Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | September 2013 | Token Indie Thread

Just received my review copy of Dragon Fantasy: Book II! If anybody has any questions about the game, feel free to ask and I'll see if I can answer them.

Like I said, I just learned another new method last night I'm trying to perfect. I'm debating on posting better HOW-TO's for people with pretty pictures and what not.

Shopkeepers can really be the hardest enemy in the game. Perfectly strats against them is a lot of fun.

Also getting the shot gun early and taking advantage of the shotgun jump is pretty amazing and lucrative.

I'm very happy btw :)

Yes. I think the Spelunky faithful in here would appreciate that greatly!
I know I would. I'm all about becoming a space-marine with the jetpack and shotgun that I end up dying somewhere in the Jungle if I'm lucky (I think I made it to the Ice once...).
I still haven't beaten the damn game. Let alone City of Gold or Hell.

Don't like taking control of Murphy in Rayman Legends, any idea if you can switch the control to the triangle button like in the PC version?

I keep saying the only thing that would make the Vita version perfect is this. I hope they sneak it in the patch for the missing levels, but I'm not holding my breath.

Someone tweet it to Ubisoft or post it on their blogs/forums!

Query:

Are there any good metroidvania games on Vita at the moment? I'm really in the mood for one.

Again and again people ask this.
Again and again the answer is the same.
GO BUY GUACAMELEE AND THANK US LATER.

Guacamelee is the obvious answer because it's awesome and it's a "traditional" metroidvania, but if you think you could like a peaceful(you can't kill the few enemies that are no more than moving traps) and very atmospheric metroidvania that never tells you what to do and how to do it(it's a very good thing because it forces you to use your brain a lot... without puzzles!) and that the more you play the more YOU(not the main character) become better and skilled without a single tutorial then try knytt underground.

Batman is coming too.

alright, good to know. I'll look into starting this tonight.

once you get passed the black market and make it out of the jungle, the ice caves is actually pretty simple unless you want to go to the mother ship.

the temple isn't bad except for those stupid F'n crush traps. Was going to easily break my high-score-record last night when one of those came from the bottom of the screen and took out all 8 of my hearts instantly. dumb thing was I couldn't even see it until it was too late :/

if you want to extend your runs, play conservative, map out your route, and when in doubt, bomb the hell out of it.

I did find out a another nice piece of information. in regards to the kali sacrifice altar, she will give you one of 8 items, including spike shoes, jump shoes, cape, compass, gloves, etc.

if you already possess these 8 items, she will always give you the jetpack :-D

ranking up 8 points nets you one of those 8 prizes (or the jetpack if they are all collected). Ranking up 32 points nets you 8 hearts (instant bonus)

So Is it the 16bit retro game to Dragon Fantasy: book I's 8 bit retro game? Does the battle system take risks (think Chrono Trigger/Action time Battle system), or is it styled like Dragon Quest (similar to the first one or Lufia 1 on the SNES)?

Not available for another month or so, but Arkham Origins Blackgate is supposed to be a metroidvania game and it's being made by a good team (guys from the original Metroid Prime Trilogy), so I'd expect it to be a good game...although WB isn't giving it a lot of press...

Hey, I wonder if anybody could fill me in on a few details.

I'm planning on picking up a Vita next month. I think it's an obvious choice to get a years subscription to PS+ to go with it, so my question is, will the 8 gig card that comes in the Mega Pack be okay? Or is it worth just shelling out for a 32 gig card from the get go?

Regarding PS+, is there a place to check what games are available with the service? There are a bunch of games I am interested in, but I don't want to go out and buy them if I can download for free.

Get the 32, I thought 16 was enough but with the Killzone patch being a gig alone...

Atelier Mururu (great game) is 3 GB. thinking along these lines further - I don't want to keep (or have to be) deleting PSN, PSP, PSone and indie games. I've gone primarily retail as well, with 24 games from retail.

Also: I'm a sad panda. Nobody helped me out with my Vita back up inquiries, and so, I'm at work worried it'll burn into the screen the backup progress. I mean someone has to have backed up their Vita before today? :(

I feel like the forgotten Vita member

is it a good stand alone snes rpg ... or is it a generic snes rpg that piggybacks off of nostalgia.

welcome to the best that it gets...for now.

I'd say it's a good standalone SNES RPG. It has a lot of homages to other indie games and RPGs too.

