PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

yup, this is why i think its cool even if i don't end up getting one - i really want a stronger japanese AA scene going, and sony's making efforts to host such a thing, i think. always good to see

sometimes as a kid id get a controller before i could afford the system just to play with it a bit and when exciting stuff goes on the TV i could be like pew pew pewwww

Vita for us JGamers is perfect. Poor western only gamers have no games ;_;

Oh gosh. So pretty much, the Vita's going to get a massive boost in market penetration, meaning more people are going to be buying games, so developers will see more opportunities. So more games.

Some games won't be compatible with the Vita TV, since they require touch. If people who own only the Vita TV want to play certain games, they'll need to get the portable Vita as well. Japan's also very portable centric anyway, so it'll probably bring in even more Vita hardware sales.

Curious how Media Create will track it. Vita, Vita Slim, and Vita TV?

Did Sony create his own new competitor on the console market? It looks like the PS4 is the luxus model and the PSV TV the low level model, like the Wii last gen. I'm not sure if it is a good idea, but with all its indie games on the Vita, it could be fill the spot of the Oyun or a possible Steambox.

Not sure how I would choose between this and buying a Vita itself.

I have every European PS+ Vita game available to me so it's a big library but some will be incompatible and I loose portability.

What this device basically will be is an indie game console with the added PS4 streaming functionality. At the price discussed you can't go wrong.

i want

a ps vita (the handheld) for tearaway, dangan ronpa, and other obviously handheld-only games

a vita tv for trails in the sky and other rpgs i missed out on

i don't want both... so i might settle on the much more expensive handheld for just a couple of games, despite how much more vita tv is up my alley.

Wait, Danganronpa has stuff that'll only work on a handheld? fuck.

So why not include a DualShock 4? What does this mean for backtouch and touchscreen stuff?

It's coming out in Japan before PS4 launches, hence the DS3. I imagine they'll make a DS4 bundle in the future. Devs may be able to make PSVitaTV specific UIs/control schemes, but if not that would limit the games to nothing using the touchscreen/touchpad. And the DS3/4 have sixaxis so I think at least motion games may be okay. Camera games are probably a no as well.

I honestly think that's a thin excuse. They'll have the DS4s mass produced by then. Why not just release it before the PS4? I dunno, it ultimately doesn't matter. I just wish the Vita TV was getting the superior controller from the start.

I think they wanted to keep the cost down, if the bundle was $200 with a DS4 and 16GB of memory then it loses it's appeal.

Wow, this really surprised me. Hopefully this can be useful to others than me. I don't think I would ever buy one.

Actually thinking about it, the lack of memory in this thing is a massive oversight. They finally learned with the Vita that they need memory built in and add a measly 1GB. But this thing they force you to get a memory card as well.

Let's be honest here, the ability to play your PS4 on any TV in the house is a feature most of us would gladly pay $99 for.

Everything else is just icing on the cake.

It's definitely dumb.

So you think Danganronpa won't work on Vita TV? I'd be heartbroken if so :(

The emphasis is on streaming everything.

Will buy for remote play on my upstairs TV if it works well.

I assume it doesn't add any as or anything to games.

Some Vita stuff is going to look jank on TV.

Interesting move Sony.

Wonder why it doesn't use the DS4 though.

Can Apple TV play Uncharted?....

Can it play Tekken 2? Ridge Racer Type 4? Fifa 14?

Can it play any games where I dont have to look down at a virtual joystick, completely defeating the purpose?
So we agree that both do completely different stuff (with a couple of complimentary overlapping features that every device on earth offers) and barely touch each other. My point exactly.

Remote play from PS4 would deliver even more apps, if it's in use on a second TV, but would obviously stop the PS4 being used on the TV it's connected to.

Yeah. I was more curious for its position versus AppleTV, roku, etc rather than a second screen addon for the PS4.

yes but the markets are different. The Vita still has life in Japan, and it's games are more geared towards what Japanese audiences want. "Play Vita games on your TV" isn't exactly a huge seller in North America. Maybe they change the name and just call it Playstation TV? Afterall it's all about getting people into the ecosystem of PSN.

for japan it will be cheap vita system with a bonus of some media capability

for US, it will be another media streaming box, with bonus of playing playstation games.

They'll iron out the kinks for the international release.

Letting it sink in, we have to imagine this is an afterthought for Sony. As such, one had to imagine they won't market this much at all.

I doubt it will have much of a market penetration tbh. We shall see.

Yup. I really don't care about the PS Vita functionality but its some damn good icing.

As a media box it's awful since every other device can put out a 1080p picture.

yes absolutely, but on the gaming side its quite brilliant...this is almost aimed right at me...someone who has some interest in some of the Vita/PSP software, but no interest in buying a portable console...

Why do people keep saying it can play PS2 games? It didn't say that and it's literally a Vita. Which can't play PS2 games.
Because people don't read.

Huh? They could just throw in a DS4 and bump up the price by $10. I'd be more than happy with that. But it doesn't matter, cause it looks like there's a Vita TV that doesn't come bundled with a controller at all. I'll just buy that one and use a DS4.

Just had a quick look at my Vita library and there really aren't too many games one can play without the touchscreen...

Even Soul sacrifice requires a touchscreen to activate a Black Rite, I guess we're stuck with P4G and Spelunky with this model then?

The emphasis is on streaming everything.

Yeah but you can't stream or save games without it. If it was just netflix and hulu then yea but it needs something even 1GB would be ok for most families so they can download the small games and actually play them.

Everyone just needs to keep in mind that if a Vita game uses the touchscreen or back touchpad, it won't work on this according to the press release.

I can't think of a Vita game that doesn't use the touchscreen or back touchpad. Sony have to think of a solution, regardless of how crude, to support simple touchscreen gestures on the DS3. For instance, the L2, R2, L3 and R3 buttons have no use on the Vita, and could be used to simulate general touch gestures. Then, hopefully, Sony exclusives and other games can be patched to make touch controls optional.

Sony is on a murdering spree...

psvita tv + ps4 = $500 = same price as xbone

but...psvita tv + ps4 will let you play ps1, ps2, ps3 (gaikai next year), ps4, psp, and psvita games

plus two separate media streaming devices for separate tvs, and no need to carry and squabble with cords to play ps4 games, just stream it to the other tv.

EmptySpace's virtua particles just became real. holy guacamole.
