Titanfall - PAX Prime intro and gameplay

My hype for this game is starting to get crazy. Looks like a breath of fresh air after 3 years of CoD and it's influence on every other shooter from Battlefield to Halo.

The shooting mechanics are still essentially ripped from COD, which is unfortunate. The movement system and the vehicles (Titans) seem like a step forward.

It will be annoying as fk trying to kill people bouncing around all over the place..

Someone hasnt played unreal, quake, tribes, or any other high speed fps on pc i see.

Every FPS has a different gear of speed.

(1)Operator = ARMA
(2)7th Gen Standard = CoD, Battlefield, Killzone, Halo
(3)Oldschool = Duke 3D, Doom
(4)Arcade = Titanfall, Team Fortress 2 as Scout, Quake 2
(5)Sanic = Quake 3, Tribes, Half-Life + Tau Cannon
(6) ?

This is the most excited I've been for an FPS since Halo 3. And that's some high praise.

I think you can only use the smart pistol against AI.

You can't make it out in that video, but every time we have seen it used previously, the score that comes up for the kill is equal to killing AI opponents.

Face, you know my stance on ADS mechanics in this game.

Sigh.

I think it works against other players as well. The "Tactical" class has the "Smart Pistol" as the primary weapon, the "B3 Wingman" revolver as a Sidearm and the "MGL" as an anti-titan weapon.
In my opinion this class would be to weak against other players if you only could use the sidearm against them.

Someone who was/is at PAX could probably shed a little bit more light on it...

Not sure if serious

Couldn't say unless I actually played it. I just have a mental image of a city style sandbox map with people all bouncing wall to wall like bunnies lol.

You might not be that far off. :D Now throw in some mechs stomping down the streets and the vision in complete!

Amazing. These ex Infinity Ward guys definitely know some things.

They killed it with COD4 and it looks like lightning might strike twice.

I'm really hoping TitanFall manages to keep its identity and doesn't go the way of COD. As long as they keep the same dev team on it and with EA's 3 year development cycle I think it has a shot of not devolving into what the COD franchise has become.

I was really excited for this when they first unveiled it, but each time I've seen it since then my hype has dropped exponentially. I'm just becoming more skeptical each time, and not really feeling the art/visuals. 3 classes only? Plus wall running will be neat at first, but you're going to get a bunch of idiots finding new ways to grief teammates by doing nothing but "doing laps" around the map via this mechanic and not helping at all.

3 loads-outs for humans and Titans in the demo. Like any new mechanic in a game, some people will just mess around with it. Like bunny-hopping or dolphin diving, some people like to mess around and have fun/jerk around. Not sure how they get around this, other than the NPC's doing more work.

I feel like I'm on everybody's ignore list or something. I explained the smart pistol on the first page of the thread. One thing I'll add from the recent Gamersyde preview, is that the lock-on shuts down when you're hit by returned fire. It may well still be OP, but it's not as crazy as it first appears, you have to keep players within the large reticle, and remember they all have jetpacks.

Ahh interesting. I did not know that. I am sure it will lead to some crazy kills, but knowing you can knock someone out of the lock-on is handy.

Titanfall could have been truly epic with some BF-like physics. As a titan, being able to smash down buildings or straight up walk over smaller things to crush them. Oh yea.

But why would they include that in the game, when people get all giggedy giggely blushy over it as it is now? I sure ain't at least.

These kind of "ugh, such low expectations" posts are becoming a favorite of mine.

Destruction is a cool mechanic, and I can see it working in a game like this, but come on... It's not something all games should seek to implement, nor would it be a clear improvement to the experience. You could have picked a better example of something that may have been added to the game, if only people weren't so easily pleased.

Game is 6+ months away. 3 for pax.

Also there are ways to be an idiot in every mp game.

So.... about that "Smart pistol" - it can be used against players:
The smart pistol isn't OP, don't worry. Everyone moves so fast and there is tons of color, plus it takes 3 seconds for it to lock on to other players. You have to be very sneaky for it to be effective

I'm not sure if I agree with this poster - on the one hand yes, 3s is a lot of time in such a shooter - on the other hand it still requires no/less skill compared to a normal weapon...

