Yeah they don't even feel like they tried to do anything wrong. They just feel like they didn't message it well enough. How soon everyone forgets how many threads we had where one of their execs said exactly that.

Sony had plenty of good PR from E3 05 onward. That price alone turned away consumers. You'd be surprised how much of those quotes came just out of that E3.
Frankly they had the games, they had the bad price and the arrogance that turned everybody off. And it just snowballed after that. I recall Kutaragi got fired almost immediately after the PS3 launch and they had already been wheeling out the more likeable faces like Phil Harrison.
In the end they had a less competitive product but it all came down to price

Pretty much this.
If MS really cared about the gaming community they would have never implemented their anti consumer policies and shitty DRM to begin with. They came to their senses only because of a massive (and much needed) backlash. It wasn't until that point that they realized that maybe their ideas were awful and would have detrimental effects towards their brand. I still don't fucking trust these assholes. Plus it's still 100 bucks more and still comes with Kinect, which I don't want.

Sony were unbelievably stupid during the entire year leading up to PS3's launch, and the year after as well.
Having said that, for me, it does not compare to what MS was trying to pull here.
Sony took a major gamble on what they perceived to be intense brand loyalty, using the PS3 as the Blu ray trojan horse at the risk of spiking the price up, and neglecting (for whatever reason) to negotiate proper exclusive software support.
They were stupid and naive and they dropped the ball.
MS knew exactly what they were doing, and their plans were far more menacing than "let's try to get a blu ray player into every PlayStation household at the expense of a reasonable entry price".

Yeah I thought interest was at an acceptable level in the US since there is no pack in yet like other territories. But if they feel compelled to do an apology tour I'd say they aren't there yet.

I remember being at the manager's conference when they were first showing off the 360. In our class all they could talk about was how much money they would make off of all their extra accessories.

I didn't think they were good for the industry back then and a still don't. There's a difference between being a company that establishes a relationship with their consumers and makes money versus one that just takes advantage of their consumers.

For the record, I agree with you. Sony's actual actions that caused them to be in the position they were with PS3 are in no way comparable to what Microsoft was attempting, which was a straight consumer routing. I am merely saying I prefer THIS immediate change and response to Sony's slow and plodding acceptance over a number of years that "ok, maybe we do have to change some things."
Now of course, it has been said by some - rightly - that some Microsoft people have already gone on record that they will re-implement this stuff at some point down the line, when they think "consumers are ready." And that therefore an apology like this cannot be legitimate when they're saying that out of the other side of their mouth.
I can certainly see the rationale in that and wouldn't even really reject it, except to say as long as they see the need to go on an apology tour over everything that happened, I believe the further away such an attempt is. So I think this is a good thing on Microsoft's part.

They didn't create a console that I would buy day one and their previous policies make me wary enough to not buy it day two either. I'll give it two or so years to see how things are going before jumping in. They would have to have some pretty great games for that to happen though.

Instead, Microsoft will probably introduce a bundle with freebies at some point in the next 6 months to break Sony's inevitable starting forward momentum.
There's nothing immediate about this. Microsoft has been shitting on us for years. They abandoned the base to focus on Kinect, and that nonsensical Xbox One reveal was just an extension of their already well established plan.
Now they realize they need us to start building the userbase again, hence the contrition. Great, talk is cheap. Lets see them support a platform for an entire generation just once before pretending they actually give a shit about us.
This is why what tries to do Microsoft is even more arrogant & stupid. They have seen what ps3 has caused to sony, but after all they think to convince theirs fan how better is spend more money for a less powerful machine just for the ... kinect 2 or multimedia/cloud infinite power? I mean, at least ps3 at the time had a good amount of new technologies like the cell or the bluray player with the same price of the xbone. (if someone has forgot it, ps3 had two models, one of the two was 499$)

I think you hit the nail on the head with why I'm still not entirely convinced yet. Their launch line-up is great but I have zero trust towards MS now. They effectively lost me as a loyal consumer following the XB1 announcement fiasco.
They'll have to bleed cash on exclusives and price-cuts to entice me back again.
...Or just bring back PGR.

Just long enough that they can build up a decent userbase to ensure third party support. Then it's back to focusing on the market they really care about.
A great exclusive launch title would do it, but they don't really have one.

I really can't agree with this either. I mean I understand where you're coming from, but I believe you're trying to merge multiple different patterns of behavior which don't deserve to be valued equally or even judged in a similar fashion.
The reason everyone was really made about the XBO was because of the DRM, the physical property rights being taken away and because Kinect was forced on everyone and for a while couldn't be unplugged or turned off.
I can't really see how their shift during the 360 years to Kinect games is therefore an 'extension' of this behavior. Focusing on Kinect on 360 - which isn't even forced on anybody - just means they're focusing on a different type of gamer who happens not to be me. Why would I get MAD about that? Everyone knows I criticized Microsoft for that focus away from hardcore gamers, but I wasn't angry about it - I just felt disappointed because I believe Kinect is a worthless piece of technology and I believe the 360's library suffered in quality in those years due to it. But even THEN, they were still getting all the multiplatform hardcore games and they still were releasing a few things for us, like Gears of War, like Max: Curse of Brotherhood that's coming out a little later for 360, like Forza Horizon.
This behavior on the 360 is not "fucking the consumer." The only argument toward THAT would be the stuff they put behind a paywall 360, and in that case I would agree their behavior on XBO was an extension of that. But the actual shift to Kinect games to 360 and their diminished focused on the hardcore during that time... that's not fucking consumers, and therefore to me that's not equal or even inherently negative. I'm just selfish and prefer games be made for me and me alone; that doesn't mean I assess inherently negative value to someone else getting a little attention for a change. I'll just criticize the shitty lineup afterwards, not get angry
They outright said, on a public forum, and in various interviews, this is the direction they want to take. The "misunderstanding", as they term it, was down to miscommunication, they don't believe they were in the wrong.

Effectively they are laying the ground work down if their casual/NFL crowd pitch doesn't work they can 'fall back' on gamers. It should be the other way around.
