Analyst: If Xbox One Tanks, It Could Be Microsoft's Last Console

Not gonna happen.

Would be sooooo happy if it did, though. MS has played their role and things would only get better if they dropped out, IMO. PC gaming would improve and it would help out Nintendo quite a bit, I think.

You seem to know business very well, so much so that you think the Halo IP is worth only 1 billion dollars.

I dunno, Halo sales seem to have plateaued at the 8-9 million copy sold per installment, doesn't seem to be much growth there.

care to share how much its worth?

I would edit that if i where you .
mods will insta - ban you if they see it.

Last Xbox?! The Xbox One isn't even out yet. -_- I think these people need to talk about how the WiiU is Nintendo's last console, not Xbox.
They do. They have. They've done it so much Nintendo's practically dead already to them. They need a new target.

<Sigh> It's Labor Day weekend.

It seems almost impossible for the Xbone to tank. I don't think even the most pessimistic analyst is giving it any chance to tank.

Apple TV was at 13million in May. Roughly half were from the last year, so they have been picking up steam since the redesign and resolution bump.

Imagine what would happen if they had a 32GB Apple TV for 149 or 199 and it could play all official controller supported iOS games when iOS 7 launches.

It could be a great experiment for them, one that could see sales continue to multiply.

People keep talking about the official Apple controller for iOS, except that it is more likely to be a niche product for a niche fanbase, namely people who want to play their mobile games with buttons rather than the touchscreen. If Apple TV actually ends up playing iOS games, then I would suspect that most games will be played with a touchpad like Sony's Dual Shock 4. It might have buttons but it would likely look more akin to a merger of a remote control, a touchpad, and an NES controller. It won't be the familiar Dual Shock design that most game consoles have used.

There is an interesting article on Gamasutra on this, maybe someone will find the link, most of the other Halo apart from Halo 3 have not really moved too many 360s last gen, they have actually lost the players interest in the franchise after Halo 3, its been a downward trend

Halo: Combat Evolved 6.43 million
Halo 2 8.49 million
Halo 3 11.78 million
Halo Wars 2.34 million
Halo 3: ODST 6.16 million
Halo: Reach 9.44 million
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary 2.17 million
Halo 4 8.38 million

Halo 5 might be able to boost the sales for X1 post launch, but I dont know for how long it will hold on

Two completely different situations. Nintendo is a video game company. They make money off of video games. They don't have shareholders who want them to get out of the video game business because if they do that, what else is there? Nintendo is in the video game business for the long haul and can survive this generation being the loser and maybe even make a little bit of money by the end of it. Also, 3DS profits will make up for any losses incurred by the Wii U.

Microsoft is not only a video game company and the vast majority of their profits come from OS licensing and enterprise business. The Xbox division loses money for them but in the past there have been advocates for it in the company as something of a loss leader in order to get into your living room so to speak. But a bad showing in this gen could be all she wrote for MS in the video game world and they could drop it easily and be more profitable with their other ventures. You see how quickly they dropped the Kin and Zune.

HALO 4 ONLY SOLD 8MILLION...MICROSOFT IS DOOMED!!

Nintendos last console? You know they have a ton of cash and are making profits again thanks to the 3DS?

When Wii U becomes profitable... They will make another mountain of cash.

They need games, that's it...I will plunk down my money for a Metroid or LoZ game..

yep. plus now they aren't doing so great with windows 8, windows RT and windows phone. Their shareholders may think they should focus on their core products before continuing to chase after the damn living room again.

HALO 4 ONLY SOLD 8MILLION...MICROSOFT IS DOOMED!!

Its largely the same people who bought Halo 3, Halo Reach, Halo 4 did not move any units neither did Reach. They have roughly 70-75 million consoles sold by the end of this generation, only a minor fraction of those have actually played Halo.

I don't think it has to tank. I don't think it will tank. It could even be fairly successful.

If Microsoft feels that the gaming division isn't profitable enough compared to their other ventures, it's entirely possible they'll decide to pull the plug.

I'm not sure Halo moves systems anymore. Lots of people disliked Halo 4.

hypothetically say this happens...could anyone see Nvidia making he jump? the have the shield now, thats like a toe in the water in terms of making hardware...just a thought.

