Sony Gamescom Press Conference Thread: Let Us Dream

Mort, I hear you loud and clear but 'amazing'? I understand your feeling and I agree but...amazing? Opinions and all but I'd put it at 'good'. Which isn't bad at all for the guy that was already winning.

I'm sticking with amazing. I thought it was ballsy and showed a true vision of what an open platform console could be like. Gaming is dominated by these huge AAA games which the developers themselves call "unsustainable" and Sony came out and said "We have the answer, it's called variety."

Fucking loved it. But I love indie games. And I love B tier games. And I love japanese games.

If all i cared about was AAA I wouldn't be all that thrilled. But EA and MS covered that pretty well this morning. There's something for everyone.

My takes

  • All these indie games are starting to feel a bit bloaty. The majority of indie titles are not doing anything new and I'am sure the vast majority of people have played very similar types of games plenty of times. Its a good thing having good indie support but having a line up flooded with titles the vast majority wont care about does not add value and seems rather pointless.I suppose the term ''quality not quantity'' fits my stance.
  • So Sony Santa Monica + naughty dogs are developing games! What is this? an announcement of unannounced games being developed?
  • Is the remote play feature supported by all PS4 games or not?
    Jim Ryan said
    and then Andrew House said
  • Which is it Sony

  • The OS interface looks functional, but its not that slick and could be a bit faster.

Well, both could kinda be right. Sony has said, from the start, ALL PS4 games, except those using the PS Eye, will be able to be played via remote play. They said it at the reveal, from the beginning. The Remote Play feature is built into the OS, and is a feature of the system, not a feature of the game like it was on PS3. So it will be available for all PS4 games, as long as they don't use the PS Eye.

The Ovosonico game looks awesome!

The conference was a great showcase for PSN and digital distribution, but not so much for retail games for PS4.

Don't get me wrong, I love Sony's support for independent developers and small projects, but it gets me worried about 2014 exclusive retail titles. I know that Shuhei Yoshida has been quoted promising 20 exclusives games from SCE WWS in the 1st year, but if they plan on announcing any new games for Jan through Aug of 2014, the clock is ticking out as AAA games are usually announced at least a year in advance. We ony have InFamous & The Order to look forward to in 2014, and after E3 2006 we knew about almost all of the 2007 titles (Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, MotorStorm). One didn't have to worry about future support.

I guess we'll have to depend on SCE Japan Studio to announce more support at TGS, even though they have a lot on their plate already (Soul Sacrifice just came out, Puppeteer, Rain and Knack come out this fall).

Do you guys who love AAA games really want more? Do we need more shooters than that? Is a next gen BF4 and Call of Duty really not enough? Should sony have showed off that all their studios were working on brown shooters?

Um, AAA doesn't mean brown shooter. Look at the PS3 2007 games I listed above, an online multiplayer vehicle shooter, a dragon flying game, a fantasy action game, a third person shooter/adventure game and a racing game. AAA retail games can take many forms and the more different forms they are released in means the more likely I will have something cool to play.

Sony today proved that other multimedia stuff is not behind a pay wall, Unlike X1.

People ignored this news which is a megaton by itself.

What about Japanese games? There weren't any Japanese games...just some clear influences in stuff like Rime.

The outlook on 2014 and 2015 in terms of games is what people looked for.
Since a console is a long term investment alot of people wanted to see what's still coming (especially exclusive titles).
There were many indie titles who still don't have a date yet, so people expect a look into the AAA future as well.

Well, we still got the TGS next month and the VGA Awards (yeah, the event itself is a joke, but alot of big announcements were made there).

The conference was definitly okay, alot of small highlights and ambitious projects.
Personally, I was a bit sad about not seeing anything about The Order, of course it was clear that they wouldn't show anything about it, but for a title that launches 2014 I would have loved a short gameplay teaser.

Welp, one month until the GAF soap continues :D

This whole indie games are not games is embarrassing. This is the mentality that leads to a risk-aversion industry that will self destruct in less than a decade. If the only thing that matters is the 60€/$ product with a 40M budget then get ready for a rude awakening.

