Depending on how things go in the next 10 years, I'm not so sure. Republicans at the national and local levels have done pretty much every single thing they can within the limits of the law to repress minorities, homosexuals, you name it. Obama's administraion is a thorn in their side and they know it, as do GOP/Tea Party voters. Get a GOPer President with a Congress that is hijacked by the far right half the time and things could really get out of hand. Look at what the GOP has been able to do politically and in terms of motivating their base while only controlling 1/3 of Washington. Just imagine what happens when they get the WH again. They get to act on it directly instead of being obstructionist and setting things up as the state level as some kind of odd precedent of sorts.

I've gotta say, recently, you can kind of sense more tension between races in public. Especially black and white. Over the past couple years it has become more apparent as Tea Party nation refuses to shut the fuck up and black folks got really upset after the Trayvon thing and other racially motivated crimes. As a white male it just depresses me.

No one is saying America exists in a state of racial harmony, but try to get some perspective. 50 years ago, black civil rights leaders were getting blown away left and right and mobs were tossing molotov cocktails at each other. Now people have Facebook debates about George Zimmerman. We have a black president now. The sheen of that event may have worn off for any number of reasons, but it's no less of a historical development just because we're used to it.

Up until a few years ago, homosexuals couldn't marry no matter what and Hispanics were being told to go back to Mexico or else. Now legality for gay marriage is surging throughout the country and even Republicans are pushing for immigration reform (not necessarily for the right reasons, but citizenship is citizenship).

The country is far from where it needs to be, a lot of bad shit still happens on a daily basis and there are at least decades of work left on the racism, homophobia, and xenophobia fronts - which will be helped significantly by a lot of the old guard simply dying off. But when you consider the progress already made in a relatively short amount of time, I think the prognosis is pretty good.

The Australian baseball player, the guy held hostage told to say he was sorry for being white, this elderly guy etc...
Every story is reported "Black teen/man does (insert crime) to white person"

Then there's 3000 comments like..
"Hang the ni**ers"
"What do you expect from animals"
"Where's Jesse and Al now?
Etc...

Right now in America there's a pretty strong idea on the right that racism and hate crimes have swung the other way and to be honest I think a lot of liberals are thinking it in the back of their minds.
