GTA V has gone gold.

I'd never seen this before. Amazing.

I've never really understood the fascination and importance of a review. Personally I don't pay attention to any reviews, not video games, not movies, not resturants. I just don't get it. If you can't make up your mind about something you want through word of mouth, research, or desire, probably shouldn't be buying it in the first place.

Aside from industry incentives for meta scores can anyone explain why a review score is important?

In all honesty I think for too many gamers it helps them have 'bragging' rights.

If a game gets good reviews, then when the online arguments come up they can say well this game is better than this game you like, because it has lots of 10/10s.

Hence why too many people have meltdowns in review threads, if any reviewer dares give a game a 8/10. We've all seen it on here wayyy too many times. Of course if you're not looking forward to the game then any 10/10 it gets is from a 'corrupt' reviewer etc.

I don't see how you can really tell..all you see is the guy wearing something black...I mean it could be...but the video doesn't really give any proof

Black jacket, blue jeans. Also, if you pause at the right moment, you can see a female biker in the frame moving foward slowly, possibly Ashley.

I can't believe it's only a week and a half till this drops.

I can't stop googling GTA V news, despite not much new info coming out, and also I would avoid any real spoilers etc so it's more of a compulsion than a genuine desire to learn as much about the game as possible. I made sure to only skim most of that ign article that detailed 5 of the missions to avoid spoiling anything but still feel this weird obsession with getting little tidbits of new info. I feel like I'm going to develop OCD or something as a result of this constant googling, or maybe I'm constantly googling because I'VE HAD IT ALL ALONG MWUAHAHAHA

I keep having these fucked up nightmarish thoughts that it could turn out to be like the GTA equivalent of Resident Evil 5, i.e. a huge letdown, but I know that's just paranoia. I legitimately think there'd be at least one suicide if that were to somehow happen.

Been playing GTA IV the last couple of days and am actually able to get into it somewhat for the first time in years. I played the fuck out of it for months when it came out (it was the first current gen game I bought/played) but then it just became impossible to have fun playing it for more than a few minutes. No other game has ever went from completely engrossing to borderline unplayable almost overnight, after months of enjoying it. Somewhat surprisingly, I'm actually enjoying it more than I expected to now, probably just because I know there's a new GTA on the way.

Preordered GTA V on PSN a couple of weeks ago but as I'm in Western Australia it won't be downloadable till 3pm on Sept 17th (I bought it on the US PSN), and 18gb will take about 24 hours to download with my connection, and my younger brother will also wanna download it to his console, so I ended up preordering a retail copy from ebgames that will be available to be picked up at 8am on Sept 17th. I'll probably sell the disc version on ebay for like two thirds what I paid for it ($108...) a few days later.

Last time I was this hyped for a game was Resident Evil 4 back in early 2005...

I ordered the Sony Pulse 'Elite' headset last week after reading up on it, it will probably arrive on Monday. I mostly got it for GTA V but it'll be awesome for pretty much every game, especially TLOU, Bioshock Infinite etc.

I have never had a real audio setup for my TV, and just playing games with my Brainwavz or Sennheiser canalphones is pretty mindblowing to me compared to the TV speakers, so really looking forward to having a wireless set that will probably sound even better and be way more comfortable to use. Will be great for horror games like Silent Hill, Condemned, the original Bioshock etc too. I think having the headset will tide me over a bit till the game's release hopefully as I'll be able to get used to using it with other games and get all excited in my pants about how awesome it will be with GTA V.

Dan Houser talks to the Guardian, and his office is a mess...

* Grand Theft Auto V arrives after four years of development, a 1,000-page script

*A process that saw 80 per cent of the ever-growing company – eight international studios and counting – involved in recreating a fully functioning metropolis based closely on Los Angeles.

* We spoke to FBI agents that have been undercover, experts in the Mafia, street gangsters who know the slang – we even went to see a proper prison.

* conferences like E3 and Gamescom, which he no longer attends ("You don't play a videogame in a room with 20,000 people doing the same thing unless you're a lunatic").

* We've got this big open-world experience that's 100 hours long, and that gives players control over what they do, what they see, and how they see it

The fuck? That's the wallpaper I made for GAF!

I know because some of those panels i basically created from scratch, and i still have the PDF, lol.

GTA race has been my gaming group's most played multiplayer game this gen. Even though we've played each course dozens and dozens of times, crazy and funny things still happen all the time. The thought of all that with this new engine, all new terrain AND a race editor is mind blowing.

I can't wait for all the little incidental details too. The way that pipes fall from the tops of vans as you slew around a corner. The change in tone of the siren as the car gets damaged. The ice cream van tune that speeds up and slows down with the vehicle. All irrelevant but fun stuff.

Holy shit, a prison breakout mission didn't even occur to me. That's the stuff that character switching is made for.

Congrats, you worked on GTA V.

100 hours long seems, uh, a bit on the grossly exaggerated side. Of course he probably means 100 hours for 100% completion or something like that.

If it takes 100 hours to get 100% completion, then how exactly is stating the game is 100 hours long a gross exaggeration?

