Sony's Gamescom Media Briefing On "Release Plans for PlayStation 4"

Knack just looks like a slightly more tame version of something like R&C. It could still be decent, but from what we've seen of it it just looks far too simplistic. I honestly thought they'd put the whole particles angle to better use. Similar to what InFamous SS is doing with the whole dust stuff shooting through vents and all that. Looks far more fun.

Killzone, well you guys know I'm a massive fan. And DriveClub, whilst the E3 showing wasn't spectacular, I'm still holding out on this game really impressing. At least in concept, it sounds sublime. Racing super cars around the world in gorgeous exotic locations (Himalayan hill's and mountains, snow capped mountains of Quebec etc) with vast draw distances and open landscapes, what's not to love about that? If they can clean up the visuals somewhat, it should be killer.

I don't. I know they *are* happening at some point but no one was ever able to nail down when that would be.

I'm very hopeful for a good vita show tomorrow. I know I shouldn't be. I keep thinking it's going to happen and it keeps not happening (though gamescom last year was pretty good). And with the PS4 they obviously won't spend much time on it... but, man, I just feel like they are going to show a bunch of shit, drop the price and give it just a little spark. Not OMG VITA IS SAVED type stuff, but give it a pulse. Please Sony.

All I need is the new memory card prices, a sequel to Gravity Rush and/or Uncharted: GA, and if CoD: Ghosts is real.

Then everything else can be 100% PS4. :)

True. I think it is more action oriented. Bad choice of game to compare it to... but I still feel like I will like it. It's a genre I love and my expectations are in check. I do think most people are going to hate it though and it's going to get cremated by the press.

We gotta remember Cerny worked with naughty dog on games like Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter. I think it's gonna be a fun little game but also think people will complain about the full price tag when it's released alongside bigger launch games. Hopefully, we'll see more of the game tomorrow!

Newer builds have impressed people I know... but I get the feeling that the execution just isn't going to be at the level that a launch title from the system architect would be expected at.

What time does the conference start if I'm going to be in lovely Detroit? According to the online counter, the conference starts at 10 AM, but according to the GAF thread, the conference starts at 1. Which one is right?

I think Knack looks like a lot of fun. I'm waiting for impressions closer to launch to see if it's worth picking up, though.

Whoa, the prospect of new Destiny info never even crossed my mind. Hmm, to go on media blackout for Destiny or not...

WHOA WHOA WHOA! CONTEXT, YOU SWINE!

I too keep watching this thread needlessly, although I'm working graveyard shift so there's that excuse I guess...

I just want to say though I never would've expected the lead-up to this generation to be so one-sided.

I've been an Xbox gamer since the first one. I sold my PS2 to get an Xbox and never looked back. I've owned a grand total of EIGHT Xbox 360s, three of which I still own. I've logged around 25-30 hours a week on my 360 for the past 8 years... that's between 8,000-10,000 hours. 6,000+ hours of that, give or take, is on my current gamertag. I thought I would want to carry my gamertag persona with me as long as Xbox Live was up and running, hopefully indefinitely. So I created this gamertag (LifeExpectancy) back in 2008 in an attempt to have the "perfect" tag, completing the achievement list of every single game I played, which has reached a current tally of 275 games on this tag.

Please don't dismiss the above statements as pointless self promotion. I'm not saying all of this because I'm a die-hard MS fanboy or because I'm trying to be the next Stallion83. That isn't possible first off, and secondly my statements are meant to cast a light on what I'm about to say next...

I find myself all but certain of cancelling my XB1 preorder (or selling it on CL) and just gaming on the PS4. Even if all of MS's policy reversals stand and they don't do any re-reversals mid generation, it's just left such a sour taste in my mouth. I don't think they'll ever truly recover from the image destruction and consumer distrust they've done to themselves since May.

At the very least even if I keep my XB1 I think I'll wind up cancelling my XBL gold and just reverting to a silver account to play single-player only games going forward, making a PS4 my primary console and my only one for multiplayer gaming. They can take my gamerscore and shove it up their ass as far as I'm concerned, because all of this going down just makes me realize how much they've taken my focus away from gaming for enjoyment and turned it into a chore sometimes during this generation.

For every piece of DLC I purchased merely for (gamerscore completion)'s sake, for every year I paid for XBL with nothing to show for it but the occasional multiplayer match that I did more for achievements than for fun, for both of my RROD'd consoles, I both despise and thank MS. I despise them for making it apparent they never really did learn from their mistakes at the beginning of the 360's generation, and I thank them for making me realize and remember that gaming should first and foremost be about the joy of gaming, for making me realize that I need to move on and expand back into other platforms again.