And the idea that indie games and "games that could be played on an older console aka poor graphics" don't sell consoles couldn't be more from the truth. Just look at Minecraft on X360.

It's really sad to read some posts in this thread. Games are games, no matter the budget or image quality.

What about Japanese games? There weren't any Japanese games...just some clear influences in stuff like Rime.

My point is that I'm the type of person that likes a wide variety of games. So, as that type of person, I thought it was a great show.

I didn't mean they showed Japanese games... I figured that was a given.

Respect! I love real passion.

It really caught me off guard.

Man, those indie games. The breadth of the brand across platforms and what's to come.

This was a very, very successful slow burn. Not as hawt as certain people wanted or wanted to rally against, but there's some serious heat building up.

Sony should be thanking whoever they pray to every night that MS fucked up so bad and have an even less interesting launch lineup than they do. Otherwise this showing today probably would have led to quite a few preorder changes in MS' favor.

Possibly, it was a horrendously bad show for those of us who couldn't give two shits about handhelds and indie games.

With all the momentum Sony has had since the reveal in Feb and all the backfiring MS has experienced you'd think they would reveal at least one special PS4 game today just to keep the momentum and positive buzz going.

Also, the producer of that conference should be fired along with the shitty cameraman. Does he really think people wants to watch the audience during trailers and live demonstrations instead of the direct feed? What an absolute tit.

Anyway, looking forward to November when my PS4 arrives! :)

Still getting a PS4 on launch day(if I can find one since I didn't preorder...) but that conference was pretty boring. Indie games are cool as a on-the-side thing, but they're not anything more than that. Sony needs to lock up and show some big games.

At this point, I think they're playing it a bit too safe.

Outside of Killzone, aren't all those AAA games you mention multiplat? How is it a next gen BF4 or CoD, if they are also on current gen systems? Just because they are 1080p or have better lighting or something? You can already get all that on your PC. In fact, I'm pretty sure most of those games you mentioned I can indeed get on a PC. Sony needs more AAA exclusives on the PS4.

Why in the world should Sony show games that will detract from the games they are trying to sell in three months and/or get slaughtered by aaa shooter hype?

I genuinely don't understand this. Do you think Sony will have plenty of games from their jest party studios over the next five years? Do you think them choosing to show you what they are has an impact on where they are in development?

Don't buy the system until you see something you like. What's the difference if you buy it now for full price or wait until what you want them to show you is actually out.

There's a thread listing every Sony studio's current projects. There are like 59372 studios unaccounted for. Vita is a corpse so trust me. Ps4 will be nonstop.

Annnnnd it's back..

Holy smokes @ those first couple pages. Haha, so much pointless rage over games.

I think people expected waaaaay to much, sounded like some people were on the verge of tears. Over all though... Shitty camera work, but a ton of games... I can't complain.

So, did Sony gave away that a new Syphon Filter may be coming for PS4? They mentioned that all SCE studios are working on PS4, and on the picture of the globe, they had Bend studio listed. And Verendus has said the one of the titles Sony is working on is a stealth game. I know it's all a big stretch, but it's seeming possible.

In 1 month is when the GAF soap really begins, so far we have only had the pilots.

the best as yet to come, game comparisons, marketing campaigns, further plunders and victories from both sides and of course more pach attachs.

The outlook on 2014 and 2015 in terms of games is what people looked for.

Well... you can't say I didn't warn ya'll about that. I know that people take Verendus and CBoaT much more seriously than me.... but I was 100% on this fucker. Vita price cut, SSHD spiritual successor in PS+, no big internal studio games, october wasn't the launch date, etc.

I guess part of my feeling about this conference is that I did believe me... so my expectations of the conference was that they weren't going to be able to wow me... and they did.

It's been explained before. It's "almost all" because games that require the camera, or any other peripheral that may come out in the future, won't work (well Im sure they will stream but you wont be able to control them).

Every game that can be played with a dual shock will be remote play enabled.

