PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

480p, 720p, 1080i according to the spec sheet. Weird that 1080p isn't included for media stuff, at least.

You essentially get 1080i for free once you have 720p support. That covers most of the install base, and probably partly due to heat issues.

how so? at this point, with 3rd party development dying out, its clear WU will live & breath on first party software, which is their standard exclusive stuff. im not seeing how this affects that

This is essentially a cheaper home console alternative coming out at a time Nintendo could have had all to themselves in the fall with PS4 not coming until 2014.

So...just how many TV service apps work on the vita and hence this? I know of Crunchyroll, and I guess netflix does.

Remote play from PS4 would deliver even more apps, if it's in use on a second TV, but would obviously stop the PS4 being used on the TV it's connected to.

PlayStation®4 (PS4TM) remote play
As with PS Vita, PS Vita TV will also support PS4TM remote play and Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK®4) through future system software update*4. This will allow users to enjoy most of the PS4TM games on PS Vita TV as if they are playing it on the PS4TM system.

Amazing, just fucking amazing. Thank you Sony!

DAY 1 !!

this info needs to be in the thread title!

So the Vita tv is essentialy a home console. But we already have the ps3 for that...Why not make the new Vita model with Hdmi output so we can choose how we want to play?

Guess it's still nice if you are a type of person that doesn't play handhelds outside the house. Cheaper price is also fair.

So, let me get this straight.

I own a PS4.

I use the Vita TV to play my PS4 on any TV in my house, regardless of whether the console is connected to them.

I can play any PSP or Vita title on my big screen in 720p, using a DS3 or DS4 as the input device. But I don't need to actually have a Vita or PSP to do so, but I do need to already own the games.

The remote play feature showcased in the video, where the girl played Knack on her Vita at school has nothing to do with Vita TV, that's a core feature of the PS4/Vita architecture.

Am I missing anything?

The ad they played in the end wasnt a PS TV ad. It was for the PS Family as a whole

I don't know if it will render Vita games in 720p, that'd be the only question I'd have. Along with how this affects system activations.

Ugh guess I'll wait for Vita TV2

won't make a difference in terms of gaming...there is gonna be upscaling all over the place regardless

PSP/PSOne/PSV games are all going to be well below 720p anyway...so either the upscaling is done in the little box, your AV Receiver, or your TV...gotta happen somewhere...

i can understand in terms of something like Netflix, but even then streaming services are so compressed anyway, will it matter??

where it will make a difference is PS4 remote play to different TV's...but 1080p is going to be a bandwidth hog for streaming anyway...probably introduces a series risk of latency if streaming 1080p games to a TV in the other room...

So, let me get this straight.

I own a PS4.

I use the Vita TV to play my PS4 on any TV in my house (or possibly anywhere with internet), regardless of whether the console is connected to them.

I can play any PSP or Vita title on my big screen in 720p, using a DS3 or DS4 as the input device. But I don't need to actually have a Vita or PSP to do so, but I do need to already own the games.

it has tv/video/media streaming services, independent of ps4.

also plays ps1+ps2 classics.

So, let me get this straight.

I own a PS4.

I use the Vita TV to play my PS4 on any TV in my house (or possibly anywhere with internet), regardless of whether the console is physically connected to them.

I can play any PSP or Vita title on my big screen in 720p, using a DS3 or DS4 as the input device. But I don't need to actually have a Vita or PSP to do so, but I do need to already own the games.

Nope. Think of the PS4 as a media center that can also serve actual games to the PSVitaTV or the PSVita.

In theory, you could just put the PS4 in a closet with your other network hardware/servers and never look at it again, and just buy PSVTs for all the TVs in your house

This is seriously a confusing product. What incentive do developers have now to develop for the vita? Almost may as well just make your game ps3/4.

No, you make them for Vita/VitaTV

It makes perfect sense, and it will boost the Vita userbase tenfold if its priced like it is in Japan, worldwide. This is the shot in the arm Vita needed. I wasnt going to buy a Vita, but I am now. Im a new potential customer for developers making Vita software.

This is one of the smartest and coolest things Sony has ever done imo. It may have just changed my mind about what next-gen console I want first as well.

The Apple TV is a complement for Apple's ecosystem. Can the Vita TV stream your iPad or iPhone to your TV? No. Can it play iTunes content directly? No. This won't touch it.

I honestly still don't really know what this is.

Do I still need my Vita for it to work? Is it just a Vita in a box without the screen and buttons? How will touchscreen games work on a DS3?

I'm so confused about this whole thing!

Probably already answered, but where the fuck is the adapter that lets me use the Vita console I ALREADY BOUGHT on my TV?

Fuckers.

I think this product is just too confusing to be successful

It's an Sony version of Apple TV except it plays physical vita games too and can play PS1 games. It's $100 and has media apps like Netflix and all that. What's confusing?

just wait till it's out. considering they're pushing streaming abilities and video sharing, I guess you can use your vita to play those touch-specific games and stream it over vita tv to twitch and the likes.

that would be SO sweet!

Not mentioned in the press release so... doubt it.
It's a standalone vita-based device, why would they make it a double vita?

It's pretty much my new PS4 streamer. If it gets Gaikai and will allow me to play PS3 on ANY device, than I am SO in.

Gaikai is what's going to be the killer app for this device. Vita TV + Gakai can be to streaming games what Roku + Netflix are to streaming movies.

Please Sony, somehow get Plex on this little thing.

i don't think this will be that popular in the united states. however, i think it could become the lead console in japan. it's extremely inexpensive, has a library japanese gamers care about (yakuza's even coming to the thing), and has been building a bit of steam over the last year or so. i could see some sort of weird competition between the ps4 and vita in japan.

Sony should beg GungHo to port Puzzle & Dragon to Vita TV.

Fucking amazing. This is all a haze to me right now, but assuming all the ambiguous potential I see is fulfilled, I don't know why this little device wouldn't be a big hit. This is something I would day 1, yet I don't think I've ever even played a game on a Sony handheld.

if you want to play your shiny new PS4 games in downscaled resolutions with some added latency...

Yeah, the people who have already deemed this as an Apple TV killer have lost me. There's kneejerk reactions all over the place in here.

ah, well i guess there's that....PS3 didn't really make a dent but as you said, with the price this one could. at least nintendo will finally have some of their bigger titles out by then, but yeah, if they'dve used their year 1 better (momentum wise) they'dve had a lot less to worry about

Sony is on a murdering spree...

im happy about EDF, Ishin and (Suda something) but let's not get crazy just yet

Its a Roku competitor. Only a 100 dollars its meant to be cheap streaming box for movies + play games. Its nice for playing Vita games, PSP games on TV which you cant do on PS3 so might have to get it for that.
