PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Does anyone else think this new improved Sony is partially a result of having a CEO that understands gaming and its potential as an entertainment platform going forward?

Suddenly all those Kaz gifs don't seem so silly anymore..

Yeah I wonder how much of what we've been getting this past year is the result of Kaz' promotion.

Again, the games that make use of the gyro and touch screen can all be mapped to the DS4, but that won't come until PS4 launches in Japan.
I wouldn't worry about those games in particular, as they're first party, they'll definitely be supported in future. The list we're seeing now is just what's confirmed so far.

Gravity rush would actually work perfectly fine with a DS4 since it has minimal touch screen usage (dodging and sliding only I think?) and the could easily be done on the DS4 since you don't need to look at what you're doing

I imagine remote play would still be a 980x540 stream, since the Vita TV is still a Vita.

So scaling to 1080i wouldn't really suffer compared to 1080p.

Yeah, I was hoping for native 1080p streaming (from PS4) and output. The hardware (GPU/CPU) in the Vita could definitely handle it.

Sixaxis not accurate enough? Funny how they totally threw that out after the beginning of the generation.

Have you played Gravity Rush? That's nearly impossible to patch the touch controls out of.

DS4, all you need. It'll happen.

Sixaxis doesn't have the touchpad on the front, or the speakers. It'd be pointless to have sixaxis/DS3 when DS4 support will come anyways with PS4 remote play.

For these PS Vita TV compatible games (list here: http://www.jp.playstation.com/psvitatv/game/psvitalist/), I wonder what their solution is:

Lumines Electronic Symphony - menus, back touch required for building up meter, touch screen to activate powers
Soul Sacrifice - menus, black rites and a certain secret trophy
Ninja Gaiden - back touch ninpo activation
Ragnarok Odyssey - touch for items / powers

These are all in the list though.

First off: Fucking hyped! Didn't see this coming at all & its going to be sold at a reasonable price. Day 1.

Secondly: I think the DS3 complaints are a little much. You'll be playing PSP/Vita games at first which wouldn't really need a DS4. If you plan on streaming PS4 you'll already have a DS4. Am I missing something?

Only way it hurts is if they get devs to use the trackpad for Vita games, then it would make sense.

Kind of sort of makes up for no TLG

Vitas best games imo ( gravity daze, Tearaway soon) won't be playable. It's a big issue.

A bit worried Sony is shooting wildly

We have for active platforms

1. PS3
2. PS4
3. PSP
4. PSV (which will have unique touchscreen games)
5. PSVT
6. PS Move
7. PS Eye
8. PS VR (?) (unsure if this will end up happening)
9. PS Mobile
10. PS Gaikai (which can stream its own unique games)

Its almost like they want to take a shot at doing everything from Ouya to mobile games to console to handheld...

Some overlap, others dont, and im not sure how Sony intends to get network effects for each.

They've got a solution - a controller layout, DS4 compatibility, something - I'm just not sure yet what it is because a lot of the games in the "compatible" list do use the front and back touch a lot.

bullshit, extra buttons on the controller can be mapped for slide/dodge/etc the rest is gyro which the ds3 has. Frankly it would be a much better controlling game if they do it.

psp is mostly wrapped up into ps vita at this point, or dead. not a ton of umd games coming out.

the vita is the most sega-esque thing of theirs though, like a reverse nomad.

I mean just in terms of stuff with motion requirements. I don't really see how the touchpad is going to work anyway since it isn't going to be very accurate, you can't really see what you're touching very well.

Im not likely gonna play Vita games on the big screen, but if it means Ill be able to play pro evo in bed streamed from the living room then I will def be getting one.

Now all I need is Pro Evo on the PS4

It would play worse I think. I used the gyro to aim 99% of the time and I feel like it will be awkward on a controller.

I was gonna say this was a great idea, but it just made me want a $99 PS3. I need a cheap box that plays all the Metal Gear games dammit. Preferrably physical copies too.

I am glad a real game company woke up and did this before an android box or apple ate their lunch.

This makes so much sense. And if you are buying a streaming box. Why wouldn't you get this?

I love it wish the DVD less 360 mini existed and Nintendo let me use 3ds like this maybe this will light a fire under them. Just makes so much sense. Good move Sony. Fuck off Android boxs.

This is just awesome. Getting one for sure.

Even if you don't have Vita and have PS+, they already gave us bunch of cool games for the console, and now we can play them with this new thing. I mean, BOMBA. Plus there's a months to come, so even more free Vita games for your room.

