is of such high quality, and there’s just so much heart in it, that The Wonderful 101 is an absolute must-buy for Wii U owners.

After playing the demo, I felt that the controls were one of the game's strongest suits.

Are they perfect???

No.

Are they gamebreaking/changing???

Not for me.

I can't agree with these major control issues at all.

A point I DO agree with that has been mentioned in some reviews is the camera and how you get annoyingly hit from some enemies that are off the screen.

I don't know what to make of "I can't draw a circle with the stick" and edge struggling so hard that they are giving up on battle options, it's like the game is unplayable reading this.
I wonder if knowing to draw even if the shapes are simplistic make a difference, because I can't understand this level of struggle having played it.

Now let's not go re-writing history LOL

The "outrage" was because he wrote in the GCN review that the Wii version was superior in every way but scored the GCN version higher anyway. And the way the scores were set up (8.8, which allowed for a higher score for the GCN version but allowed them both to stay sub-9.0) combined with the other bit all screamed clickbait.

In retrospect 8.8 was high even, but to be fair that was at a time that major AAA exclusives scored in the 9.5-9.8 range.

Fortunately no-one cares what Edge thinks. It's irrelevant, out of touch and sells about 4 copies.

Man there is some hate there. Did they kill your puppy or something?

Im an Edge subscriber - it's the best gaming magazine out now. the articles are really well written and interesting.

I knew they would give it a 6.

This guy...

Anyway, don't want to mess up this thread any more. Good thing is that most reviews seem to be fairly good.

also the review complained about hardware issues on a software review, which seems to be the case here as well

So basically some sites think its too complicated for thier " hit a to win " gaming lifestyle.

No, they validated their criticisms in writing - specifically the controls and game mechanics.

If you like the game then fine, not everyone is going to agree with your opinion.

This looked to me to be a really interesting piece on the Wii U - shame its not reviewing so well.

Really? How so?

Ive got most of the Edge magazines and after reading the other reviews i just knew they would give it a 6. A shame really, as i wanted this game to do really well. The concept looked really interesting to me and i like when non-traditional games come out like this.

Actually. Lots of folks care what EDGE thinks. Including me.

Why do you care what Edge thinks? Who is this 'Edge' anyway?

It would be good to know who wrote their review so you could get a better idea of their tastes but Edge don't name their reviewers cos they think it makes them all edgy and stuff.

Just makes the magazine look like the self-important irrelevance it is.

Well then you and i account for half their circulation apparently according to that guy.

I was being optimistic when I said they had four subscribers. They probably have much less than that.

Did you think that when they gave Bayonetta 10?

I've no interest in what they gave Bayonetta out of 10.
