Sounds like hell to blast through story as dps... mainly for those story required dungeons. ifrit must have been torture because you are stuck in that room.

I don't think they've specified yet, though I'd like to ask what everyone thinks is a fair amount of time to idle before getting kicked? 30 minutes seem fair?

I hope they never tell us and secretly change the time on each update. Keep people on their toes and not thinking about AFKing for long periods.

They have no plans for a Steam version.

Drats. Likely will come eventually, but I can see them waiting a while to get a good user base on their own payment system.

Was there any sort of trail? I also heard something about that if you found an unused copy of the first release of XIV, you could activate it and make use of its free time, or is that just misinformation?

I do not understand why Yoshi is so against a setting in the DF to select party members from your own server. Servers need their own identity and community. The lack for every the option works against that. =/

30 days of free play, 1.0 players has until 9th or so (but with the added 7 days it foes beyond that)

Man, that was HARD. Took me several tries until I finally got a good group. MT knew what he was doing and DD killed the sisters fast enough for me to not get oneshotted.

No drop for me, but yay!

If you don't care to gather, you could always farm materials that are valuable to crafters that can't be obtained except as drops. Just because you hate crafting doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware of what sells on the market. FF and similar MMO was never about making money through selling trash items that WoW is famous for or even simple gil reward. That kind of influx of money is what ruins the economy and why games need to find money sinks to take them out of the world.

Just be glad that making money is a lot easier in XIV than it ever was in XI. You don't even have to buy your spells or arrows to progress, lol.

Right but the thing about FFXI that make it simpler to make gil was the fact that you can sell crystals and other high demand items (bee chips) for insanely high amounts of gil. In this game you have t be a botanist or a miner to farm these crystals.

I'm concerned that everyone will be force to take up a craft or a gathering class, which I fear will force that part of the economy to collapse on its own.

I'm kinda dreading hard mode Garuda after doing normal mode.

I haven't found it to be that bad. I guess if you want to rush through the story as quickly as possible it might suck, but there are plenty of things to do while waiting for the queue.

Ok, did the first dungeon, the one you do by yourself. How in buddha do you keep on a target when multiple are around? It keeps unswitching to nothing being a target after I attack a target.

Being a tank feels like a very thankless job when people blame you for everything.

Good thing tanks have instant queues on the duty finder!

It and healer are the most thankless jobs in any MMO. It just depends on what game and what the character ratios are.

Tanking in this also requires you to think like a DPS because those enmity grabbing skills are limited. Gotta deal damage to hold it well.

Screen shots time!
Oh and Shadow Blade of Ultros, I took a shot for you cause I think it was cool with the sun glaring like this.

Playing this game on my Macbook Pro running Windows 8. Its not all that good (get about 23-29 fps) but I may get a more powerful computer for gaming.
Running it on low settings too. =(

From what I've heard, they regret even putting FF11 up there due to some sort of politics, and aren't keen on putting FF14 up at all.

Not only politics. Since steam games go into a different folder than normal, it gave them issues with expansion releases.

They couldn't release the Seekers of Adoulin expansion for FFXI as standalone for 'technical issues' and owners of the steam FFXI version had to rebuy the new edition (FFXI:Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition). They remedied the situation by putting up this edition for the same price as the expansion alone for anyone who previously bought the game on steam.

Then, you had to reinstall the whole game if you wanted the new expansion (unless you just torrented the files or you got the physical edition, etc)

This happened to me which is how I know. I assume they don't like dealing with this in the future now.

It's got a point now with the main story quests where I'm half a level behind and I have to go grind FATES for a while to unlock the next one.

Anyone else experience this?

if you do regular questing and grab a fate here and there when they're right next to you, you should be okay. that's what i did and i have quite a few quests left at level 50. dungeons help as well. i ran them a few times.

It seems like there are a lot of people completely new to MMOs in this thread and as part of the FC.

There's a pretty big difference between someone who's played a bunch of MMOs walking into a dungeon that he's never done before and one that a new player's never done before, because even though the vet's never seen the content, once something happens, he'd have seen something like it hundreds of times before, and so already knows how to respond. Even though what is going to happen isn't predictable, the correct response is immediately available. New players don't have that context, and it's the same for any game or genre.

Yoshida's goals with Guildhests and early dungeons was to try ease new players into the genre and teach some basic conventions, but I'm not sure how effective that is. Partly because I don't think the tutorials are all that descriptive (and not everyone reads all of it), and partly because the majority of players are still highly familiar with MMOs, enough to carry 1-2 new or bad players in groups.

But the only way to learn is to do it. Exposure and experience is the only way to get good at it and be comfortable, so find FC groups, make and invite friends, or use the DF. But keep running dungeons.

One of my favorite things to do is to go in blind, with no one having checked a guide, and figuring out the encounter. I enjoy that kind of puzzle-solving progression.

The hests are highly ineffective as a teaching tool because there is noy sufficient time to reqd the instructijns that pop up (and they differ from the dity finder instructions)

lack of mobbing as a gladiator until end game plays big too.

Gotta be tabbin' wackin' comboin' a lot.

Tera Online was such a good game, where the party isn't helpless when the tank or healer dies. Since in essence you could avoid all damage regardless of class. So the tank and healer don't hold all the responsibility when there is a wipe. Sadly the end game content was terrible.