I guess the same for AMD too. Why not just 'go direct' with their tech?

just a thought.

This is about as far from right as you could be.

Official image from Apples official supported controller layout for iOS 7 devices. Literally it's the only thing missing to turn on games and add some more flash memory to a new apple tv.

When these devices are available in the next month or so, it's practically flipping a switch for apple. The idea that they would do some other touch pad or weird controller for apple tv only is wrong at best.

MS dropping out is unlikely, but with the twin earthquakes of the reorganisation and Ballmer resigning, it can't be ruled out entirely. That said I wouldn't bet on it. I mean, they're still in phones, and their market share there is laughable.

Halo 5 will move systems, I'd reckon it will atleast move 5-6 million units of the X1 broadening their base. Subsequent entries in the franchise might not, it will a smaller set of players who have bought Halo 5 will buy into the other entries in the franchise.

I'm honestly way more concerned about the Xbox division in general than I am in the Xbox. I feel like it's going to do fairly well, PS4 may be off to a strong lead in mindshare, but it's hard to say what will happen as the games start to come out.

Both offer such great compelling experiences, I hope this is not the last generation for Xbox, or at least for console gaming.

Hasn't the Xbox brand continued to fare better and better since it's inception?

Market share has increased dramatically.

Xbox Live Gold is a figurative goldmine.

The console has thumped the competition in the world's biggest market for about 30 months in a row.

Why all the doom and gloom over a brand that has been on a steady upswing? Yeah, Xbox One has been a PR disaster, but we still can't count those eggs until they hatch.

care to share how much its worth?

The Halo series sells between 6-10 million every time a mainline game releases. If another company not named Sony or Nintendo bought it, the series would be expanded to 2 other platforms and likely consistently sell at least 10 million copies. Factoring things like shelf life and price drops, dev cost, other fees, it's safe to say the series can pull 400-500 million each release. Which would mean a publisher could probably make a billion dollars back within 2-3 years of releasing games in the series.

Businesses do not sell things like this due to the value of one release, they do it based on it's general power and potential. The Halo series on 360 probably made MS 1-1.5 billion alone and that's not factoring anything outside of the 360 releases. No company would be stupid enough to sell something like Halo for what would likely be the profit amount of 4-5 years of development time at most. They would sell it based on how much it can make over decades and come to an agreement based on something more fair I imagine.

Something like Mega Man is probably worth less than a billion dollars these days, but even that amount probably wouldn't pry it out of Capcom's hands anytime soon. MS could likely sell the IP to a company like EA and make more money than they ever lost on the Xbox platform.

Sega was once a powerful console brand. It doesn't mean anything. If the board decides it doesn't want MS to be in consumer, then they will get rid of Xbox.

Xbox is not a goldmine in any sense of the world. You can't just look at Live profits in isolation without considering the billions MS pours into the business. Because then the picture isn't so nice.

Why would the board want them out if MS makes tons of cash on xbl?

AMD is the current vendor of choice for all three, so they can guarantee a profit no matter who wins.

Nvidia's in-house CPU tech is extremely limited, though I suppose they could go to IBM or wait another few years for high-end ARM to catch low-end x86.

In many ways, this COULD be the end of the line for consoles. At some point, it will be easier to give everyone a thin client machine, and have servers be the real consoles.

Services like Gaikai and OnLive will really take off once we get great broadband penetration in the US.

Universal broadband penetration in the US would require a massive works program the likes of which this country hasn't seen since we built the highway system in the 1950s. Given this country's broken, polarized, and corporatized political system there's no way Congress reaches a consensus to make this happen anytime soon. And there's no profit for private corps to make it happen. I'd say barring a political miracle the dream of all digital delivery and thin clients will remain a dream for the next decade at least.

Why would the board want them out if MS makes tons of cash on xbl?

because of the giant losses they took because of the original Xbox and the RROD disaster .

Investors want to see results of profitability year one .
if the X1 doesn't satisfy them .there will be pressure from them to close it down.

In the last 6 years, my internet speed went from 10mbps to 75mbps for the same price.

Here in Austria it went from 25mbps to 150mbps for the same price, which is half of what I paid for 25mbps (Cox) in CA and there's already an option to upgrade to 250mbps.

I think worrying about broadband looking forward is a bit shortsighted.
