Random Person's Tumblr says anonymous Sega Rep says Yakuza 5 is never happening

While I was at PAX this past weekend I decided I would try my luck asking an official SEGA rep (who were currently promoting/demoing both a Sonic game and Project Diva) whether he knew about Yakuza 5, a game which was released in Japan in December 2012, and if it was ever coming to the US.

He said, “I know a lot” in a somewhat strained manner. After pressing him a bit more and prompting with questions about possible roadblocks, he essentially said that there were currently no plans to take it on.

Unfortunately he said that there weren’t very many fans like me, and if they did decide to localize it would be a long time before we would see the game released here in America. In addition he specifically admitted that the lengthy localization process would not help. However, the way our conversation happened and the way the rep carefully chose his words, it seems like there are bigger issues.

Considering how much I enjoyed Yakuza 3, 4, and Dead Souls (all available for PS3), this does seem like a big blow. I hope they are just hedging their bets and perhaps will revive this series soon.

Aaaaand this is why I always support my favorite game series by buying new.

SEGA should just run a crowd funding campaign for it. I would gladly contribute.

How much would it cost realistically if it is just text localisation?

Literally the worst publisher. I don't even...

I've never seen a publisher more uninterested in doing their jobs than Sega.

As much as I love Yakuza

This was expected, and they're right.

What terrible news. In a just world these games would be coming here no questions. But in the real world yakuza 5, pso 2, vc3 are kept sequestered from the west.

You guys best hope that the rumor about Sony assembling teams dedicated to localizing games is true, otherwise this game is never coming over :/

Why not just kickstart a localization?

Fucking seriously. Say "OK, PS3/PS4 digital version, subtitles only", charge $X,000 (not even gonna guess how much a job like this is worth after the Skullgirls debacle), and if they don't meet the required funding limit then Yakuza fans will have to shut up forever.

Just bite the bullet.

Well, great. The last Yakuza game we get is that abomination, Dead Souls. If Sega's using that as sales/interest data, then, they can get lost.

Goddamnit.

Not surprising at all. Just look at the NPD numbers. This series should be faaaaaaaaaaaaaar bigger than it is, but in the end, it's a niche franchise. Dead Souls was doing worse numbers than stuff like the Atelier series. They should have skipped it, the game killed Yakuza in the West.