Anyone have any idea on how Bards are and if they are common? I quite liked playing (and being really good) a specialization that was a little more rare (and tough to play) to see in The Old Republic and as such I was thinking of trying something a little different in XIV. I was playing a Ranger in the beta and I enjoyed it, so if I pick this up I'm thinking of sticking with it and trying out the Bard but I wonder how that plays out.

pretty sure class quests are suppose to teach you about something... or that's what someone told me the gladiator ones would. I still think i ended up playing more of a dps role in those though.

I was pretty tired last night but decided to do one more castrum run before I called it. Crazy speedrun tanks that failed to take adds off of the healers made me leave real quick. :lol

They seem to be lifting the character creation locks and putting them back up randomly. Main reason I know because I'm trying to make an alt on Ultros.

For instance. Sargatanas was locked early yesterday. unlocked late last night. and now its locked again. I wish they would tell us what was going on.

Boy do I love this game. Ever since the patch I've had zero issues. I get in instantly at any time of the day. Only a handful of crashes (these happen when I play like for 5 hours + at a time, and usually during cut scenes. Not sure if this is a memory leak or what.). However, I'm just having a blast. I haven't enjoyed an MMORPG in a long time. The music is great. The missions are fun. I love the world design.

Could go on and on. So happy.

I use one of the extra mouse buttons beneath my scroll wheel. These are the ones that are usually mapped to the browser functions of Forward and Back. I use the one closest to the scroll wheel and it works extremely well.

This is close to what i ended up doing. Got my G600 in yesterday and theres an extra ring finger button on it that can be re-assigned. So I stuck that to the DEL button since DEL doesnt do anything in FFXIV so Im all good to go. Much easier than trying to PTT with the same hand that I press abilities with.

It's easier with a macro to do your combo because you don't have to press as many buttons. Macro, Tab, Macro, Tab, Macro, Macro MACRO MARCO!

is there a guide on how macros work in this? Never actually messed with macros in a mmo ever.

Or could you just copy yours here? I probably can figure it out in a glance.

I think for now I'm not using a macro fo the GLD combo, but is something I might change not so far in the future. I already have a macro for the mitigation skills that works wonderfully

Makes you wonder where they were hiding Yoshi P leading up to this project...

I seriously want a documentary created about the history of Final Fantasy XIV... telling it all, from the beginning of 1.0 development, to now.

I think that would be a great project for Gametrailers.

wouldn't that be a bit inefficient though? It shouldn't be too hard to keep aggro on the mobs that dps aren't hitting.

so if 3 mobs where mob 1 is what everyone is wailing on.

mob 1 -> 3 hit enmity combo.
mob 2 -> fast blade, savage blade.
mob 3 -> Halone

repeat.

So when I reach 30 as a Pugilist. Do I start up Lancer or keep grinding till 50?

I don't know if lancer 15 is required anymore to start the job quest, but I suggest doing that becuase you'll get a couple of useful skills and shouldn't take that long.

Then do the Monk quest and lvl to 50.

Anyone can farm the various crystals and shards, kill the elementals that are in every zone, the drop rate is high.

Well she said politics made even FFXI something they regret so that probably just buries it further, and honestly the only reason it even matters here is because you want to be able to spend Steam credit on the game. It needs to activate and be bound to an SE account so in that regard Steam would be no different from Amazon or GMG unless Valve wanted to intrude and demand more, and therein lies the (probable) problem.

By the way, any tank tips or good resources on how to be a good one? I'd like to think I'm doing an alright job (about as alright as one can when juggling targets with a controller anyway) but I'd still like to read/know more so I don't screw it up in some stupid, obvious-to-everyone-else way.

It works like FFXI so it's pretty simple.

/ac "Bio II" <t>
/wait 2.5
/ac "Bio" <t>
/wait 2.5
/ac "Miasma" <t>

is my basic debuff combo for starting with ACN/SCH/SMN

I do it for crafting too so I don't have to press as many.

/ac "Inner Quiet" <me>
/wait 3
/ac "Great Strides" <me>
/wait 3
/ac "Steady Hands" <me>
/wait 3
/ac "Advanced Touch"
/wait 3
/ac "Great Strides" <me>
/wait 3
/ac "Advanced Touch"
/wait 3
/ac "Great Strides" <me>
/wait 3
/ac "Advanced Touch"

That's my quality macro replacing the touch with the one that's appropriate for the level you're at.

You can adjust the wait times as well. You'll want a fraction of a second after your recast to allow the macro to fire off successfully. My current recast is like 2.43 or something like that so I rounded up to 2.5 to do it properly. You can also hit an instant casting ability in the middle of the macro and it'll continue doing it as long as it falls in that wait time.

Can't really macro with Dragoons. =/

If you have a set combo attack with Dragoon, then you can macro it. Monk has a lot of stance changes and I just bundle them up into single combos, for example.

wouldn't that be a bit inefficient though? It shouldn't be too hard to keep aggro on the mobs that dps aren't hitting.

so if 3 mobs where mob 1 is what everyone is wailing on.

mob 1 -> 3 hit enmity combo.
mob 2 -> fast blade, savage blade.
mob 3 -> Halone

repeat.

So you can reduce number of inputs from 6 to 3 by rolling up 3-move and fast/savage into one macro each though. Automating it also gives you time to keep an eye out on other things like HP and threat meters plus it gives you time to select a target next while the combo is proceeding.

Pretty much. I was on the phone with a friend and I mindlessly killed a few water spirits. After 7 minutes, I had 10 water crystals. Farming that stuff is super easy.