Right now the PS3 version stutters when it auto-saves and loading a Cross-Save on the Vita version stops you from battling, talking to people, and saving. There will be a day one patch to fix some of this. For some reason, the review copy isn't downloading the patch so I might just stop right now and wait until I can download that.

I've had a 32GB since launch and I don't really sing its praises anymore. I recommend people get the 16gb. You don't save any money per GB by going to the 32
at least in the US anyway, the 32GB card is 2x the price of the 16GB card
and over time, you'll fill up the 32 anyway, probably with a bunch of games you aren't playing anymore. 16 gigs is more than enough to house a good mix of "AAA" and indie games and, if you have a PS3, you can just keep all your other games on the PS3 hard drive for easy transferring when you wanna swap one out.

Guacamelee.

Knytt Underground is pretty bad, to be honest. I regret paying $14.99 for it.

Don't worry about it. I backed up my Vita overnight when I got my 32GB card, and I suffered no burn in in any capacity.

I think I'm going to buy the Sony Pulse headset and use it for my PS3 and Vita.

Reckon it's worth it?
It's a great headset. I'm hoping the next Vita revision has support for it built in so you can use the extra audio features and wireless functionality.

Knytt is fine (I did get it for free from PS+ though, not sure what I realistically think I'd pay for it). The third chapter (chapters one and two are little more than the tutorial) opens up an unbelievable amount (seriously, it can be overwhelming). If you can get through to the and don't mind the style (or can ignore it) it's a proper metroidvania that leaves you almost completely to your own devices.

So Is it the 16bit retro game to Dragon Fantasy: book I's 8 bit retro game?
Yep! New character models, new battle system, and it now has side quests.[/quote]

Does the battle system take risks (think Chrono Trigger/Action time Battle system), or is it styled like Dragon Quest (similar to the first one or Lufia 1 on the SNES)?
From what I've seen so far, there are no risks when battling. It's your standard turn-based affair except you could be facing around six monsters at once. If there is a monster nearby, he'll also join the battle.

We don't know when Rayman Origins will be free on PS+, right?

Correct.

Deus Ex: The Fall, 2K Racing, pretty much every major EA phone game and now Call of Duty: Strike Team show that SCEA's third party relations team is likely one of the least proactive gaming companies. Vita's third party situation is horrible, especially in regards to the west, so expecting exclusives is a pipe dream. Vita's hardware isn't capable enough to do straight ports without heavy optimization which is unreasonable to expect from a lot teams given they're juggling development on 3+ SKUs at a time. But the big name phone games from separate teams that are only pushing 1 or 2 versions that run on base hardware incredibly similar to that of Vita's? SMH. I don't know how SCEA thought it was a good idea to let Vita go calendar 2013 without a Madden, Need for Speed, or Call of Duty when there were ways to get them on the hardware. Are phone ports ideal? No, but it's better than the alternative that we have now, which is nothing. The worst part is that I guarantee things like Call of Duty and Deus Ex would've been worth the effort. Scratch that, the worst part is if we bitch loud enough SCEA might get them ported a year from now for $15 a piece. You know, so proactive...

A few pages ago there was a discussion regarding Square Enix and their digital support. With Kingdom Hearts it's been theorized that Square Enix licensed the Disney characters at a time when digital releases were uncommon. This would explain why Birth By Sleep, Dream Drop Distance, and 1.5 HD Remix aren't on PSN/eShop. It also explains why 1.5 HD Remix isn't on Vita, as all games on the platform require a digital release. Square Enix is going to have to change their contract for KH3 if that's the case. Both PS4 and Xbox nOne require the same for all retail releases to be available digitally. As for Crisis Core, it's believed to be an issue with an ending song. Said song is available on the physical OST but mysteriously missing from the digital versions. SE probably doesn't feel it's worth their time to hire a progammer to remove the song and go through Sony certification as well as rating boards just to have a PSP game on PSN.

Optimism around PS Vita is growing, says Sony

The UK team has seen sales of Vita increase 100 per cent during the summer, partly thanks to the launch of its Mega Pack.

UK boss Fergal Gara told MCV that the firm will not forget Vita in the ramp up to the PS4 launch.

Sony says there will be 900 Vita games by the end of 2013.

“The ability to play all 32 PS4 launch titles using Remote Play does a lot for the Vita catalogue,” said SCEE boss Jim Ryan.

100 percent over nothing is still nothing.

