Chappelle walks off stage

I know some people who went to this.

They said the yelling wasn't a huge deal and that they got pretty screwed over.

I'd be pissed if I went to this show.

I've never been to one of these shows, but what I've heard is that the heckling is much more disturbing for the comedians on stage than those in the audience, especially to those who aren't that close to it.

Apparently they only started shouting after Chappelle stopped and started smoking weed.

Basically...Chappelle made a big deal out of some guys talking in the front row. After he made a big deal out of it the audience got mad and started shouting at him to get on with the show.

I don't know guys

He came to Houston last week and completely bombed hard. I almost fell asleep during his set. After waiting 3 hours and listening to other awful comedians.

He talks about trials and tribulations for 40 fucking minutes.
Hes out of material..
 
A good comedian encourages hecklers? That's the first funny thing Moze has said.

Yeah, I love agonizing over jokes in my head, swapping out words, refining bits over months or even years, just for some assholes to yell shit during my set.

Just let comics do their job.

edit: being able to handle hecklers is not a judgment on that comedian being funny. It's a necessary skill because people are assholes. Most of my comedian friends would prefer to just perform what they were booked to do, not spend all night managing a bunch of children.

There were a great amount of people inside (it was a semi outdoor venue) that came with a motive. They came to bark out stupid shit to Dave that has not been relevant for about a decade. They came to get drunk and heckle Dave. One woman right in front of the mic stand continued to plug her book all night to the comics. Once Dave grabbed the book about 15 minutes into his set, I knew that I just lost the opportunity to see a legend do his stand up. I've known about these walk offs that occasionally happen with Chappelle, but they always felt like stuff you think wouldn't happen to you.

The venue was full of Bros. The people up front had clearly never been to a stand up in a small venue. This wasn't a WWE show, your job as a listener at a comedy show is to...listen, laugh, clap. I fucking hate when people talk during a set. I understand it was a big venue, but have some fucking respect.

I was sitting on the lawn watching this all happen with everyone else back there. It seemed as if everyone up front didnt realize what they were doing. The lawn was completely silent and in shock. People stared at the stage with blank faces as people "inside" continued to heckle this man as if he were an animal. They were there to laugh AT Dave and not WITH him.

Sorry if my post is all over the place, but I am extremely embarrassed to be one of the people from this state that was inside that venue. This is something that will stay with me for a while as I have a great amount of respect for comedians and especially ones that have shown they have perfected their craft.

This story also reminds me of Stewart Lee's recent show in Edinburgh under his Baconface persona. He wears a lucha mask with bacon on his face (duh) and plays the character of a Canadian comedian who rarely ventures out of his little Canadian town and thus all of his references are very niche. Lots of Rush. One show wasn't going well so he just called it a day after 5 minutes (with refunds offered). And that's Stewart Lee! Off of the telly!

So it was a meltdown .. smh.
 
I saw Chappelle's performance in Austin and can easily believe that he over-reacted to the audience and made things worse. Dave seemed to be really distracted by any crowd noise and security almost threw out one lady who he talked to until Dave told them to back off. I'm glad he did that but she wasn't being obnoxious at all and was shocked that security went after her. There was a really weird vibe during the entire show, even though he made it until the end.

Jimmy Carr doesn't pay his taxes so he doesn't count.

Who else? Lots encourage audience interaction but there's a difference between that and heckling. My American comedy knowledge is somewhat limited but the audiences there have always seemed a bit more... eager to be a part of the show. Usually just a drunk lad at the bar going WOOOOOOOOO SPRING BREAK or whatever.

How? Because a petulant child demands attention in the middle of a show? Any comedian who gets to regularly perform at clubs or theaters is already battle tested. They've done shitty shows in no-name towns getting heckled by 3 people who didn't even mean to go to the comedy show. They don't need your shit.

At best, heckling gets a good comeback where people can say "oh shit that was good!", but otherwise, it just derails or ruins a show for the rest of the audience who have the basic amount of self control necessary to shut their mouths for 45 minutes.

So you have to be dead silent in movie theaters over there or you're rude, but you can drunkenly shout random shit at comedians that are trying to do an act and it spurs creativity? Okay then.

Your theory also doesn't really work if 50 people are yelling shit out at the same time.

The "Hecklers are encouraged in the UK" thing is complete bullshit by the way. Why would you encourage someone to obnoxiously shout over your show.
