Sony's Gamescom Media Briefing On "Release Plans for PlayStation 4"

You know what you need to do...

That's disgusting. Someone shop in Cerny's face.

I know famousmortimer (I loved Streakdome '97, by the way!) has said that Sony may hold back so they can pound out new announcements all next year. But I think they should be wary about moving too conservatively. The entire narrative about the PS3's early years was "no games"...it's often said the Vita has "no games".... They can't let that become the perception here.

If I'm them, I show the rumored new IP by Santa Monica. I know the studio has a pedigree of extremely high production value, so maybe it isn't demo-capable yet. But the God of War III team haven't released a game in 41 months. Surely they have something acceptable to show, right? Even just an in-engine trailer would work.

That, plus Housemarque, plus a first-party PSN game, plus a couple console-exclusive indies, plus third-party partnerships, would go far to show that the promised rich lineup for the first year is coming together. Relying mostly on second looks at known quantities lets doubt creep in.

There was never any doubt that PS2 would dominate. They should try to recapture that feeling.

It is fucking baffling that they chose to show The Order before Santa Monica's (Stig's team) new game.

They already are. Cheap price, simple architecture, and the PS4 looks like a PS2 Slim!

Hey, nice to meet you too. Anything I can openly attack you about? I'm not looking for trouble, why are you being a jerk? Because I tend to be an enthusiastic, hyperbolic person?

I was answering a fellow gaffer's question to the best of my ability and offering my opinion on it. Now, may I ask: How are you contributing to the discussion and civil discourse of Gaf when that's how you choose to interact with others?

How some people make it to member status, I'll never know.

Are you being serious? Oh man I was just having fun. Just the answer to that post was funny, hence the lol?

I just read it wrong?

I don't know if they should show stuff too far into the future. A CG trailer for a game in early production wouldn't do much good as seen with early PS3 announcements.

First year games and a tease of 2nd year maybe?

Defuses the potential "no games" meme's people might otherwise try and peddle.

I agree. MSFT is drumming up excitement for the XBO with a trailer for Halo, which isn't due for some time. Sony should do the same with some of their hard-hitting titles. Although, considering the backlash that The Last Guardian, Agent, FFvs13, etc., has produced because of their delays, I can understand Sony's reticence to divulge anything too soon.

Twice a decade someone knows where my username is from. Kudos. Mr show is the best.

Sony's argument (not mine, mind you... As I want all the games now) is that if they are projecting to sell out all their stock through the fiscal year that there isn't anything they can do to make that better. They have hit the ceiling. And while the story of LOL No Gamez may become a fanboy battle cry around here it still won't stop the system from selling. And as long as they start announcing new games by the time the system launch hype winds down they will be fine. If they announce uncharted 4 right now or in December it's not going to change nov-march in any way, shape or form. So what's the incentive to do it now?

Sorry I misinterpreted and overreacted. I haven't slept well lately so I've been snappy.

Where I was coming from:

Call me sensitive as a new junior, but I couldn't help read that as an attack on my character.

I'm hyperbolic. It's who I am. Things that are good are "great", things that are great are "unbelievable!" I enjoyed that presentation, I figured he would too, and so I worded it, as per usual, with hyperbole.

Look, I'm not trying to fight, man, really. Cliche as it is, I really do just want to get along with everybody.

The Order must be further along.
Yeah, it's not all that surprising. It's been 33 months since Ready at Dawn released their last full game (the only thing they've done since is the PS3 port of their PSP GoWs). That's not terribly shorter than SSM, especially given the probable differences in production scale.

I don't think that makes me an asshat, it's just how I talk.

Hey sensitive junior, learn how to notice you have a PM :)

LOL Calm down man! You ever do something with your friends and they do something bad but funny and you go, "Man, you're a dick!" Same concept. :P

It would be fucking crazy if they announce The Last Guardian at Gamescom. That would be completely out of left field because everyone is expecting it to be announced at TGS if it is announced at all.

I get where you're coming from, but my response as per earlier.

Just because you're ahead, don't hold back is my personal advice. Microsoft has already shown a lot of games, and a few people are already comparing exclusive announcements and assuming Sony is thin on that front. To avoid the "has no games" meme being attached to the console, I really think Sony ought to come out and announce a bunch of stuff. Not an avalanches worth, but enough to silence doubters.

More so for hardcore gaming public image than actual sales.

I'm so excited. It's February 20th(?) and E3 all over again. Gonna wake up early and buy snacks! Then gonna sit and wait and text my friend while he works all about it.