Edit: For instance, you won't be able to play Just Dance through remote play.

Oh okay, I just hope that the lack of L2,R2,L3 and R3 doesn't hurt the experience too badly, the back touch panel isn't exactly my favorite replacement for buttons, especially analogue triggers.

It was as good as I could have hoped. Perhaps a demo of one of this promising indie games would have been nice. People need to put this into perspective, Sony is showcasing their tenacity to hunt and get exclusivity from indie devs, which encompasses w wide range of genres. This sells units.

And as has been stated, they aren't going to blow their load since TGS is coming. Their major Japanese studios are going to bring in on the hammer if you will and show something fancy. Also lets not forget their continued commitment to the PS3 too

Along with what has already been announced by the major western studios, I don't see how Sony has made one wrong move all year, this Gamescom, exemplifies to me their razor sharp skills rather.

P.S. well except for mandatory paid online >__> and the lack of Vita exclusives

Found it incredibly underwhelming. With all due respect to indies, im slowly getting sick with this love affair between them and the big 3, with Sony basically repeating 'we love indies, we love indies, we love indies...' But what annoyed me the most was I believe Ubisoft had more actual time than first party ps4 games. Ive learnt to temper my hype, especially for TGS.

I will not be buying a Microsoft console anytime soon and the conference by no means swayed me from a launch PS4 ... but I really find myself questioning about the first party games especially since only 1 new WWS game has been announced since the PS4 reveal at the start of the year. It just seems and feels like Sony is getting a little overconfident and you have to give credit to MS showing off what they are doing (even if they are blowing their load).

The highlight of the conference for me was Rime, which looked incredibly awesome.

I was impressed. At least it looks like we may not get another generation dominated with AAA shootybang games , focus tested to death. Sony are going to offer us variety and choice, if we don't take it then we deserve the shitty industry we will be left with.

GAF is usually filled with people bemoaning the whole "every game must be AAA" mindset, yet the forum is filled with "lolindies" type posts.

:(

It's really sad to read some posts in this thread. Games are games, no matter the budget or image quality.

You have no way of knowing if people bought a 360 specifically for Minecraft. Millions of people bought Castle Crashers but I don't think they bought a 360 specifically for that game. I bought a PS3 for MGS4, I will not buy a PS4 for whatever indie title you can throw out there.

I buy new systems because they offer something that is not possible on my current system. There is no reason those indie games couldn't be released on the PS3, especially if the Vita can run them.

Other than your mean, mean swipe at the vita.... you're exactly right. Sony is going to sell out of consoles and is trying to sell the software that is coming to those consoles now.

To some announcing Halo now makes the xbox one more attractive... but I think to most people they think "i'll get that when halo comes out." The most exciting game in your coming soon list shouldn't be a year away. If sony started dropping ND and SSM bombs that's exactly what would have happened.

Fire the Cameraman or the producer behind that mess this show was !
The show was decent but the constant switching between cameras was AWFUL!
Why do i want to watch the crowd as a new game trailer is being shown ? :I

Maybe the camera work was directed by Major Nelson...?

I don't get people, really. They just announced that SSD spiritual successor, Rime, Helldivers, that game with Rapture in the title, Shadow of the Beast and a bunch of indie game...and yet here we are discarding all of those and lamenting the absence of new software announcements...
WTF!

It's madness. Absolute madness.

Surprised to see that people are disappointed. I guess the leaks kind of
spoilered
the event.

Had we not been exposed to the leaks we would learned some pretty cool stuff:

- console launch dates
- vita price cut,
- GT 6 launch date (that was news to me at least)
- Fez on sony platforms
- Borderlands 2 on vita
- tons of indie games

You could argue the exact same thing for AAA titles. Really you should judge games individually on their own merits.

Probably because none of those are interesting and not what we want from Sony.

All I wanted was 1 new big announcement from them for next year. Even just a tease.

