Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | September 2013 | Token Indie Thread

PS+ is a subscription service that gives you game downloads each week for the various Playstation systems and discounts on digital game purchases in the PSN store. It also lets you store your game saves in the cloud for backup. You can buy games in the psn store without PS+ but without the discounts.

You will need the memory card for media storage and downloaded games as well as saves.

So are those weekly downloadable games free? And do I get to keep them after I download them? Sometimes it takes me a long time to get through a game, so if it's like a library in which I only get a week or whatever to beat the game then I might be screwed, right?

Well, the games are FREE as long as you are still a PS+ Member. You can just "purchase" the games for free and once it is in your download list, you can download them anytime you want.

That's good to know. The touchscreen feels really responsive but I don't like the idea of smudging my grubby thumbs across that lovely. I'm sure I'll get over it though.

The overall feel and ergonomics feel great to me to be honest. I doubt I'll need a grip accessory.
That said, after putting 50 hours into Fire Emblem on the classic 3DS in the span of two weeks, every device I hold instantly feels more comfortable than that did.
I had cramp in my thumb for a week afterwards.

I found the d-pad controls for DKCR3D borderline infuriating at times. There was just something ever so slightly unresponsive about tbe movement in that game that often resulted in death.
I haven't played any other platformer for the 3DS so maybe it was just the game and not the hardware that caused it.

3DS may have some really lovely games but lawd, I hate the hardware :(
but okay shall not comment on it further!

get PlayStation+ if you haven't and games like Guacamelee!

You get to keep them for as long as you are a subscriber. They are free in the sense that they are included in the subscription price, like netflix. You must add them to your download list and you will then have access to them to download again later if you delete them. If your PS+ subscription lapses, you will no longer be able to play the free games. However, if you later renew it, you will be able to access all of the games on your download list. Any games that you purchased with PS+ discounts are yours forever.

Anyone else having an issue in Machinarium where the cursor kinda flies all over the screen or seems to move on its own?

Are my analog sticks messed up?

Does anyone else have issues where the system will just sit there saying "Preparing to download... Please wait.", more or less infinitely? When I cancel, the whole system just sits there faded like it's then stuck canceling forever. It keeps happening to me at random times and it's really starting to frustrate me.

Well, shit.

I was planning to join Vita GAF in about a month as a birthday present to myself. And then my PS3 died yesterday. I feel like I've invested too much in my PS3 not to have one, and I'm dead set on getting a PS4 on day one. That would mean I'm buying three consoles in the space of two or three months.... That seems kinda nuts. I'm fortunate that I can afford it. But I think I'm going to put off getting a Vita until Black Friday. That will at least allow for plenty of remote play impressions from actual users - something we still don't have at all, other than a few Sony people insisting it's "flawless."

Nope, never heard of it.

Sounds like an egregiously crippling bug, you must be imagining that a multibillion dollar corporation is capable of such an oversight.

Well it's good to know I am not alone I guess. It's just frustrating because I'm trying to re-download all of my content, and it's no fun having to restart the system five or six times in the span of an hour.

Aye, I kinda went off on a tangent there.

I got a 30 day trial for free with the console. I figure I'll redeem that when I get a memory card and upgrade to a 12 months sub when it runs out.

Use the webstore download queue.

What happened to the Sly Cooper Trilogy on Vita? Was it ever confirmed to be coming, or was it all based on the ratings board website showing it? Would be cool to have it on Vita, I have finished 1+2 but never played 3.

It's never been announced. I think the ESRB just goofed.

and get a 32GB memory card while you're at it :P
haha it's worth the price to save the hassle

Instead of Epic Mickey, I think they should have ported Disney Infinity. That kind of game is pretty popular these days (although I found them the most despicable form of DLC ever. Well, the second after retailer specific preorder DLCs.).

Infinity is a pretty unreasonable game for SCE. They'd have to ensure compatibility with all the toys and manufacture toys and portals for the starter kit.

You should get the GTA V bundle in a couple weeks, that's a great deal at $269 with a 500GB.