Well yeah, that's possible I suppose having AI address this.

Yeah, there's always pre-determined ways to grief your team in shooters as is, let alone having this new mechanic in with people doing this as well. My hype for this is just dying down I guess, becoming more skeptical. The original unveiling knocked my socks off though, which is weird.

It was this and Destiny I was excited for when first shown each. Now I'm just still hyped for Destiny.

I asked on Twitter if we could get a Direct version of the Tutorial video and Vince Zampella said.

Okay, so Smart Pistol is really a novelty when used against other players. Maybe akin to an execution in Gears or knife in BF3, where you have to expose yourself for several seconds in order to get a kill.

The TTK in this game is probably less than a second, 3 seconds is a long time.

Sweet no killstreaks.

The Killstreak is just getting your Titan slightly faster.

There is one thing that's the same as CoD in play here....

Return of the Jelly

It's not as red as in MW2. It's definitely a lighter spread. But the jelly is there.

I like jelly rather than a red flashing screen like Treyarch does. The whole screen when shot flashes red and it is so annoying.

Exactly. AI is pretty much just standing still here, human players would have shot the guy and cancelled the lock-on. It must also be limited by range, so you will have to close the distance to use it. It's not like people will be aimbot sniping from the other side of the map.

Just to continue with what I was saying about the Smart Pistol. It seems like an embarrassment weapon.

You expose yourself for a period of time to kill someone that is essentially standing still for 3 seconds. If you are standing still for that long, then you aren't playing the game correctly and need to be punished.

Wow. Looks amazing.

Yeah, I was just going to hold out for the PS4 version to play with friends, but I may have to get the PC or Xbox One version at launch and play by myself for a while until I double dip.

Looks fun as hell.

Some screencaps and observations.

Pilots:
Assault

R-101C: Meduim Range Assualt Rifle

Tactical

ji293fhaZL6gq.png

Smart Pistol: Can lock on to enemies to string together multiple kills and take down enemies from impossible angles.

MGL: Magnetic Grenade Launcher

CQB

EVA-8: Semi Auto Shotgun
Archer: Rocket Launcher

Observations:
- Good selection of primary and anti-Titan weapons.
- Cloak is the only Special Ability seen so far.
- Attachments and mods are barely used.
- Is the ‘Militia’ a possible third faction?

Atlas Class Titans:

Main: ‘Battle Rifle Titan’

X0-16: Battle Rifle

Vortex Blocker: Create a small magnetic field that can catch bullets, missiles or grenades and send them back to the enemy. Hold it too long and it will cause damage to your Titan.

Heavy

40MM Canon: Semi explosive rounds.

Electric Smoke: Hides your movements from the enemy. Any Titans or Pilots who go through the smoke will be disoriented because of the ellectric shock.

High

Does anyone know if there are bots?

There are bots running around the field at all times.

If you are referring to playing a multiplayer mode solely with bots instead of other players, it hasn't been confirmed.
I do doubt that inclusion though. From what we have heard, Respawn is using the dedicated servers to control the AI routines.

Thanks TheOddOne.

Looks awesome. Kinda wonder what their Attachments and Mods are for weapons? I wonder if it will be simple silencers etc or are they going to go a bit more hi-tech?

I also noticed the Titans get them as well.

Shooting mechanics aren't the problem with CoD, it's the perks/killstreaks which this doesn't have.

3 years? huh?

game looks like decent fun but not really revolutionary IMO. still looks and probably feels like a shooter where you control a floating camera. looks kinda ridiculous when wallrunning etc. Half-Life 2 was the last game for me that i was ok with feeling like you controlled a floating camera :/ first-person games NEED to make you feel like you are controlling a body, a character, instead of just a camera with a gun attached to it. yes even multiplayer. but that might be just me, oh well.

i bet you can't even see your feet if you look down lol.

I meant the Call of Duty influence on other shooters didn't really hit until 2010 when you could see it in games like Bad Company 2 and Halo Reach.

At E3, I wasn't impressed by this and I don't know why, but now I feel like this game is gonna be huge! PC version gonna look amazing.

We'll be making a version to release to the wild that shows/explains what people have been playing at Gamescom/PAX. Don't worry guys :)