Started off as on 360 this gen as many did. Didn't even get a PS3 until about 3 years in.
Everything that Sony did at launch for PS3 was just wrong. I feel like they have humbled themselves since and made great strides to offer value. PS+ member since it started.

Now the tables have turned. It's really a crazy thing to see. I feel like the damage has already been done as far as rep goes for MS. Are they already learning their lesson though?

Twitter is a hell of a thing, shit I kinda hate it, but with it there has never been such an open forum available to all to express themselves. I seriously hate to think what would of came if people were apathetic and let some of these terrible decisions just sit and accept it.

There were Oculus Rift PS4 support rumors swirling around not to long ago. And I don't mean cryptic comments and smirks from Yoshida, I mean rumors that Sony would unveil support at Gamescom. Was that all conjecture? Rumor based on nothing but wishful thinking?

Even if they don't announce it today, I SO hope they do end up supporting it. I don't have the money to build the rig necessary to run that thing (especially the high-res consumer version) so I would absolutely die if they work the magic to make it compatible with PS4 (only for certain titles of course and possibly with concessions).

Forget exclusive game and content deals, I want a whole new way to experience games!

Thats makes no sense to me.

I'm assuming he means that because Cerny is behind the game, the expectations are going to be much higher. Cerny has made a name for himself both for adept technical proficiency/understanding, and a resume of working with some quality titles.

He's said himself though, Knack is a smaller title, made from a not so huge team. So I think people should dial down their expectations somewhat. But I guess we'll have to wait and see if it does turn out to be anything more than just average.

What aspect of it? The concept or my wording?

Oh ok I see makes sense, sorry mort!

Right. I think Cerny probably spread himself too thin by becoming the face of the PS4 while leading this team. I also think he didn't quite grasp that his celebrity was going to skyrocket. So Knack started off as a small team throwback to a simpler time. But now the internet is obsessed with the man, they have seen his resume and they aren't looking for what is basically a glorified ps2 game. So expectations are sky high but the game was never, ever supposed to be this amazing, transcending title. It's a love letter to a time that has passed. It's also a game designed for kids. Neither of those things are what the general gaming audience that buys launch units want.

It is what I want though. Among other things.

Is this the calm before the storm? Megatons are upon us!

I just hope to see more gameplay than talk or trailers. The demo of The Last of Us during E3 2012 showed exactly how it is supposed to be done:

GAF is starting to get slow, or is it just me?
Gamescom is coming, brace yourselves!

I dunno, but I think Sony's going about it wrong hyping Destiny so much. The game is a multiplatform game, so featuring it so much isn't really that advantageous for Sony in convincing prospective buyers to choose their console over the competition. MS doing the same for Titanfall makes much more sense.

I second this awesome opinion.

Though I doubt that's what we'll actually get given the length of the conference. Luckily there's Gamescom stage demo's for that though!

Can anyone provide context on the Cerny "triangles" comment? I can't find where that came from.

If you're referring to "time to triangle," it's from a presentation Cerny did about a month or so ago, and refers to how long it takes to get a proper engine working on a platform. Something like, how long it takes to get an engine to a state where it can render the maximum number of triangles on its target platform. Specifically, it was to point out that getting a game engine to that level is far easier on PS4 compared to PS3 and even PS2, thanks in large part to a comparatively straightforward x86 architecture.

The presentation he did in Spain a month or so ago. I forget what it was called... Either way, it's an amazing 45 minute presentation that you absolutely need to find and watch.

Thanks guys. Watching now.

I think we will see games getting revealed faster.
The developement time had been cut down significantly according to Cerny.
So it wont be like a reveal and 2 years after that the release of the game.
I think they can risk showing us new IP's eraly, of they release the year after that.
We are so used to games being teased and revealed 2 a 3 years after that this gen.
And with the rumors that FIFA is bundeling with Xbox One, i wonder what response Sony will give.
Maybe the teaer for Uncharted 4 to undercut the hype MS will create.

I don't understand the reasoning behind showing The Order so soon. As a general rule, I'm against announcing a game by simply showing a trailer and then telling people to wait. Either you announce a game that mixes CG and gameplay or you have gameplay ready to show relatively soon. Stig's game not being shown or even hinted at is equally troubling.
