So is there any way to change the poll? I'm curious to see how many people are planning on staying after the free month. I know a lot of people pick MMOs as their "new game" and play it for its free period and then drop it, but I really want to see what percentage of the GAF community I can actually expect to see in the coming months.

I'll be done with the game after the first month only because there are way too many games&new conoles coming out in the fall. I am sure many others will do the same

I was able to log in after work last night immediately with no queues or errors O_o

I've been levelling a Conjurer and am up to 25 but decided to go ahead and get Arcanist to 15 for the upcoming White Mage thing at 30. I have a couple questions that I haven't been able to figure out. Does being White Mage mean I change from Conjurer to White Mage or do you stay Conjurer with that as a "sub class"? Also, how do abilities work? Do I keep all of my Conjurer ones and just get new White Mage ones to go along with it?

Also, levelling Arcanist to 15 has been harder than I expected. I got to 10 pretty fast but at that point (in Ul'Dah area, Western Thanalan) I ran out of quests to do. I did some leves, then tried joining a couple fates but ALWAYS seem to ride up to them just as they are ending. Then I tried grinding on mobs and wow that's going to take forever. What do you do on these alt levelling classes to level? I hear FATE groups which I have not done yet but are there any other options for me? It's been a bummer to sorta hit this wall where as with my Conjurer I've been questing and doing dungeons the whole way up with none of this "what do I do now?" stuff.

Oh and thanks for all the macro posts. I'm going to be incorporating a lot of them into the game tonight after work. Right now I really have just been using 1 to heal me if needed and that mouseover heal which is nice.

When you do the White Mage quest, you'll get a soul crystal that can be equipped from the Armory inventory thing as long as you're a conjurer. You can just take it on and off as you want. You keep all your conj spells afaik, and gain the white mage specific ones, as well as losing some cross class skills (I think anyways)

For leveling arcanist, I just did fates and the hunting logs, took me like 1.5 hours to hit 15.

I was wondering, are there any penalties for switching classes early on? I remember the game saying something like 'okay, you can go ahead and do any class you like now, but for the best experience we recommend you max out your first class first!' or something. Why would they say that?

I really hope they release the details on their plans for transfers before they open them. I want to try and coordinate with friends so we end up in the same place, but depending on how they do them, there could be no point in doing so.

Its the decision to do SLI. My last SLI was 460..never again.
Ya, fuck that. My next GPU will be a GTX 880, I'm never going to fuck with a dual-GPU card again, it's been quite a hassle to get the results I expect out of a card I paid over $700 for, especially with the 1.5GB of VRAM they "falsely advertised" as 3GB.

In hindsight, I should have bought two GTX 580s, instead. Even regular SLI is considerably better than 2 GPUs on one board, that shit has been a nightmare.

Even when my game is straight locked 30, never wavering, not even dropping to 29, the game is stuttering like fucking crazy on PC. I have it locked at 30fps, but it looks like I'm dropping down to 10-15 even though the FPS counter isn't moving.

I can't explain it, I've never really seen anything like it in a game before. Maybe it's shitty SLI support, I have a GTX 590. There are some parts where I'm running around and it's stuttering and jerking so bad it looks like less than 10fps, but the Fraps icon in the corner still says straight up 30 (and so does the System Configuration menu in the game, if I open that up).

Driving me nuts, I don't know if it's anything I can fix or if I have to wait for a patch or drivers. :/

Same exact thing happens to me on my single gtx 680. When it starts stuttering, I cycle SweetFX off and then back on (F12 twice). Usually cleans up the stuttering.

I don't think they've specified yet, though I'd like to ask what everyone thinks is a fair amount of time to idle before getting kicked? 30 minutes seem fair?

30 minutes seems to be the norm in my experience. They start booting idle players and implement an actual queue system and they should be golden. Queues are annoying, but at least then you can just walk away while in queue instead of spamming 0.

I subbed for 180 days.

Only thing that will take me away (read: lessen time played) is GTA5 and busy season for work (February - early April).

There is no penalty, but it's only a recommendation to guide you through the story with one class, while learning the mechanics and such (imo). You can switch classes when you're able to whenever you feel like if you want to try something different.

Okay, cool. I started a Lancer but I already miss playing as a thauma, don't want to go through the entire intro again though, so I'll just stick with Lancer for a while and change to thauma later.

You get an exp bonus on the lower leveled class as well, so it helps a bit to switch later as you'll level faster. I'm not sure if it crosses over between DoW and DoM classes though.

What is it that you are most scared of? Teammates yelling at you?

Everything. I did the first two dungeons no problems. The tank in Sastasha even helped me a lot, about aggro and all. But when you are an aggressive dick right of the bat, it affects my mood and it affects my gameplay.

Look I don't even play FPSes online that much. I won't be yelled at, by some dudebro online. So yeah, a game like this is basically the first time I seriously play a MMO and that one experience I just had, is severely affecting my enjoyment. WoW never forced me to play with people I didn't know.

