It sounds like he handled it like the majority of comedians would have handled the situation. I don't know what it is about some people in comedy crowds who think anybody gives a shit about what they think, but DC probably worked very hard getting his set together only to have it ruined by a bunch of assholes who wouldn't let him do it.

It was essentially either do what he did or use the rest of his hour to berate the audience for being assholes.

I was at the Funny or Die show here in Dallas on Sunday, and Chappell was great and actually addressed this very situation. He was talking about Michael Richards and his memorable outburst at the Comedy Factory using the N-word. He said that he was really disappointed to see Kramer calling everyone the "n-word", because he is a fan of Seinfeld, but he couldn't blame him or hate him. He said the business is tough and sometimes he wants to just yell at everyone and call them the n-word. Sometimes comedians just have a bad set and get mad. He went on to explain that the n-word really didn't bother him, I'm fact he would be happy to give a personal cook job to Paula Dean. He said he and all his friends would be happy to have her call them the n-word and cook the fried chicken. He even said that the entire kitchen at KFC could be dressed as klans members for all he cares, but they better included every last herb and spice in that fried chicken! LOL!

I will tell y'all this, Chapplle was very mellow the entire time he was on stage and smoking a cigarette the entire time. It felt more like a humorous conversation with the audience than a comedy routene. He had just turned 40 the day before, and I got the impression that he didn't want to be seen as a big joke or something.
 
I saw Chappelle a few weeks back in Montreal. His skits were hilarious but we're frequently interrupted by moronic people. I think people said I'm Rick James bitch at least three times and some other shit from his show. It was so dumb and childish. There was even a marry me Dave!!! STFU PLEASE. I want to hear Dave not some fucking idiots.
 
If the club won't police the fans on their own, then the comedian needs to tell those people to leave on stage. If he tells them to get out and security does nothing, then leaving himself is a legitimate option.
 
I'd happily delete the rick james skits from existence if we could have Dave Chappell doing his shit more regularly.

I feel sorry for him hearing that shit all the time. Didn't he say people were coming up to him and his kids saying it at Disneyland? Cop the fuck on people.

I don't think you know what handling something terribly is like - just in the video alone he handled it calmly and professionally. If you think that was bad, you probably lost your mind when the jackass that played Kramer went on that racist tirade when he got heckled.

From the article and comments, the yelling started from the beginning, and he was on stage a whole 30 minutes before he called it off. I never get idiots that pay money to see someone just to act stupid and disrupt the show.
 
I was at this show and all I can really say is that the people at this show were a great example of why I hate this state.

There were a great amount of people inside (it was a semi outdoor venue) that came with a motive. They came to bark out stupid shit to Dave that has not been relevant for about a decade. They came to get drunk and heckle Dave. One woman right in front of the mic stand continued to plug her book all night to the comics. Once Dave grabbed the book about 15 minutes into his set, I knew that I just lost the opportunity to see a legend do his stand up. I've known about these walk offs that occasionally happen with Chappelle, but they always felt like stuff you think wouldn't happen to you.

The venue was full of Bros. The people up front had clearly never been to a stand up in a small venue. This wasn't a WWE show, your job as a listener at a comedy show is to...listen, laugh, clap. I fucking hate when people talk during a set. I understand it was a big venue, but have some fucking respect.

I was sitting on the lawn watching this all happen with everyone else back there. It seemed as if everyone up front didnt realize what they were doing. The lawn was completely silent and in shock. People stared at the stage with blank faces as people "inside" continued to heckle this man as if he were an animal. They were there to laugh AT Dave and not WITH him.

Sorry if my post is all over the place, but I am extremely embarrassed to be one of the people from this state that was inside that venue. This is something that will stay with me for a while as I have a great amount of respect for comedians and especially ones that have shown they have perfected their craft.

What the actual fuck is wrong with people. I've been to maybe 3 stand up shows and each time I just watched and laughed. You think the comic cares for your joke? Jesus...it's their show. Just...wow.
 
I went to a Chappelle comedy act in Wallingford, CT pretty recently street he quit the show and went to Africa spiel. He told jokes for maybe 20 minutes but people kept referring to the show and asked him why he left and what not. So instead of doing his act he basically did a 45 minute metaphor on why he left the show by comparing it to pimps and prostitutes. It was a big let down but it kept the crowd calm because it was still kind of about the show and it satisfied the curiosity of the people that kept yelling show catch phrases.

Yeah I've been to 4 now and I've never heard anyone yell anything out. Though these were small venues and the biggest name I've seen is Dave Coulier from Full House. Still though being in a bigger venue shouldn't be a license to be a dickhead nor should being star strip your right to respect.
 
I was at this show last night....the crowd was probably the largest group of obnoxious fuck tards that ive ever seen in a single building. If anything dave handled it like a champ and had every right to walk off stage, although i was pissed becuase i did pay a good amount for the tickets.
 
Fuck Comcast Theater security. They were probably too busy either standing doing nothing along the back fence or kicking out all the pot smokers. Useless bunch of twats

I saw him live this Summer. He is really damn good, but tells long stories that require him to get into a flow. Thankfully the crowd I saw was really respectful. Of course this was at a performing arts center that had several dozen staff members working the audience, asking people to be quiet and removing those who wouldn't be.

It was an awesome, though slightly non-traditional, set. I imagine people who only know him from his TV show could get annoyed by that.

I'd see him again in a heartbeat!

Damn, sorry dude, he was really great when I saw him, maybe you'll get another chance. He loved the Atlanta crowd, nobody heckled him at all, but at one point between jokes I did yell "we love you dave!" and he smiled and nodded. I also gave him a five at the end of the show.

People were hot boxing an outdoor venue. That shit blew my mind. I don't want to second hand smoke people's weed. I did enough of that in college when two of my suite mates was the college drug dealer (reason I ended up moving off campus).

Stand up comedy is not a fucking rock concert where stupid comments get drowned out by the next song. It's a monologue, not a dialog. It's a monologue that relies almost entirely on timing and the audiences aural engagement into what's being said. When assholes yell out the equivalent of "Freebird!", they throw off all of that timing and break the connection between the comedian and the people who actually want to listen to what s/he has crafted.

People that don't or refuse to get that astound me.

There are other guys out there with even more meme-heavy skits and even more hecklers and you don't see them crying on stage or walking after bombing one joke

I think that's the thing that a lot of people miss when it comes to etiquette at certain venues and performances. Like, you're not supposed to shout and cheer in the middle of a symphony performance, and during a comedy routine, your one job is to sit there and listen (because you paid for an opportunity to listen to this comedian). Hell, at one venue a while back, my friend ended up yelling out something, and the comedian tore the poor girl apart, figuratively speaking. Instead, some people like to treat everything as if they were at a rock concert or a wrestling show.
 
LOL at that dude on Twitter calling this a "crazy meltdown". Dave calmly said "fuck it, I'm out" and gently put the mic down.

Really sucks the show was ruined for everyone else. If only there was a way to filter out people like this. Some people have no common sense or simple manners. They should have been escorted out and money refunded if they couldn't act like an adult.