I'm really not a fan of SCEE including PSP, PSone, TurboGrafx, and PSMobile games in their Vita list. That's like saying in 2006 that PS3 had the best game library in history because it can play PSone and PS2 games. smh

i think the wow factor of how significant it is has worn off since you've had it for almost two years now?

i think 16 is the minimum someone should have regardless of 95% retail or not. the benefit of the 32 ( and hopefully larger) though is that your entire library is with you at all times, hence the point of all digital. its an amazing feeling having any game in your library at your fingertips for wahtever mood youre in.

the tidbit you have to watch out for is to make sure you're out of room on your card due to games you own, not ps+ games. because if ps+ ended for me today, I'd have about 25 gbs left. which would be completely pointless in me buying a bigger card anytime soon.

Take a deep breath Takao.

The real reason all those games exist on iOS and not the Vita is because the money is over there and its not worth bringing over here.

It makes zero sense for Sony to pay EA or Activision for ports that do nothing.

And yes I would rather have no support from the large Western companies than the garbage EA tries to sell as new products on the Vita.

If you can get through to the and don't mind the style (or can ignore it) it's a proper metroidvania that leaves you almost completely to your own devices.

I played about 15+ hours on Knytt, and for me, my problems with the game are significant:

1) Larger doesn't actually equal "better." The map is huge, that is true. But most of the map feels poorly designed and unnecessary. I'd rather have a tightly designed, compact map, than some sprawling expanse where most corridors end in dead ends. There was never a sense of accomplishment when completing quests, and while I appreciate the lack of handholding, at it's core, there should be a sense of progression that you can latch on to.

2) The story was pretentious, high school caliber anti-religion/establishment drivel that hurt the game more than it tried to ad some depth and gravitas to it. If the game had no narrative at all, it would have served it much, much better. The characters you meet are annoying, with bland, uninteresting dialogue and "quirks" (god how I hate the fairy companions that follow you around).

I stopped playing the game after that 15 hours when I finally got to the point where I couldn't stand to read another line of dialogue from the characters, or back track through an area one more frigging time, only to be reminded, "Oh, yeah, I can't reach that area yet because of reasons."

I feel like if the map was half as big (or smaller), and the "story" was excised completely (or at least the dialogue; maybe keep the core background, and have the player character find tablets/monuments/journals that describe the world and previous events), the game would have been so much better. Visually, it's nice looking outside of the "faux-anime" characters, and the controls are solid and responsive enough.

I bought it for $15 because it looked intriguing, and I wanted to support those early indie endeavors on the Vita. I regret that purchase more than I regretted buying HAZE (which I actually enjoyed playing, truth told).

I will agree with you that the SCEA team has been abysmal in the management of this platform. From Jack Tretton to Adam Boyes all the way down to business development representatives, they have ALL done a poor job.

Not having another Madden, Call of Duty, or Assassins Creed is amazing to me. Despite Madden 13 being Madden 12. Despite Call of Duty being more of a proof of concept. Despite Ass Creed running at 20 fps in spots. All three of them sold. How can you not sell that externally to EA, Ubi, and Activision?

all valid points - i don't see what others do and all the praise that game receives. played for maybe 60-180 min. grew pretty tiresome.

i guess if youre really craving a mediocre adventure/puzzle game if okay. personally not worth my valuable/limited game time.

I like Wayforward. They've done some quality stuff. The Shantae game(s) is/are well-liked among those who have actually played them (paging Uraizen), I liked SH:BoM, and I also liked Bloodrayne: Betrayal, Contra 4, and plan on buying Ducktales: Remastered eventually.

Haven't played Contra or Shantae, but I'll take your word for it. Bloodrayne, Ducktales, Double Dragon and Adventure Time I didn't enjoy. I think they were terrible, actually. A Boy and His Blob is the only one I didn't hate, and it's really more of an ambivalence.

Although I'd love Mighty Mighty Switchforce and Shantae on the Vita ...

Haven't played Switchforce either. In fact, it was recently on sale and I avoided it because of wayforward. Same with Silent Hill. Oh well, I may give them a chance next time around.

Kyntt Underground is debatable

No. No, it's not.

Here's the Dragon Fantasy Book II splash screen that appears when you boot it up on the Vita.

How is it? I liked the idea of 1 but the random encounters + constantly not knowing where to go kinda killed it for me, got done with the first third of it.