It's like I've had Christmas 3 times this year. I feel like a kid again.

And that's crappy reasoning.

Does Sony think no one is going to care about new TitanFall or Halo info because MS showed it early ?

20 games in the first year , that's what they said....

I guess I'm just finding it hard to believe these titles are as far along as they should be , unless they plan to release games with just a few months from reveal to retail , which is really unlikely , right ?

How many games that debuted at GDC or E3 2013 are coming this year ? 12-14 months isn't a long time to be revealing games for next year.

I agree. If I was running sony i would announce more now. I would be trying to take it as hard to ms as possible. I was just explaining what their more conservative philosophy is all about.

And at the very least their bad philosophies now are just kinda off the mark and not completely insane like they were a few years back.

They should do what they did with that blurred teaser picture of the PS4 before they actually revealed it. Show a fuzzy compilation of games without revealing they actually are so that the fanboys are busy speculating and analyzing every detail.

Not that I want that, but it would be like eating and keeping the cake at the same time.

BF4 ,Watchdogs and new COD are going to be what people buy whit new consoles not investing a lot in first party launch titles is smart thing to do

It sure is! When joining GAF I briefly contemplated calling myself Van Hammersly (master of billiard teaching!).

Sony's argument (not mine, mind you... "It is not enough merely to win; others must lose." They will not sell any more consoles in the first few months, but they could make Microsoft sell less. It's not just listwars--for some number of folks that aren't buying at launch, promised software sets mental goals. Cheap as consoles are, most people still have to save up to buy them. Putting stakes in the future ground spreads "I gotta have that!" feeling, and can convert the unsold.

But do you think Sony would announce some Spring 14 games at least? From the top of my head, I think the only major titles in Spring are Destiny, TitanFall which isn't a PS4 title, and ESO, but that's a MMO. I don't think it's quite smart of them to hold all their cards till E3 and announce 12 games for holidays 2014 alone. I can see The Order, a Naughty Dog game, some Japanese Game not called the Last Guardian, and GT6 HD in the holidays of next year. Just those titles is plenty enough so that they don't cannibalize each other.

Today i saw 3 separate people try to go home from @SonySantaMonica but got entranced by what was on on @adampuhl 's machine :D #nospoilers

So been playing the KZ Merc beta and guys..it's AMAZING. A true showcase of what the vita can do and it's a lot of fun. This is the standard I want to see more of. Absolutely stunning visuals and some cool/fun gameplay mechanics = win.

I hope to see at least one proper 'exclusive' vita game tomorrow. Not asking for much :D Hope they won't disappoint.

Anywho roughly 10 hours to go :D Let's hope for a fun show tomorrow. See you all in the morning

That makes sense to me. It also makes sense not to pull teams off making games to polish up a demo at too early a stage in the development process.

Of course I kinda feel they should have released a couple of this years PS3 games on PS4 instead but that's a different argument.

I just wanted infamous for launch. I'll definitely get it when that comes out, but it might seem better to wait out the launch if they dont show something more or a significant knack improvement

I'd say that's where a balance comes in - I'm sure Sony wants to make sure they've got juicy reveals for other events coming not only throughout this year, but going into the next as well, so they don't want to just let loose an announcement splooge like MS did at E3. At the same time, I figure they want to keep people hooked on their system, so I'm figuring they'll just spread announcements out throughout to keep peoples' attention. So try to get that sweet spot between keeping the audience hooked with announcements of things to look forward to, while not letting it all out at once. Helps keep them in that commanding position, I figure.

How about awesome Killzone multiplayer, improved DriveClub build and more great third party stuff? How many games do most people actually buy at launch? Based on posts here, not usually more than two...

I want most of the fall ps3 games on the ps4 as well but they are just flat out likely to make more money on the ps3. And Sony's games division is 7th out 8 divisions in profit. So they unfortunately had to go for short term gains even if that software may have established them better market share for next gen. They need money NOW.

And yeah, making demos takes time. I almost wish the driveclub guys didn't have to make a new one because that game looks like it needs every second it can get in development.

I'm not really an online fps guy and none of my friends play kz which is the only reason i play those games online and i don't really like most driving. I like them much more arcadey. Platformers, rpgs, and action games are much more my thing.

I've gotta abandon this thread and sleep. It's like Christmas Eve as a kid but instead of staying up listening for Santa, I'm refreshing this thread, too excited for the presents tomorrow to sleep.

"The sooner you go to sleep the sooner it'll be morning!" Thanks mom. Clearly I learned nothing.