I'm in the same boat. All the more power to indies, but it's getting really stale and taking up way too much time for a console that lives on big games (see: does your iphone run uncharted?). I was pretty underwhelmed and nearly bored during the section i was able to watch. The November date was pretty disappointing too.

I don't get people, really. They just announced that SSD spiritual successor, Rime, Helldivers, that game with Rapture in the title, Shadow of the Beast and a bunch of indie game...and yet here we are discarding all of those and lamenting the absence of new software announcements...
WTF!

Just a tease at another game from the World Wide Studios would have been enough to satisfy many of us.

People are upset?

They just announced a fuckload of way cool new IP. It's not like you've seen what SSM, Naughty Dog and Guerilla are working on and didn't like it.

And please don't tell me people have an issue with the games that were announced, they pretty much all looked AMAZING.

I'm sticking with amazing. I thought it was ballsy and showed a true vision of what an open platform console could be like. Gaming is dominated by these huge AAA games which the developers themselves call "unsustainable" and Sony came out and said "We have the answer, it's called variety."

If all i cared about was AAA I wouldn't be all that thrilled. But EA and MS covered that pretty well this morning. There's something for everyone.

I love indie games too. My most played games on my PC and the reason that I got a laptop. Having said that I still stand by my calling the conference 'good'. It's not a knock against it, just wasn't a homerun to me. To you it was and I can totally respect that. Happiness is a great thing!

It really caught me off guard.

Man, those indie games. The breadth of the brand across platforms and what's to come.

This was a very, very successful slow burn. Not as hawt as certain people wanted or wanted to rally against, but there's some serious heat building up.

And that's all that I'm saying. I knew Sony came to play hardball with Indies, it's one of the reasons that I decided to jump in day one. I just wanted something a little more. Just that nudge to put it over the top from 'good' to 'classic'. But that's just me being greedy. I hope I don't get my head chopped for saying that :P

For the life of me I cannot understand why Sony isn't showing off more of its 1st party stuff.

We saw new games today, but they were from more obscure studios.

I think the four games shown were:

Everybody's Going To the Rapture
Rime
Shadow of the Beat
Rosogun

Am I missing anything?

What they showed was interesting, but the game are pretty low profile! I thought they would have one big name game like Little Big Planet or something.

What gives?

There is going to be absolutely no shortage of AAA. In one month people will have access to Killzone, BF4, CoD, AC4, Madden, FIFA, Watch_Dogs, ETC.

Do you guys who love AAA games really want more? Do we need more shooters than that? Is a next gen BF4 and Call of Duty really not enough? Should sony have showed off that all their studios were working on brown shooters?

The conference was amazing because it wasn't just indie or AAA. It was an absolute variety of games. If all you care about is AAA you are already all set. How many shooters can you buy in one launch?

I couldn't agree more with this. The diversity they showed today actually got me more hyped for next gen. Whether that will be the case for the masses remains to be seen but fuck that I want most of those games I saw today injected into my veins!

Wow, lots of nice looking games. Anyone know how the triggers and L3/R3 are emulated on vita during remote play?
Didn't really see the guy playing AC4 via Vita tap on the touch screen for L3/R3 (which I assume will emulate the the dualshock4 touchpad). There's the rear touch pad but I think that's gonna be used to emulate triggers.

Probably because none of those are interesting and not what we want from Sony.

All I wanted was 1 new big announcement from them for next year. Even just a tease.

The crux of the problem. If it's not from ND, SM, GG, Polyphony or Media Molecule, then it's not worthy of recognition. How about you give those titles that were just presented a chance...maybe they'll prove better than the big AAA games.
I think that Sony are playing their cards masterfully. Think about it. Most of their internal teams haven't show a thing, and yet, the catalogue they've already presented is worthy of consideration and compares favorably to that of the competing console (imo). No need to rush...

This was how you do a conference IMO. Just like...actual live UI demo, game after game after game, great announcements, and like 1:30 in length. Scee mauls scea every year.