VitaGAF, can we PLEASE get this game on the Vita?

Their twitter account mentioned that if there is enough interest for Vita/PS4, they would consider a stretch goal (:

@BluePlusBlack PS3 is stretch goal already, PS4 / Vita we'd love to but only IF we hear enough interest and can make the money work. Thanks!

I just tweeted them with a #MightNo9VitaPS4 hashtag!
please get it on :D

EDIT: I tweeted @yosp, @giocorsi and @shahidkamal
but I'm sure more can be done :D

That is exactly my plan, friend. I'm a bit tempted by the current UC3 bundle because that also has a 500GB HDD and comes with a year of PS+. But I've already played UC3 and I do want to check out GTA 5.

I'm actually kinda lucky. I had a 1TB HDD ready to swap into my 60 GB console, and so I had *just* finished backing up all of my PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 game saves ONE DAY before it died. I returned the HDD unopened, and I'll just get an all new console that will hopefully last many, many years.

Anyone here planning to become a member of 1st wave PS4 players?

I think I am gonna buy one eventually, but not really sure about being 1st adopters. Lower price, better hardware designs, issues streamlining, more choices in games/SKUs.... late adopter seems to have so many better reasons than 1st adopters.

I know I'm late to the party, but I got my Vita today. I still haven't picked up a memory card (price cut be damned, they're still too expensive) and I haven't got any games for it yet so it's little more than a paper weight at the moment.

After the initial set up, I've a few thoughts on it.
-The analogue sticks feel flimsy. I haven't used them in a game yet but they don't seem to have much range of motion.
-The shiny plastic on the trackpad feels "cheap" in my hands.

That makes me sound really negative already, doesn't it?
I do have some positive things to say about it.
-That SCREEN. I don't think I can take my 3DS XL seriously after gazing at the Vita screen for 5 minutes. Incredibly crisp.
-PSP and PS1 backward compatibility. I've only had a flick through the Playstation Store, but I can see myself picking up MGS: Portable Ops, Killzone Liberation and FFVI.
-Vita games! Spelunky, Guacamelee, Muramasa, Dragon's Crown, Soul Sacrifice, Tearaway, Issac Rebirth, Ys... so many games, so little time. I don't think I'll be able to keep up with them all.

Welcome to Vitagaf.
I am actually surprised so many mentioned they had problems at first with the analog sticks. Sure, they are small and have a small range but considering that they are real analog sticks on a handheld they are just godlike.
Loved them from day 1, no circle pad bullshit anymore.
Reading the impressions of the others, I think you will be fine with them after playing.

I bought a PSVita yesterday to prepare for Ys and picked up Metal Gear HD and P4G. I also got two 16GB cards.
So I was told that having two cards is good because then I can create an account tied to another region. I've already read the post that's linked in the OP for how to switch accounts, but I'm not sure what the bonus of having another account in another region is. Is it so I can download games from Japan (for example)? But if I can't read Japanese, does that kind of defeat the purpose?
I bought my PSV in Hong Kong and I already have access to a good amount of Japanese games but decided to skip out on them since I don't think I can enjoy them fully without being able to read the text. I'm assuming that the PSV will be fine if I buy games for it back when I'm in Canada, since I'm playing English versions of P4G and Metal Gear right now?

Also, should I sign up for a PS+ account? I'm not sure what that does exactly, does that just let me buy games from the Playstation Store or something? What's the difference between that and just buying the cartridge in a brick and mortar store?
Also, the games I bought require memory to be played, this is just for the save files, right? If I actually want to install the game onto my memory stick then I need to download the game from the Playstation store?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is my first Playstation console and I'm not sure what I'm doing exactly.

Welcome new Vitabro.
There are differences in content between the regional stores. Asia seems to be getting indie games late but on the other hand they get some japanese games earlier.
My account isn't from that region so I can't really comment, there are some asian Vitagaffers around here though.