I think they're trying to build their own eco system. Their whole business is in trouble so instead of trying to solve problems in each department one by one, lets all of them come together and push everything forward.

As far as we know DS4 is a bluetooth device like DS3 so VitaTV 's DS4 support is a matter of software updates (if it isn't supported from day 0).

Yep, which is the problem Sony had with their previous CEO aswell. Doing -everything- and then failing at everything. FOCUS Sony!

You can do pretty well with this though, you'd be missing MGS4 and the pre solid games.

Yup, Gravity Rush could definitely be mapped to a DS4. Slide and dodge on the touchpad, gyro controls for aiming in the air. To be honest, even the gyro controls could be dropped entirely in favour of more flexible aiming on the right stick.

With a little extra work, I think it'd be totally fine even on a DS3. Move the slide controls to L3/R3, dodge to L2/R2 and you're golden.

720p is a bummer, but I'll probably get one anyway.

More than anything this shows how far behind Nintendo is and how outdated their view on gaming is. Really frustrating as a Nintendo fan and 3DS owner.

I dunno. I played the game aiming by using gyro and analog in conjunction. I've done the same in some PS3 games (Killzone 3) and it felt natural. Should be fine with the DS4 since it supposedly has better sixaxis/gyro functionality

From the SCEJA conference, PS VIta TV is a device that lets you play Vita games on TV
Japanese launch is nov 14 2013
9,480 Yen ~$100 for the console
14,980 Yen ~$150 for the console + 8GB memory card and a white DS3
Accepts physical Vita cards
Plays PS1 and PSP games
PS4 remote play, can play Vita games through PS4, so yes also DualShock 4 support
You can remote play PS4 games through PS Vita TV on a tv in another room (!!)

you can play vita games on your ps4?
how do you use this vita tv device with a ds4 controller?
does it come in black?

So basically sony have just guarenteed that no future dev will make a game that uses the touchscreen as an integral part of the game.

Are there any good games that already do? If not I think I'd prefer this to the vita

I'm still worried about how many Vita games this will support. Many games have some sort of rear or touch requirement to execute a certain task. Might be a dealbreaker for some if they can't play games like Killzone, LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway which aren't on this compatibility list.
I also hope the USB port in the back can be used to attach an external hard drive. Buying an overpriced memory card that runs out of space easy makes the overall price not as impressive. I'll still get one either way of course.

Have they announced how people will know what games will be supported by the Vita TV?
Say, for example, I bought one from a shop, then went to buy a game that isn't compatible from a supermarket, would there be anything there warning me that the game, especially if it's been released before the Vita TV launch, that the game won't work on the system?

Eh, going forward it's realistically more like:

Tier One
PS4 (with some games enhanced for VR)
PSV / PSVT

Tier Two
PS Move
PS Eye

Tier 3
PS3
PS Mobile

This is the last calendar year of Sony's direct development for PS3. They even said all of their studios are on the PS4 bandwagon now. It gets its own slot this year, but not next year.

PSP is dead outside of Japan. No major Sony development focus on it at all.

There will be no exclusive Vita TV software. Makes no sense at all.

PS Eye only games and apps... I guess I can see it since it is more accurate than last gen's version and the DS4s have a lightbar - little more than dance games and the like though IMHO.

PS Mobile requires the slimmest of resources, but let's leave it separate.

There will be no original Gaikai streamed games developed. It will be old games ported to the service, or a different format option for current games.

So The PS4 and Vita are the only platforms with heavy focus from Sony, then comes the Move/PSEye tier. The PS3 is on its last hurrah as it relates to serious development dollars from Sony, and the Mobile division is no resource monster at all.

Aww yeah.

It feels so good when the light comes on.

It Only Does...Too Much?

It's a good point though, Sony have lots of things to juggle.

I'd be more worried about which ones will support touchscreen/back touchscreen in the future, since a game with no touchscreen features would work on both, while a game with touchscreen would require a extra work.

You can do pretty well with this though, you'd be missing MGS4 and the pre solid games.

MGS HD Collection includes Metal Gear 1 and 2, so you'd have everything besides MGS4. Maybe you'll be able to play it over Gaikai, but who knows if or when that may happen, so it'd be best to just get a $199 or second-hand PS3.

This will revive vita.

Really , can't believe a good news about vita for once.

still not enough games but new ss and that srpg is a start.

competition is good :D

wonder how Nintendo will react, a 3ds player for wiiu will be cool.

Will someone tweet and ask Sony why the hell they're not allowing people to use their Vita as a controller so that we can play ALL Vita games on our TVs? What a missed opportunity.
