Killzone Mercenary Beta Discussion

Finally got some time to sink into this. Really enjoying it so far and will definitely get the retail release. The gyro aiming instantly elevates it above Resistance, which is the only other Vita shooter I have played.

I still need to try out the gyro aiming because I loved it in Uncharted GA. Killzone just controls so well for me so far that I haven't bothered turning it on. In Uncharted, it was a necessity because of what I thought was crappy aiming.

Are those cards like region based? Or why am I always getting the same cards?

They're based on a players preferred loadout.

Diamond: Sub-Machine Gun
Spades: Sniper
Clubs: Assault Rifles and Light machine guns
Hearts: Secondary guns

I love it, it feels so natural. It also only activates when aiming with L, so it doesn't impede moving around or anything.

I downloaded this last night. Played it until my battery died. Work up this morning and did it again. This is the best handheld game ever already IMO. I cant believe how good it looks and how much fun it is. My god GG is on a roll lately.

Battery dies so fast in this Beta....lol
Hope it's not a big deal with full version.

Hope so too, but pushing these visuals, I fully expect this game to drain the battery fast. I am satisfied with the amount of play time I get in this beta though. Guess it's because I mostly play at night on the lowest brightness.

Anyone know if the guns available in the beta are less or the same as in the full game?

Great game. I'll no doubt pick it up. I'll have to look up how many maps they plan to have.

I can't figure out how to initiate melee, or what supposed to do once someone is beating me. Maybe I just sit there and take it?

I can't believe there's a Killzone first-person shooter coming out and has no bot support especially on a portable what junk is this?

As much as I'm enjoying the core gameplay and the beta itself theres no way I can support something like this with my wallet

I mean, let's pretend that not every single killzone before this has had full bot support (even the ps2) ok. But this is a handheld, and this is the vita. Two strikes against this community. There aren't many vitas out there and killzone isn't a huge Sony ip to be honest so even though matches will be plentiful in the first few months, what's the long term outlook? Dire straits I say.

Portable only hinders this further as unlike a console that is stationary and should always have online assuming you have service, your vita goes everywhere, I'm in places without wifi all the time

But lets stop pretending, every single killzone FPS has had bots so basically... Wtf guerrilla?

I hear you man.

Multiplayer with bots ran like shit in the first Killzone on PS2, and Vita simply doesn't have the horsepower to run seven competitive bots in multiplayer at acceptable frame-rate. Be mindful that PS3 has much, much more raw processing power than Vita, so one can't expect an identical experience in a complex game.

Given this is Vita's flagship first-person-shooter, I'm sure the online community will be robust and long lived, so you won't have trouble finding matches. And as far as solo play is concerned, the developers have said the main campaign should last players somewhere in the realm of 10 hours, plus more when re-playing missions with tweaked goals and load-outs.

And then there is the matter of price; you can only get so much for $40, or its euro and GBP equivalent.

Ive hot the bêta for two day now. First of all, it looks and controls very good for a handheld. The Map given is big enough for a 8 player confrontation. It does not feel flat which mean there is room for sniping gameplay. The card system feels underwhelming. Is there even à purpose of collecting them? Everything else is perfect though. Each gun has à recoil, Armor give you perks and money system is addicting.

Now, my biggest problem is the interrogation mode. The best way to gain point is to silent melee the enemy in the back. The other way is to shoot to make the enemy agonise. 90% of the time, the guy die.

I think there Should be more original modes too.

I wich my english was better, i could say more!

Killzone on ps2 kinda ran like shit all the time regardless of online, single player or against bots

Performance was no worse against bots than online, I've played killzone 1 fairly recently on my ps2

It's very acceptable, compared to something like Perfect Dark that had amazing bots but legit performance problems when using them

Options aren't bad. And being tethered to online to enjoy the game once the 10 hour campaign is over is a bummer

Wouldn't bother me so much if there wasn't this huge track record of having bot support in prior games

What guns do you guys recommend? Been sticking with default.

Edit: Damn, default isn't so bad. Went 31-8 in my last round! I am officially hooked on this game, it kicks so much ass.

mission wise I have no idea what's going on beside body count ... Lol

I like.

I was in the same boat with Vanguard hacking.

