• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

GTA V has gone gold.

The "horror" of it is from a journalistic integrity point of view. Before 2006, EA had a high budget for flying people out to play the games before release to get their reviews ready. It was an awesome program if you were in it... I was a recent college grad, a hair over 22, flying out to Orlando and Vancouver regularly to play videogames, go out to expensive dinners, and have basically a free videogame filled vacation. It was awesome. Except it made you put on rose colored glasses. Even when you're not being wined and dined, playing a game with the developers makes you overlook and not question things that should be questioned about a game... At least for me, there's a subconscious feeling to not want to insult these guys..

I think I might've missed some sarcasm in my last quote.

Stories like yours and the Gamepro Black Ops review only serve to solidify my perception of game reviews, sadly. The only reviewer I trust is myself. What sucks is, that significantly limits my options in terms of figuring out if I should buy a game.

Now, it's mostly trusting my gut feeling and trusting developers whose work I already enjoy. Kamiya, Inafune, Kojima, and so on.

When does the review embargo lift?

I wanna see comparisons between PS3 and 360 so I can finally decide what platform i can preorder this on.

Yep.

FWIW, EA discontinued their very lucrative, open program from 2006 after posting bad financials a couple years in a row. They had a lot of bad press following the jump to NextGen & the NFL contract issues from 2005 boiling over. The guy who managed the program stopped working at EA, and they discontinued it for a few years... Eventually opening up something similar but more exclusive and less ... offensive (from an integrity point of view) around 2008 or 2009. I haven't been in the program since 2007 or 2008 though so I'm not sure how it's changed. That was the golden age of swag, too. You'd walk away with tons of EA Sports merch for every game, meet athletes... It was something else. And, being an impressionable 21, 22, 23 year old... You'd go back to your respective website or publication and lather praise on the game, not necessarily on purpose (you'd have a good opinion of it, it was a controlled experience, and when you did find glitches they'd tell you they were working on them... and who are you to doubt it when somebody tells you that).

Rockstar games normally extremely close to the release.

i wanna know too.
embargo date shows how confident the company is..

Probably not till very close to release. GTAIV came out on April 29, 2008 and the earliest dated review was 4/22/2008 from OXM and OPM. The internet reviews by IGN, 1Up, and others, weren't until 4/27.

Worth saying -- we won't get any reviews until a week before at the earliest. The only reviews that might drop earlier will be magazines that have the reviews printed, nd they leak out before hitting news stands.

Pff yeah right if they do this bullshit again there will be no way to take these reviews seriously. It's gold, just sent a copy next week to your favorite and trustworthy reviewers and let them play it for at least a full week or something.

No they wont do that

Is this screen new? i don't think i've seen it yet.

I just want to hear about the framerate in both versions. Please.

My bet... around 30fps locked for both versions. I actually think the 360 version may lose out this time, but that's just because I choose to believe R* have finally 'mastered' the Cell and/or R* showing all PS3 gameplay of GTAV.

Max Payne 3 was extremely close, so I don't think we need to worry about GTA V on either platform.

And that's some sad shit because pirates will be playing it but reviewers won't be able to do it at their leisure?

Yep. Happens all the time, and ends up awarding those who have connections in the distribution or the nerve to dig up pirate copies for review. Last time I had to bite my tongue for something like that was for Black Ops II.

Worst thing was the tweet from devs who basically said "to pirates: if you play our game, at least tweet good things about it", while PR answer was "sorry, no review copy".

Isn't RAM the most important thing for open world games?

It's old, but still beautiful. Shows the recreation of the Salton Sea below. And "Love Mountain" or whatever that thing is called... the multicolored hippy thing on the ground positioned beneath the wing on the right.

Something it also shows is a two-seater plane. If there is a 40s/50s style fighter plane like there was in GTA:SA, I wonder if one person could control the guns.

GTA Online introduces a new spin on traditional character creation with the hereditary-based creation system. Select your character’s appearance by choosing your parent’s heritage, then use the gene dominance meter to dial-in which parent your appearance favors more. Additionally, you'll customize your character's daily activities - everything from family time to illegal work and sports to couch potato hours all have an impact on your character’s appearance and skill set (and you can always rank up your skill stats more via gameplay). As part of the Collector’s Edition package, you'll get Niko Bellic, along with both Claude and Misty from Grand Theft Auto III to use as parent options within the character creation system.

Liking the sound of the creation system there.

I love Trevor's canadian tuxedo

High end exclusive electric car:

(Petrol has been confirmed as NOT being in the game, or something you need to worry about btw. Leslie Benzies says so in the CVG interview. The electric car is probably for performance and aesthetics, IE, making no noise)

Stunt Plane Trials
Take in Los Santos and Blaine County at breakneck speeds in the Grand Theft Auto V Stunt Plane Trials. In five thrilling and unique challenges, you’ll zip through mountains, deserts, oceans, and cities as you navigate through a maze of checkpoints, each placed to push your Stunt Plane to the limit. Completing each Trial will improve the piloting skill of your character. Compare your times with friends and vie for the top spot on the leaderboard.

I am a sucker for shit like this. I loved the lfying school in GTA:SA, so I knew I needed this.

I'm hoping you can turn off some of the other special editiont hings. Like the extra 25% special ability and the secret guns at no cost. I feel like it might unbalance the game.

Bit disappointed at the custom characters that come with the collector's edition, I was certain it would include Luis and Johnny along with Niko since they they're the protagonists of the HD universe. Misty is a weird choice.

Yeah i'm glad i got the special edition.
I don't care for that car at all.
Those clothes look sweet though, and i'm curious to see the extra haircuts.

no spoilers? isnt this an in game commercial and hence be spoilerish if you trying to hold out on no content from the game before launch? weird

Broadly, it isn't spoilers. When an in-game commercial is considered a 'spoiler' (something that could spoil your experience of the game), then really anything could be a spoiler. Heck, the options menu is a spoiler.

Yep I'm sold. I love flying planes in games like this and going through checkpoints, reminds me of my days with Pilotwings 64 so long ago.

Yeah mad spoilers in this video *rolls eyes*.

If you've seen the trailers then there are no surprises in this video imo. Just some more footage.

Custom Characters for Grand Theft Auto Online (Collector's Edition only)

Weird, so you don't play as Claude or Niko but you can choose them as parents for your custom made character? Yeah no thanks, I will snap up the special edition though.

That GTA Online character creation system is taken straight from Sims. It's insane how many influences GTA V has.

I'm just glad that I won't see several Niko's running around. Hopefully everyone is pushed towards creating their own unique avatar, rather than trying to make characters from GTA or other games. The way this works seems to imply that you aren't going to be toggling sliders, and changing shoulder width etc. It's better than having presets, but it'll mean that everyone has to create a grounded character (so no Hulk's, for instance).

This game will receive a 96% Metacritic and all the score won't count for shit because of how predictable games writing is. I'll wait 2 months after launch to see if NeoGAF approves of GTA V when the dust has settled and the hype is gone. No other way to find out its true qualities. I'm still scarred from GTA IV and didn't like RDR either.

The fuck? Niko, Claude and Misty? There'd better be more characters. Though that creation system sounds cool. I do hope we have a large degree of control over appearances, though. They mention actions having an impact on it, but I don't want something like Fable.
