PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Does that mean games wont have that crap feature of holding your vita up to a light (Uncharted and AC Lib i'm looking at you) to see stuff that simply doesn't work.

Uncharted makes use of the vita-specific stuff quite a bit, I doubt we'll see that on this thing unfortunately.

thinking about this thing's prospects in the us.

1. the price is great
$100 for a video game console from a major player hasn't happened in 4 years since the ps2 hit that price, and that's when it was 9 years old. the older ds systems dropped that low after a long time on the market as well. this is the first time we have a supported system from a major first-party hitting this price since the gamecube in 2003. in an age where people are spending hundreds of dollars on phones and tablets, that makes it extremely attractive

2. the branding is slightly confusing (similar to the 2ds)
so there's a little bit of weirdness with this in that i can see people looking for ps vita tv games, kinda like people looking for nintendo 2ds games. unfortunately, this is more of an actual problem since the vita tv and the handheld vita don't 100% share the same library.

3. the library is unattractive (but not to me)
where the ps4 is home to a lot of western games aimed at western gamers, the vita is home to a lot of japanese-centric releases. i'm talking about stuff like dangan ronpa, persona 4, the idol dancer games or whatever, trails in the sky, soul sacrifice, etc. in the us, the top selling games on the machine are uncharted, mortal kombat, call of duty, and assassin's creed. the upcoming library doesn't have much in the way for this audience either, and who knows how much of those recently-announced games will come to the west? yakuza and phantasy star nova are probably solid "no" answers.

4. it's not coming out until 2014, maybe
the announcement was just for japanese audiences, apparently. i suspect it'll come out here eventually, but that they're also missing an opportunity to release it during the holiday season where it had a possibility of defying the odds and building a decent fanbase (not to mention being a companion to the ps4 for the same price of an xbox one). they'll probably release it in march or february. it won't be too late, but it could be wasted potential.

5. the revision of the handheld ps vita is a thing
i totally understand sony wanting to cut costs on the vita. i expected this was on the way given their history. however, i wonder if they shouldn't have just had a smaller release or a very soft launch instead, similar to the gba sp+, and not focus so much on it while also showcasing the vita tv, which winds up less of a companion and more of a competitor. it feels like a mistake to push this into the west in 2013 and not have the vita tv. to me, the vita tv should have happened this holiday season (like october), and the vita revision could have happened in february.

6. it's a console
this is probably the biggest thing that negates whatever negatives there are. dedicated handhelds aren't selling much in the west, so turning the vita into a console is probably the best shot it has at gaining any sort of relevance. i don't believe too many people are going to be disappointed that tearaway won't be playable on the machine, because i doubt too many people are interested in tearaway. whatever games are playable will have a broader reach than before.

so overall i think it has a decent shot at doing something in the united states. even 50,000 a month would be pretty good for the vita, even if we had to combine platforms to get there, and we're talking about what is probably its weakest region. i imagine the machine will do very well in japan.

Huh? The DS4 has a touch pad.

Guess it could cause a problem for rear touch, though.

But the DS3 is compatible and they have a bundle with one. If I were a Vita dev, I'd make sure my game could be played by the most people possible, by making sure the game can be played without any touch at all.

While that's an option, it's not for everyone. Not everyone values sound as much and sometimes even if you have a receiver and a whole home cinema setup in your living room for example, you can still have (or someone in your house) a shit-load of HDMI devices in their bedroom.

IDK, it baffles me to see TV sets being sold in 2013 with 3 HDMI inputs.

I paid 250 bucks three years ago for a Sony receiver that takes in three HDMI inputs and outputs it through one HDMI output to the TV.

Shit is affordable and there's no reason to have a billion HDMI ports on TVs either. 3 is more than enough for 99.9% of the population.

Holy shit? It plays Nintendo games?

In fairness I think Nintendo forgot about the WiiU and the fact it can play Nintendo games.

Dude, this is for spare bedrooms, nothing more.
No spare bedroom, or another TV in your man-cave/kitchen/shed? No point.

For those that do though, this is amazing. Multiroom PS4, + netflix, Vita games, PSP and PS1, facebook, twitter, flickr, etc, etc. I don't even need one and i'm tempted, just because i have a spare TV upstairs that usually does fuck all.

disagree...

I have no intention of every buying a Vita...however there are games i would like to play (KZ Mercenary for example)...if im ever going to get a chance to play them, this device is what i need...

this will be part of my main gaming setup, and probably NEVER used to stream content to another TV in my house because of the lower resolutions/unavoidable added latency

It does. All one gigabyte's worth.