The same goes for PS+. From my perspective, it didn't seem like the asian PS+ offerings are as good as the western.
Still, the service delivers great value and I can only recommend subscribing. Maybe you should consider for which region you register your second card and to which you subscribe with PS+. Europeans get better "free" games with PS+ but the Americans get better discounts/sales.

Contentwise, Americans get some retail games earlier or even exclusive while Europe gets some indie stuff much earlier.

To be honest, personally I am not a big fan of region switching. As I said before, can't say anything about your region though.

If I had any feeling that PS4 is going to bomb (hence dropping in price soon after launch, and even that isn't guaranteed with a company as stubborn as Sony), I wouldn't even think of buying it at launch.

But whether you buy it at launch or next year, you're getting damn good value for your money. And all signs point to a fairly steady stream of quality post-launch software.

Join us.

Day one, my friend. I'm incredibly excited. I can't wait to stress test Remote Play.
Does Remote Play only work with local Wi-Fi (i.e. both Vita and PS4 in the same network), or would I be able to also use my Vita to (let's say in a hotel room with Wi-Fi) play games installed on my PS4 at home?

We've only heard local so far. If I were to guess, maybe local only at launch and public WiFi later? Even if public is there at launch, latency will obviously be an issue (distance is always going to create latency). It will be interesting to see how it fares.

Local-only makes the most sense, I suppose. As great as it'd be to control my PS4 from a continent away, I doubt Sony would bother implementing it since the gap in quality between local and public would be too wide and leave the whiners with something to harp about. Even though a half-assed solution is objectively better than a complete omission, it seems that Sony gets more flack than most for its occasional jank.

Personally, though, it'd be massive for me. I travel somewhat often, and it'd be amazing to have Demon Souls 2 anywhere with a Wi-Fi network. Plus it's one way to differentiate from Wii U's off-screen play.

Honestly, I'd guess local wifi (ad hoc really, I *think* that Remote Play will actually not use your wireless network, unless it's as a backup maybe) at launch and over Internet never. Sony will get Gaikai up to usable latency long before they can serve your Vita frames from your home PS4 and back in time to make anything other than a turn based game viable.

And if Gaikai lets you use your Vita to play PS4 games from zee cloud then I think that will have to do. And really that alone would be incredibly impressive if/when it happens.

Yes. Mine has been paid off since late June.

I'm the number 2 reserve preorder at my Gamestop. Hell, I watched the Sony E3 conference in store, so I would be ready to preorder as soon as the Sku went live shortly after.

I want it ASAP. Yes it's more costly, less options and stuff, but...it's the new gen newness. As all of GAF focuses in on next gen, it'll be neat to actually participate, not kicking my own ass on the sidelines by waiting.

Is saving the money worth the months or years, you could already be playing the system, when it begins on 11/15?

That's how I see it, I'd rather pay more and play right away, than wait - for however long - to save some money. All those months are wasted waiting, when I could have been playing a PS4 + PSV.

Not just saving money, but hardware revisions as well. I am also rather wary about the probability of 1st adopters riddled with probable various issues all around.

Ah well....

I didn't have a problem with my day one Vita. Still looks and feels like brand new. Love that little bugger.

so how's Kickbeat?

btw the Vita has no (good) games argument is falling apart!
Based on Metacritic (lol), Vita now has 62 games in green compared to 3DS (60)
http://www.reddit.com/r/vita/comments/1lkqg2/the_vita_62_finally_overtakes_the_3ds_60_in/

Really damn good.

It got an 8/10 on Destructoid (I think it got held back from a higher score because you have to play through the story mode 4 times to unlock all the content. But a dev from Zen Studios told us in this thread that a patch is coming out to unlock a lot of it from the start)

Omg I just picked up a Vita + Killzone with a 16gb card, I'm so excited to try it out.

So I'm going to set up the US account and grab a ps+ sub from Amazon. Do they just send a code rather than the card, and if so how long does it usually take? If it takes a while I'd rather get it from somewhere who give you the code quicker.

I'm now part of Vita GAF, to be honest I never thought I'd be saying that ;)