Then again, I don't know anyone in-game.

It seems like there are a lot of people completely new to MMOs in this thread and as part of the FC.

There's a pretty big difference between someone who's played a bunch of MMOs walking into a dungeon that he's never done before and one that a new player's never done before, because even though the vet's never seen the content, once something happens, he'd have seen something like it hundreds of times before, and so already knows how to respond. Even though what is going to happen isn't predictable, the correct response is immediately available. New players don't have that context, and it's the same for any game or genre.

Yoshida's goals with Guildhests and early dungeons was to try ease new players into the genre and teach some basic conventions, but I'm not sure how effective that is. Partly because I don't think the tutorials are all that descriptive (and not everyone reads all of it), and partly because the majority of players are still highly familiar with MMOs, enough to carry 1-2 new or bad players in groups.

But the only way to learn is to do it. Exposure and experience is the only way to get good at it and be comfortable, so find FC groups, make and invite friends, or use the DF. But keep running dungeons.

One of my favorite things to do is to go in blind, with no one having checked a guide, and figuring out the encounter. I enjoy that kind of puzzle-solving progression.

Planned for next week:
AFK kick timer
more new worlds and server upgrades
splitting duty finder some more (more battlegroups?)

Coming later:
free server transfers from high pop to low/new worlds (NOT the other way around)

I guess it's necessary for their infrastructure, but splitting up the duty finder even further seems like it'll make wait times worse. I was originally convinced that they would be the same as before after they split them, due to probability/averages, but I've had to wait quite a bit longer than before as a healer, and I expect it's even worse for DPS as well.

Yea, I lucked out and grinded the first 3 dungeons multiple times to complete the Foestrikers set for my archer. A majority of the time I was grouped with competent players that played their role effectively, but the moment you get a player with a poor attitude it really sours your enjoyment and the fun.

I tend to try and be friendly and helpful for new tanks that need a little push so they don't just act as DPS(especially often in these initial dungeons which act as training), but not all members are as kind. Seen a few really touchy in-fighting in chat and name-calling. Thankfully nothing close to what was posted in the last few pages. Just a lot of "hey tank, don't roll duty finder until you understand how to play your job!" from more aggravated party members than myself.

Again, prob luck but most of the time it's been good experiences. About to do Ifrit though...worry this is where the real madness may appear with PUGs.

I'm also getting somewhat concerned that there aren't really any ways to generate gil once you're done with the story and most of the quests. Crafters are raking in the gil right now, which is unfortunate if you're someone like me who absolutely despises crafting in most MMOs... but I'm not sure how long that will last once people realize the money you make levelling is pretty much what you make. FATEs give less gil than they take to repair your gear (Like <100 gil for a level ~50 fate? wtf?), levequests don't give much, dungeons give almost nothing... I guess they expect everyone to levelling the majority of crafting (and therefore gathering) classes that way they can repair their own gear, but considering it costs probably around 4k+ for a full repair for me at 50, there isn't much I can do outside of playing the market and levelling a crafting profession to keep up with those costs.

Meet people.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but where do I go to check how much free time I have remaining on my account? Bought the PS3 version off of PSN prior to launch and played during early access.

Yeah, I had to wait a few minutes when I was looking in the DF for Darkhold. And I'm a tank who usually means 3 seconds of wait before the split. I want to think they split the groups considering a more equal and balanced number of roles so that's why I have to wait more and DPS (maybe) will have to wait less....

I hate jerks too and stay away from competitive games for that reason.

Luckily for MMORPGs I almost always play a healer. And this time my friend is playing a tank. So if anyone is being a jerk we can just drop out and instantly get into another group and those jerks can wait another 2 hours in their DPS queue.

I would offer to have you play with us but I'm in a different world and even if we were in the same world I have very sporadic play times and most people hate that.

This is a major concern for me. I despise crafting. And to make it worse, to be self sustaining (so as not to have to buy stuff from people which kind of goes against the gil making thing) you need to level every single gathering and crafting class.

I feel long term this will be the thing that pushes me away from this game.

Has Ultros opened up new character creation yet? Someone on Reddit posted that Gilgamesh reopened character creation about an hour ago, but there's no Square Enix announcement about that. Is there an easy way, outside of the game, to find out when character creation reopens on a server? Obviously the Lodestone isn't as up-to-date as it could be.

I agree with you. If they don't put in any alternative ways to make money (like grinding dungeons or something) then the economy will probably turn me off the game the most.

Last night was the longest I've had to wait as a dps in the duty finder, it took just over an hour before it matched me up with a group for Toto-Rak. It actually listed an average wait time for the first time I've seen (24 minutes).

I could be mistaken, but I don't think it has changed. All the high population servers periodically open up for new character creation (I assume based on the current online population). You just have to be lucky enough to get in during that window.

I saw the same thing, as I'm trying to get a friend on Ultros as well. She still hasn't been able to create new and she's been trying for the past day (I've yet to hear anyone that's rolled since yesterday's lock).

sometimes you meet nice people that want to farm the same dungeon with you in duty finder. we need a replay dungeon function for that. has this ever been suggested?