And no touch screen support. As a result certain Vita games won't be playable unless they fix it in a patch.

Alright, 1GB is very low, but if I decide to go with carts it should be enough. Now I'll ponder if $100 is a good price or wait for bomba bin.

Wait. If the PS4 can stream Vita games and I already have a Vita, do I really need this?

At $99, it's kind of hard NOT to buy it.

Given all the indies on PSN this seems like a great little indie console. Does it have 4 controller support? If so the Towerfall dev should port it ASAP.

1080i? No p?

EDIT: Beaten by a few posts...

Whats the difference really when your up-scaling sub-hd games anywho I suppose :P

I have a new question if it's not yet been asked

Is there still any point to ps4 games streamed to the vita still? when if your main tv is in use you can use this to stream your ps4 to another fullscreen tv?

I suppose for people who don't have a second tv or just want to play ps4 games in bed or in a room without tv.

The official release says only 2 controller support. Who know if that's a hard limit or if a solution to move to 4 could be patched in later.

You can play on the go. It can stream over the Internet.

I never realized how uninformed people were about how remote play works. You don't have to be on the same network to use it, not after it's been setup at least.

I also find it pretty weird that some of you are questioning why it doesn't come with a DS4, and if a DS4 will work with it. It should be pretty obvious. The release date for Vita TV is this year, in Japan, and the PS4 doesn't release in Japan until February 2014. How exactly would they bundle a DS4 with it? And of course a DS4 will work, how else would PS4 remote play work? Use common sense, some of you.

I don't know if it has been asked or answered but is that the PS4's AUX in for like the PS4 Camera?

Or if they want to play in the same room as others/family who are watching something else. As in they want to stay in that room but still play.

I'm reminded of the rumor that Sony was putting together a streaming cable TV service--that would be absolutely perfect for this device.

Heh, $250 for 2 additional inputs doesn't sound that affordable. 10+ switch with IR control at $100 sounds affordable.

But that's enough of off-topic I guess.

Thanks, 1080i should be okay for Vita games, but for PS4 remote it's stupid to not have 1080p.

my prediction is that the PS4 remote play to vita works by having PS4 set to 720p and then send image to Vita. Lower resolution = less data to send = less latency. Plus vita's max resolution is 544p so it wouldnt need the 1080p

The PS4 will probably recognize the Vita TV as a normal Vita so it will set itself to 720p.

I don't have a Vita but do own a shitload of digital PSP and Playstation games. With this box I could download those games again for nothing and play them on this? For the cheap price I'm definitely going to consider it. The fact it plays Vita games as well is added bonus. This is a great idea, really impressed.

So apparently Y2Kev predicted this one week ago. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=79556093&postcount=2

If that was just a wild guess and not inside information consider my mind blown.

He got this from an insider/GAF member who wants to verify himself/famousmortimer - he always does this when a conference is around and knows some things :lol

He did the same thing with the Nintendo conference back then and talked about Red Steel, but that didn't happen (to my surprise as well)

This will be worth it for the remote play stuff alone, given it works well. I bounce between playing games on my monitor in the bedroom and TV in the living room, and moving a console back and forth just isn't an option. This could be perfect.

I'm beyond hyped. I was going to hold off on getting a new console for at least a few months, but now I might be in there on day one.

*blinks* A receiver actually outputs to speakers that are 10x better than my TV's. I'm just saying, it's not expensive and your switch example is baffling!

From left to right. Memory card. USB. HDMI out. Ethernet. Power.

And the game card is on the side, I wonder why it's separated from the rest.

im not attacking you (so please dont take it that way) but anyone that doesn't "value sound as much" has never played their games/watched movies in a properly setup home theater...im not even talking overly expensive...just a decent set of speakers and a decent AV Receiver...

for example...have a great friend that i game with online all the time that moved away not that long ago...we play a lot of CoD together online...he was up visiting the other day and stopped over to play a little bit of CoD online together...about 15 minutes into our session he looked at me and said "dude, im hearing things ive never heard in this game before, its crazy!"

now i will agree that sometimes a full blown AV receiver and speaker system is quite overkill for a small bedroom gaming setup...but you can have great sound in small areas...its all about finding the right components...

as for limited numbers of HDMI inputs on TV's...i agree with you...but everything costs money so OEM's have to try to balance what they feel the average person has in their homes...