Go read Massa's instructions on the previous page, that 21C Cowboy quoted for me. It's easy after that. Just use the item quickly because it doesn't carry over if you respawn.

Still kinda in the dark with the interrogations tho, and how to stop the damage at 90% or whatever, to actually interrogate someone.

Accidentally hit the power button last night in the middle of a match, putting the Vita to sleep. Quickly unlocked it again though and the game continued fine, so that was pretty cool!

I hate it when I am about to interrogate someone and my teammates shot him...

I did that once on pure reflexes, felt pretty bad for ruining the interrogation...

I was playing a match on Friday, and on the opposing team was this guy called JJ something.
This guy was really good, he was owning the match with his sniper rifle, and was leading the kill score.
But he was ignoring the phase goals and my team won... if that guy was playing the goals, his team would be invincible. too bad he was a loner.

How do you communicate with your team on the beta?

Any advice on what is the best weapon to take down Mantys? I find it hard to do even with a lock-on bazooka, but some people shoot down my ME pretty easily.

Also where can we report Beta impressions/bugs?

If it happens once its okay. But at some point its not by accident anymore.

I guess many people are just tired of the objectives and just play it like Team Deathmatch by now.

I do not communicate with my team. Its not possible unless you're in a party.

I notice people are pretty bad at doing the other objectives that doesn't involve valor cards and killing. Sometimes it gets frustrated when you try to hack and your team mates just want to kill or will not look out for you. Either ways this game is top notch. I haven't had this much fun playing online since COD 4. I love abusing proximity bombs which I loved using in Golden Eye like crazy. I just wish I could have more than one!

I did not think I would be interesting in buying a FPS game again. I just hope Single Player is good.

I'm not good in FPSs, or any competitive multiplayer games in general.
I decided to check the beta just to see the graphics on the vita screen. And I had some free time to play.

God, after few match, I got addicted. And the battery was dead when I realized that.

The controls weren't easy to master in my first match, and I died quit a lot. After few more rounds, it clicked.

It was fun, but I'm not sure yet. I might buy on release date, if I'm not busy with something else.

I find it hilarious that no one knows what the hell is going on and just run around going for kills whilst I'm hacking those terminals haha

Hey guys, does running give away your position on the radar?
Also does wearing armour with high noise suppression affect your visibility on the radar?
Just wondering because I've been playing with all the HUD off until today.

glad GAF approves...bodes well for this selling decently...I hope it takes off, Vita truly needs a multi-million seller, have to support this and tearaway just so the best portable of all time doesn't go away.

Yea, I kinda wish the beta had a quick intro explaining some of that stuff. I was lost as hell at first like most, until I read about it.

This game is incredible, have had lots of fun playing online today.

Got 45 points out of my teams 72, feels good man. A lot of players don't play the objective though, just keep going for kills - interrogation rounds can go scoreless plenty of times.

I lack the hacking ones though, very strategic, do your team go and hold them one at a time or do you just try to stop the other team from scoring. Can be very tense near the ends of those rounds.

Also really like the Vanguard system, don't think they're too powerful and generally like the system of how to obtain them in match.

Can't wait for the full game!

Played my best game yet. Man, was kickin' the other teams ass and 2 of them left. Im still surprised at how many people do not do the objectives. I did a good job at downing bad dudes by bustin' on there legs, then interrogating them. I also hacked every terminal thingy.

I really like the vanguard system. Nothing funnier than deploying your Sky Fire vanguard during the hacking rounds and laugh maniacally as you watch the little ants run for cover as best they can while I rain hellfire on them from above. :D

Really not a fan of all this new killstreak crap you get ( and how you can get them easily by going to those things). What I loved about KZ2 was how simple it was. Just wish there is a gamemode without it.

Expected, but the inconsistency is pretty annoying ( sometimes 4 bullets are enough to kill, other times 10 bullets still don't get the kill). This is down to p2p/ everyone playing through a wifi connection I assume.

I do actually prefer this artstyle over what we have seen of KZ:SF ( need to see the Helghast area more in KZ:SF, currently the game's locations look similar to what I expect out of crysis 2/3).

I disagree that it's "killstreak crap"... any of the stuff you get can be destroyed or shot out of the sky easily by those smart enough to look and aim.