It cannot be emphasized enough that if you are new to MMOs but you want to play this, you must get yourself into a good Free Company.

Don't hide yourself in the corner of the world with three of your friends, two of whom can't ever be on at the same time.

Join a decent sized FC filled with like minded folks and you'll have a much, much, much better experience.

Horror stories about Duty Finder groups are irrelevant when you have quick access to a friendly tank or healer at any hour of the day, you'll have people to answer questions, and you can support each other with your crafting skills.

And as far as DF specifically goes, don't be afraid of it, even if you are solo queuing. There are thousands of players in the queues, thousands. If you have one bad group, move on. You see bad DF groups posted here because those are memorable. The average ones that go perfectly fine but nothing too exciting happens, those don't get posted.

On balance, slightly bad groups are probably more common than really good groups, but really awful groups aren't the norm either. Most are average - maybe a good player, maybe a bad one, but a few experienced players in general.

Always look for party members on your own server via shout/yell first before you use the DF. That way if they are great, you can friend them, and you expand your social network on your own server. If they suck, whatever, move on or blacklist.

i'm already responding to local shouts, but they're rare. doesn't help when you get "use duty finder" replies.

Yes I noticed many servers locking and unlocking this from early yesterday to late last night. No msg was posted either. I guess I'll just keep checking. I really hope they open it soon.

If you don't care to gather, you could always farm materials that are valuable to crafters that can't be obtained except as drops. Just because you hate crafting doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware of what sells on the market. FF and similar MMO was never about making money through selling trash items that WoW is famous for or even simple gil reward. That kind of influx of money is what ruins the economy and why games need to find money sinks to take them out of the world.

Just be glad that making money is a lot easier in XIV than it ever was in XI. You don't even have to buy your spells or arrows to progress, lol.

Good stuff.

I would also like to add, that in the case of DF, you can often be partied up with people new to a particular fight/dungeon. If things don't go well early on, make an effort to explain the mechanics or offer advice. We all had to learn at the start. If they are genuinely trying I always stay. Have only had a couple cases where the person refused to listen (Tanks not using flash, being the primary problem).

It's got a point now with the main story quests where I'm half a level behind and I have to go grind FATES for a while to unlock the next one.

Anyone else experience this?

What does everyone use as a push to talk key for mumble, etc? I set mine to DEL because I dont think it does anything in this game. I hope not.

I use one of the extra mouse buttons beneath my scroll wheel. These are the ones that are usually mapped to the browser functions of Forward and Back. I use the one closest to the scroll wheel and it works extremely well.

Question about Pally tanks, do they not have the same aggro gen that Mau/Gla have? He was single targeting each mob to get aggro, which is why I ask.

You had a terrible tank. Flash is more than enough to hold multiple mobs, especially with access to Shield Oath at that level.

I've seen lots of people say it, but it hasn't happened to me yet and I'm 46. Got the main story at 43 or 44 at the moment. I do dungeons fairly often, though. I pretty much only do FATEs to get minions if I can help it.

I know this will change once I start leveling a second class, though, which makes me sad.

Eh. I won't bother. The character on PC wasn't even all that high level, probably under 10. I'll just keep the character I have on PS3 as my main, and buy PC version when it gets cheap. I already cancelled that account due to frustration. I'll bite when its $20 or so, no more. Already paid $40 for PS3 version.

Thanks for trying to help though man.

If you already own 1.0 you can't even register a ARR key.

I agree with you. If they don't put in any alternative ways to make money (like grinding dungeons or something) then the economy will probably turn me off the game the most.

What I see is that theres a lot of things taking out money from the server (repair, market fee, teleports..) but not enough incoming of new gil. I wonder if that can be a problem in future years for non-crafter players (or players in general).

The game doesn't need any more money sinks when the amount of money an additional player brings into the game is almost finite.

If you don't mind putting in a minute amount of work (5 levels) you can just sell shards with mining or botany.

After all, all those crafters making bank have to have them. Put 100-200 up at a time and they'll sell within 10 minutes. Went from 600g to over 20k in 10 minutes selling shards I had on hand.

Any word if SE is going to distribute the game though steam in the future? I have $140 in my steam wallet, and sort of wanted to have the option to pay for a sub with it.

I don't have one set up. I have the audio threshold setup so that it doesn't turn on unless I'm talking. It's worked out so far for me based on how it's set. If I end up talking to someone in my room or something similar, I just throw a switch on my headset to mute my microphone.

Ahh dungeons, that might explain it. I haven't run that many only when I've had to through the quests. Maybe I should run The Stone Vigil a few times heard the last boss drops a pretty good weapon for each class.

And yeah leveling a second class is gonna suck, grinding FATES constantly :/. Should be a few quest hubs which I haven't been to yet though.

Just happened to me, since the next main quest jumps from 46 to 49 and I'm 47.