Are you drunk? This is one of the most poorly presented conferences I've seen. Who was the idiot continually cutting off the direct feed trailers so that we could see them from 50 miles away?

can anyone make a thread for this game?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry18sfkqzTg
9554125336_ff0b83f155_o.jpg

brb gotta make loads of gifs! I legit "dawwwww"ed when her hand was pulled. Rime and Murasaki Baby, is Team Ico seeing this? And Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons? If TLG ends up being cancelled, at least we got some cool games inspired by them.

Well... you can't say I didn't warn ya'll about that.

Yeah, but it's a neverending story here and everywhere else.
People take some sentences way to seriously (especially CBoat's info on Sony stuff).

Even though I knew that Gamescom isn't the place for AAA announcement's yet (it's slowly getting there though), I got caught up with the rumour about the release date which kinda ruined the show for me.
I wanted to enjoy some games on my PS4 within the same timeframe as the PS3/360 version, but that's my own fault.

As I already said, some small bits would have been enough.
Seeing the concept arts from The Order here is absolutely satisfying for me and would have been great in the press conference.
They give a small glimpse on how the actual world and the game can look like.

Just a tease at another game from the World Wide Studios would have been enough to satisfy many of us.

Like a logo, a title, a CG trailer, or even a real-time cutscene? What would be the point, really? We know all of the WWS teams are working on PS4. That's a sufficient tease for me...

Anyone know the worldwide launch numbers for the previous consoles? I'm curious to see where Sony stand with their "over 1 million preorders."

The most two interesting things I saw were definitely Rime and Everybody's Gone to the Ratpure. By the way, is there still anyone interested in Minecraft that doesn't already own it?

Are you drunk? This is one of the most poorly presented conferences I've seen. Who was the idiot continually cutting off the direct feed trailers so that we could see them from 50 miles away?

the shitty direction of the cameras isn’t the same as the content and pacing of the show.

the video director was drunk, the people on stage and the stuff they showed was pretty decent.

The crux of the problem. If it's not from ND, SM, GG, Polyphony or Media Molecule, then it's not worthy of recognition. How about you give those titles that were just presented a chance...maybe they'll prove better than the big AAA games.

Highly doubtful. That's the reason why I rant against indie games so much, because they're a poor substitute. Maybe if they can get out of this experimental game/1994 arcade stage and make some deeper stuff then I would embrace them more.

And it doesn't have to be from one of those few mega studios. Anything that looks like it was worked on for more than a few months with more than a couple thousand dollars invested in it would be enough to get the ball rolling.

I'm honestly confounded by the responses of

"I'm cancelling my preorder"

"MS gets it Sony doesn't"

there was NOTHING shown today that should make anyone have a change of heart like that. We know what both consoles are and we have seen their launch lineups AND things coming later, yet people are acting like they were expecting a ton of announcements.

there is a sentiment from someone in the last few pages "They could have shown more of the Order and others, etc, instead of this indie bullshit"

Again, if that is what it would take for you to keep your preorder... to see some more of a game that we already know is coming, then I'm calling bullshit.

Confirmation that streaming will work for most titles is a HUGE announcement, and so is twitch at the system level.

Having a "meh" response seems reasonable. Being excited about some of the features and new titles they showed seems reasonable...

but taking your ball and going home because of what was shown today just doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Over-privileged, self-entitled Facebook/Twitter-addicted hacksaws would be a good starting point of understanding them.

Both systems have more than enough content to last them a good year, given what's been shown so far for launch and in the launch window. Big bold reveals of new AAA stuff can wait until late fall/CES next year as far as I care.

And that's what it's about, really. They're pissed because some Halo or COD killer wasn't announced or shown, that they didn't reveal Uncharted 4 or w/e. Have some patience, and try to enjoy the downtime for once. Yeesh.

Some people just need to reign in their expectations a little.

I thought it was a great show, exactly what I wanted from Gamescom and now I'm looking forward to TGS (where I'm sure there will be more "what no Uncharted 4 at launch reveal? pre-order cancelled" "all it showed was a bunch of Japanese games, pre-order cancelled" style meltdowns)
