Reggie Fils-Aime on Xbox One/PS4 lineups: "Meh"

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong."

Go back 20 years and you'll hear the same thing.

Nintendo hit the IP lottery. If Sony and Microsoft came out here talking about "We've got Halo"/"We got Uncharted" after like 20 years of spin offs and appearances every year for the last 20 years, they've be laughed out of the room.

It's surprising how many people are hanging their hats on a F2P fighting game developed by a Western studio with a mediocre track record.

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon was developed by a Western Studio with a mediocre track record.

I expect KI to suck to

He's not wrong about the launch titles. For me, the Nintendo lineup blows away the launch lineup for PS4/XB1 this November. I'll still be picking up my PS4, DriveClub and Need for Speed Rivals, but nothing else really strikes me as a "must-have" title on those systems.

That said, I don't expect it to have any impact on sales and if they don't bump sales from these and Mario Kart, it's all over for the Wii U.

The PS4's launch lineup has more games than the Wii U has in a years time. And nearly all of the Wii U games are garbage.

It's very pretty. The problem is that it's still fucking Killzone.

It's actually a pretty huge departure from the rest of the Killzone series in a huge number of ways. I don't like the Killzone games and am pretty interested in this new one because of the massive changes.

Changes such as ->

1. A shift from extremely linear levels to open ended levels where you can tackle some goals in any order.

2. The Introduction of the OWL assistant, which allows emergent traveling capabilities with the zipline technique and unique combat opportunities.

3. A shift from mostly purely oppressively dark levels aesthetically to a mixture of super bright levels that run the color gamut.

4. A multiplayer mode which is supposedly going to hit 60fps, with all guns available from the start so no grinding for better ones, with all map DLC free of charge for everyone.

5. An enhancement in the player's agility/speed, and much endless tinkering to the way guns feel now.

Really, it's a completely different type of FPS experience now as far as I can tell.

He maybe has retro studios to claim some sort of hot success over. And instead of pushing them to create new experiences, they have been reduced to trying to recreate Rare 2D experiences from the SNES days.

Yes yes, Reggie is a mouthpiece blah blah blah

But the Wii U's lineup isn't exactly making me want to cancel my PS4 pre-order.

Eh, the launch lineups for both consoles are pretty shitty, I don't think he's wrong. The drought was terrible and I hated it but I mean, there's 6 retail games on the Wii U I still want to buy this year. I can't think of 6 total things announced for both of the new consoles combined that I really want. But I'm not probably the typical consumer they're aiming for, and I'm going to buy a PS4 anyway, so my opinion probably doesn't matter.

They're on record as saying they were given a choice to do either Metroid or Donkey Kong and they chose to do Donkey Kong on their own. They weren't "reduced" to anything.

I'd actually agree about the lineups being meh, but I thought the same of the Wii U's and I'm not typically impressed by launch lineups in general. Not pushing Pikmin back might've piqued my interest a bit though.

I am honestly SHOCKED at his arrogance. He just insulted the biggest games by EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Sony and MS. No wonder why wii U has minimal third party support.

C'mon now. Do you really think this is Reggie's actual opinion instead of just a PR quip?

I think Wii U has the best exclusive games this Christmas for sure. Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong, and Mario are better than any other exclusive line up. Problem is that is all Nintendo has. They don't have Madden or GTA plus other ports that are inferior.

"Reduced and Nintendo-age Rare" don't go together at all for me either.

And certainly "reduced and 2D" don't.

Prime 4 would not have been a new experience, I hope he wasn't going for that.

I think I'm done with GAF. This fanboy shit, Nintendo, Sony, MS, everyone, is too much. I just can't.

The internet would be so much easier if you take things in stride. Things will settle down a few months after these consoles are out. Before next gen announcements, this place was fairly tame.

I watched the Killzone gameplay video and wasn't impressed. It looks like something this generations hardware could do.

If you never played a single game this entire generation perhaps

seriously WHAT GAMES do people play on consoles that approach this? Last of Us and Uncharted 2/3 are probably the best looking games of the generation on consoles, alongside the God of War title, and they don't even come close to doing some of the effects on display in Killzone. And just forget about even comparing the image quality. Last of Us looks like it was passed through a fucking salt grinder it's so fucking jaggy.

The texture quality, the effects on display, the amount of geometry... seriously, I want people's magic consoles.

The line-up on PS4/XB1 is about equal to the launch line-up on the Wii U. All of them were pretty average. A first-party gem or two, some indie games, the multiplatform blockbusters, and a couple casual games.

This year is great for the Wii U though. Lots of exclusives and multiplatforms.

I'm just going to be honest by saying I have the same feeling.

Make no mistake, I'll buy a PS4 in 2014 when Rime and some RPG's/Sony IP's are out, but untill then, it's pretty 'meh' for me.

I already have a nice list with things I want to buy and play on my PS3 (Puppeteer, Beyond), 3DS (Pokémon, Zelda, Bravely Default) and Wii U (Zelda Wind Waker, AC IV, Mario 3D World) in the coming months ^^

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong."

Go back 20 years and you'll hear the same thing.

Ps4 and Xbox one of course innovate so much, with more Halo, uncharted, Infamous, and amazing new IP like drive club that is so imaginative.

People who complain about Nintendo IP are seriously strange, there will soon be more COD games released than there will have been mainline Mario/Zelda/DK/Etc titles, and if Creed keeps selling, same for that, but no one seems to complain about the homogenized yearly releases that stagnate and are creatively bankrupt. It's those damn Nintendo games that pop in every 3-5 years that are dull and soulless. Nintendo brings back Pikmin and funds Wonderful 101, people make fun of it, continue to play Creed or COD like they are the shit. Amazing.

Just because they have been around forever doesn't mean they are tired, as the changes in setting, tone, gameplay, etc are far more vast with most of Nintendos stuff. It's basically just NSMB that fell into the COD cycle and even that is a stretch release frequency wise.

I agree. But thats because Uncharted, God of War and most other IPs dont have the framework to remain interesting for 20 years ;)

If nintendo announced today that they would never make a main Mario, Zelda or Metroid game ever again, the internet would explode. The same thing can NEVER be said for Assassins Creed, GoW, Killzone or whatever

Am I praising Assassin's Creed or COD? I got bored with them within 2-3 games. People complain all the time about these yearly rehashes. However, the systems those games are on feature plenty of other quality experiences.

It's all about the experience.

The experience of being frustrated with the awkward controls of a gamepad
The experience of being frustrated with terrible battery life
The experience of yet another mario game

*Goes back to playing Super Luigi U*

To be fair if/when MS and Sony reach that time they will have the same ip's as long as they sell.
PlayStation will be 20 next year and none of the games from the PS1 appear on the ps4, very few appeared on ps3 and as a platform the PlayStation received the most solid selling new IP's of the three.

I completely agree with him. It's all about the games and the fun. And so far this year's games line-up is - objectively - the most appealing one.

Tbh, I think the Wii U's lineup is much stronger than PS4/Xbone this fall. A lot of high quality releases. Not sure if I'd call their launch games "meh" but definitely not as good as the Wii U's.