How is the Inferno shotgun? What secondary weapon do you guys use? I usually stick with the regular shotgun or rocket launcher. I'm considering buying Inferno, tranquilizer pistol or shotgun handgun. How are those?

It's surprisingly balanced, yes. Well, except for Mantis. Hate them.

Cook a grenade and blow it out of the sky. Or, recently, I've found running circles around it to be quite effective. Try to gain height by climbing something, then jump back down. It appears quite distinctly on your minimap, so it shouldn't be too hard to avoid.

Inferno, tranq and the handheld shotgun are all great. The inferno's a good substitute primary weapon, and it can be good at wounding enemies by putting them on fire, for interrogations. The tranq is a one-hit knockout weapon, putting them into that 'wounded' state. I've only used it at close range distances, so I don't know if it's effective from further away. Similarly, the handheld shotgun is a beast at close range, but you have to be really close.

I've been using the uh... silenced machine gun as primary (last weapon on the list.) It's fucking amazing. Accurate as hell, tons of damage, and a big clip. For close range it just chews people up, and even long range it's very accurate. It's almost unbalanced in how good it is, especially if you fire in bursts of 4-5 bullets.

Unfortunately it chews through ammo so fast that you either have to keep scavenging for ammo or use the Supply body armor so your ammo supply goes up 4x. I like the blast armor due to its higher protection but Supply is necessary for the silenced SMG.

I use the fully auto shotgun as my secondary, it just eats people up close range. gonna try out the inferno shotgun next.

I wish I could use the default gun as my secondary, though.

Ok, the re-spawn locations is this game is probably the worst I have ever experience in a game, ever.

The amount of times I have spawned near enemies/ enemies spawned near me is crazy. Worst thing is an enemy spawning in-front of you and them having spawn protection, basically you die instantly.

Also, the melee is way too long and kinda pointless ( outside of interrogation). I have got shot off from enemies quite a few times when I tried to melee kill ( also, it would be fun if when you melee someone, the other person also gets a chance to do the swipe and who ever does it first gets the kill)

And yea, fuck the mantis thing, kinda ridiculous ( both using it and having it against you)

Melee kill from behind gives out enemy locations so that's quite an advantage, isn't it? You can always shoot the guy in the back in case you don't want to bother with melee.

(what you described in the brackets is exactly what happens when you try to perform a melee kill infront of enemy)

Why do so many players steal your melee/interrogation kills? It seems like every time I play, people on my team kill at least 2/3 of the people I'm 'swipe attacking'. It's so stupid. I mean with melee kills, I don't care as much, but with interrogations it is incredibly irritating, as it benefits not just me, but them as well. Especially if the current objective is interrogating players on the opposite team. I mean really, you'all give up points for a kill? You could even potentially get more kills with enemy locations known. I honestly don't get it...

I also don't understand how it takes most people so long to solve the vanguard capsule 'puzzle', but that isn't an annoyance- it's an advantage.

Also, anyone else finding that more often than not they end up carrying their team? Practically every match I play I'm in first place, and I generally have at least half of the points earned for my team. I notice the same thing happening with other players on opposing teams as well. What's up with that?

I had this guy on my team yesterday who followed me everywhere in the interrogator mode and killed everybody who was being interrogated or shot them down before I could sneak up on them. I left...
I always shoot the enemy if see someone meleeing because I can't figure out who's gonna kill who.

Uhm... That is what people are complaining about.

Not every time, but I also think its quite often that there is quite a discrepancy between the first and second on each team.

Having played the game at Gamescom, I have to ask: How do you get used to the controls? I played it probably a total of 20 minutes snuggled into those comfy bean bags at the sony booth, but man I couldn't get over how wrong the controls felt.

The graphics are mind blowing though, and it was a shame I couldn't get sound but those controls man... those controls. Gyro made it a bit better, but it's still far from what I'd call good. Something about the acceleration and input lag just felt massively off, regardless of settings.

Most controls are fine apart for the touch to melee which is bullshit for me. Maybe its because i am jittery when someone is close though :P

The game could have used a sort intro/tutorial though(well the beta part).

It is pretty good though.. i am trying to save money for the ps4 but i keep spending it. A good problem to have though. Day 1 for sure.