My first reaction was that he meant 100 hours to complete the story. Also, I'm drunk.

Drinking speeds time right the hell up. It is known.

Congrats, you worked on GTA V.
Nah, video is Machinima's, technically. ;)
You don't seem too annoyed. Congrats dude! I think.

I have a new wallpaper :P
I'm not annoyed at all, it's just funny to see that thing go around.
In the end it's just a collage of other people's work i made for my GAF comrades, because the wallpaper they (R*) released was kind of lame.

I was just pointing it out because it surprised me! :P

anyway the article is very nice, but i would love to have the interview in full, with the full quotes.

Today is the "big" day in the IGN's GTA V week, right?

Maybe, they will show a remix of all official trailers....
No. The schedule never said that something is happening today. The ??? was from now until launch, meaning that something will happen sometime from now until then.

Why is it everytime some thread about GTAV pops up all we get is people bashing and critising it?
Not worth trying to understand, anything R* related is like catnip for all the joyless cynics on here. Just have to accept the fact that discussion about their games is mostly awful. No clue why, just the way of things.

I'm guessing you're talking about the "Feels Next-Gen" thread that was posted recently. I didn't even bother clicking on it, but I'd be willing to bet there's going to be a handful of posters bitching about them hyping their game or using hyperbole. Since, you know, it's pretty rare for a developer to hype its own game.

The guardian preview was a nicely written piece about the game. Ign and others should take notes. Giving credit where it's due in innovation but not slobbering over it

It's really annoying. They always rant on how it's all hyperbole, how it's not a next-gen game, which is obvious since it's on current gen consoles. They miss the "feels like" point of the claim. They rant on how IGN is "grossly over-exaggerating" because they're being "paid" to write a preview. It's pretty irritating when most of them decide to buy the game anyway then come back like "omg it's so good".

Is this how it's always been on GAF?

I fucking hate the word "hyperbole". Seriously, it's like GAF actually created the word. try using that shit out in the wild, you'll get your face laughed off.

I actually think about 3 or 4 days ago that word was used on here about 30 times.

Dan Houser's condensed response to Guardian asking him why there wasn't a female protagonist (a common complaint):

Dan Houser said:
"The concept of being masculine was so key to this story"

Very interesting.

I also think that they can do more with a male character and not get criticism from the hyper-sensitive, easy to offend enthusiast gaming community.

Something I haven't given GTA V much credit for so far is how they have bucked the recent trend of cliche'd videogame characters... While every other game is either bald muscly soldier (Gears), scruffy sarcastic adventure stud (Uncharted, Last of Us), or always-the-right-line hip minority (Saints Row, or every other minority character), these three guys don't fit any videogame character stereotype.

Michael is a retiree, a parent, tired of his family.
Trevor is a white-trash lunatic
Franklin is arguably the most status quo, done-before character, but so far what we've seen of him doesn't match the cliche'd black guy from other videogames. Shockingly, he's actually from the ghetto... Something that a lot of films, TV, and especially videogames, don't do anymore because they don't want to seem traditional, but in doing that, they've defined a new "traditional."

Also, Houser has a fairly brilliant summary of the dichotomy between GTAIV's Liberty City and GTAV's Los Santos, and how they reflect their real-life counterparts:

Dan Houser said:
"LA is this embodiment of 20th-century American desires: the houses, the gardens, the tans, all slightly fake. It's the end of the western world – the suns sets and then it's tomorrow. But the industry is movies or, equally phoney, real estate. It's people trying to escape their pasts and reinvent themselves. If GTA IV was a classic New York story, this is the endpoint of the American dream."

Pretty much. In the three years I've been on here at least.

Make no mistake, there's a decent number of R* fans on here as well, it's a big forum, but many R*/GTA topics devolve into a shitshow.

I've had every GTA V thread favorited for the last year... I obsessively read pretty much every post.

For every 1 comment that is critical or cynical, you have 50 that are praising it, excited, and hyped. This idea that every GTA thread is trashing GTAV is perception bias. The first page of every GTA thread that gets created is hype gifs and "awe" gifs or Antonio Bandaras "yesss" gifs, with 1 or 2 comments a page that get critical or cynical.

GTAIV though? It's leans more towards criticism. Why? Because the game deserves to be criticized.

I'm a huge Rockstar fan, they're my favorite developer. I've loved playing almost all of their games (the only game in the last 10 years I really think is bad by them is LA Noire). I'll still criticize GTAIV though, game missed the mark where it counted for me. I don't think that GTAV is going to miss the mark.

One of the problems is caring about the opinions of others. Whilst this is important in real life, with friends and family, it really doesn't matter on an Internet message board. Everyone has different tastes, which is great. If you find yourself getting angry when reading negative responses to something you like, simply skip it.

Personally though, if I could take a pill that would knock me out for ten days, I would. Can't wait.

Besides, if you're going to generalise an entire forum as if it's one entity with one voice then the only thing that comes to mind for GTAForums is "illiterate, selfish 13 year olds". Not to mention the place has tons of threads full of shit like "GTAV sucks why cant i get fat or fit. rockstar sux". It's just as critical a place as it is hype inducing.
